Tesla is expected to unveil a new service at its Robotaxi event that will impact Uber and Lyft. The ride-hailing industry has so far been dominated by two major players — Uber and Lyft — and Gawrelski said Tesla's Robotaxi could mark a new challenger jockeying for market share. Uber, Lyft, and Tesla did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Ives said Tesla's Robotaxi event will be a historical day for the auto industry — and it will pressure Uber to seek out more partnerships. In September, Waymo announced that its Waymo One ride-hailing service would be available to users in Austin and Atlanta exclusively through the Uber app.

Lan Sak, Thailand AP —Mourners wept and monks prayed at a cremation ceremony Tuesday in a small town in central Thailand for 23 young students and teachers who died in last week’s bus fire on a school field trip. A large cremation site was set up close to the temple in Lan Sak town whose compound hosts the school that was attended by the victims. Six teachers and 39 elementary and junior high school students were on the bus when it caught fire on October 1 on a highway in Pathum Thani, a northern suburb of Bangkok. Transport officials were being scrutinized after information emerged that the bus had passed an inspection about four months before the fire. Police believe that a gas tube from one of the canisters had come loose, with sparks then setting the leaking gas on fire.

Lasers could take broadband where fiber optics can’t
  + stars: | 2024-10-09 | by ( Jacopo Prisco | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
One solution could come from a technology called “free-space optics” (FSO), which uses lasers to transfer data through the air. Fog and rain, but even simple air turbulence, are enough to disrupt the signal, which also requires a stable, direct line of sight between transmitter and receiver. So, despite the advantage of not requiring any licensing or regulation, unlike radio signals such as 5G, FSO broadband has yet to materialize as a commercial reality. Now, Virginia-based company Attochron says it’s ready to launch its own version of it — after more than 20 years of development. Enabling, not replacingAccording to Chaffee, the advantages of bridging the last mile with lasers are many, starting with the fact that it’s comparatively cheaper than laying fiber optics cables.

Workers picket outside a Boeing Co. facility during a strike in Everett, Washington, US, on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. Boeing Co. factory workers walked off the job for the first time in 16 years, halting manufacturing across the planemaker's Seattle hub after members of its largest union voted overwhelmingly to reject a contract offer and go on strike. Boeing withdrew a contract offer for 33,000 machinists who have been on strike since mid-September, and said further negotiations "do not make sense at this point." Boeing later sweetened the offer, increasing pay raises, a ratification bonus and other improvements, which the union turned down, arguing that it was not negotiated. The union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said Tuesday that Boeing refused to improve wages, retirement plans and vacation or sick leave.

Foreign adversaries will try to shake Americans’ confidence in the legitimacy of election results in November by giving voice to false claims or spreading their own disinformation about ballot counting, U.S. intelligence officials said Tuesday. In its latest assessment of foreign threats to the election, intelligence officials said the main foreign powers seeking to shape the outcome of the vote — Russia, China and Iran — also were focusing on meddling in congressional and state races. China’s election influence efforts were focused on “tens” of races, with Beijing denigrating particular candidates with a variety of social media and other online activities, the intelligence official added. Officials also said foreign adversaries are getting more skilled at using Americans to spread their manufactured falsehoods. Intelligence officials reiterated that Russia’s disinformation campaign is directed at undermining Vice President Kamala Harris and her fellow Democrats as Moscow seeks to undercut Western support for Ukraine.

Certain toilet paper, tissue and office paper brands are made with materials from eucalyptus trees, a non-native species to Portugal. CNN PortugalThe problem is eucalyptus trees are particularly flammable. The eucalyptus tree is native to Australia and provides food and shelter to koalas, among other wildlife. As the Portuguese paper and timber industries grew in the mid-1900s, so too did eucalyptus plantations, and the species now covers nearly 2 million acres.
