New York CNN —Hedge fund billionaire Leon Cooperman is blasting college students for protesting against Israel, joining a growing list of powerful university donors to speak out on the issue. “These kids in college have sh*t for brains,” Cooperman told CNN in a phone interview. Earlier this month, a Columbia University student who was hanging up posters in support of Israel was assaulted. Samantha Slater, a Columbia University spokesperson, declined to comment on whether the university plans to take disciplinary action against Massad. “Columbia is grateful to Mr. Cooperman for his years of generosity and service to Columbia Business School,” Slater said in a statement to CNN.

A Senate committee found that Clarence Thomas had a substantial loan forgiven by a wealthy friend in 2008. Thomas' friend, healthcare exec Anthony Welters, loaned him over $260,000 that Thomas used to purchase a luxury RV. The findings came four months after Thomas joined a majority Supreme Court opinion striking down Biden's student debt forgiveness plan. The Senate Finance Committee said Thomas didn't report the loan on his ethics forms. "Justice Thomas should inform the committee exactly how much debt was forgiven and whether he properly reported the loan forgiveness on his tax returns and paid all taxes owed.

New York CNN —A mobile billboard truck drove outside the entrance of Columbia University on Wednesday displaying the names and faces of students that a conservative nonprofit responsible for the truck says were linked to a statement blaming Israel for the Hamas terror attack. Photos viewed by CNN showed Columbia students following the truck and blocking it with balloons and posters. The truck was sent by the same group that sent a billboard truck earlier this month near Harvard displaying the names and faces of Harvard students linked to an anti-Israel letter. The group said the students whose names and faces were displayed on the Columbia truck were linked to a statement published earlier this month by Palestinian solidarity groups. Multiple Columbia students told CNN on Wednesday they were alarmed by the “doxxing truck.”“I was at once heartbroken and infuriated.

The Covid-19 pandemic took a toll on the mental health of many college students. Now a new study has found that cases of depression and anxiety were even worse for students who were a racial minority at their schools. More than half of students at a predominantly white university who self-identified as non-white reported feelings of mild depression, according to the University of Georgia study, with 17% reporting they experienced moderate to severe depression. Students attending a historically black college who self-identified as non-Black also experienced higher rates of anxiety and depression than those who were Black. "To be isolated during this time can be associated with depression and anxiety as we found in our study, compounded by a lack of sense of belonging as a result of being a minority group."

The Debt Collective announced it's erasing student debt for former Morehouse College students. It also called for Biden to do the same for all borrowers with federal student debt. The debt that was eliminated is not federal student debt, but rather, institutional debt that a college owns, like unpaid tuition and other school-related expenses. In May of 2022, the Debt Collective took the same action for former Bennett College students, eliminating $1.7 million in college debt for 462 students dating back as far as 1996. Still, the Debt Collective is calling for Biden to act on federal student debt for all borrowers.

Student radicals have been targets of condemnation since at least the early 1960s, when they experimented with new forms of protest against anti-Black racism, the Vietnam War, poverty and censorship. “I think they oughta shoot ‘em if they’re carrying the Vietcong flag,” actor John Wayne said of the protests. In the 1960s, student radicals occasionally waved the Viet Cong flag to show solidarity with the people of Vietnam. But students did have the power to disrupt, to grab camera time and to create the iconic imagery of an era. You may hate these student activists’ words and actions, but they’re not the ones with the power here.

That's where the bipartisan $52.7 billion CHIPS Act comes in, with a goal of having the U.S. compete once again with countries like South Korea and Taiwan in semiconductors. "The CHIPS Act was a bipartisan recognition that is not an acceptable status quo." There is also funding from the CHIPS Act earmarked for worker development. However, as now more than a year has passed since President Joe Biden signed the CHIPS Act into law, many in the U.S. semiconductor industry are waiting for that money to flow into it. The CEO of Pershing Square Capital Management said he wanted to ensure his company and others don’t “inadvertently hire” any students belonging to Harvard groups that signed the letter. Following a backlash to the statement, some of the student groups have since withdrawn their endorsements. But Harvard President Claudine Gay issued a statement Tuesday saying “no student group – not even 30 student groups – speaks for Harvard University or its leadership.”Harvard student groups’ statementThe controversy comes in response to a joint statement released by a coalition of Harvard student groups following the attacks by Hamas that have killed more than 1,000 Israelis and at least 14 American citizens. I see the benefits in kidsWhen I was in high school, I avoided anything but the most basic attempts at school spirit. AdvertisementAdvertisementAfter attending a university with unabashed school spirit and spending over two decades as an academic advisor to middle school, high school, and college students, I've seen the many ways school spirit days can have a positive impact on connection, collaboration, and creativity. At a time when so many students feel isolated among peers, school spirit days can facilitate community bonding by increasing interaction and engagement. For elementary school students, focusing on a few school spirit days with a simple theme that do not require last-minute costume shopping reduces adult overwhelm.
