CNN —At a time when registered nurses are going on strike to protest staffing shortages, thousands of applicants who want to enter or advance in the profession are being turned away from nursing schools. Nearly 78,200 qualified applications were not offered spots at nursing schools last year, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, which represents schools with baccalaureate and advanced degree programs. Staffing shortages are the main reason why nursing schools are not able to accept more students who want to become registered nurses. Staffing shortages are also a major factor in the current strike by more than 75,000 unionized employees, including registered nurses, at Kaiser Permanente. The national median salary for nursing school professors with master’s degrees is just under $89,000, according to the nursing college association.

London CNN —Intelligence officers in Belgium are monitoring Alibaba’s logistics hub in Europe for possible espionage on behalf of the Chinese government. Belgium’s state security service VSSE told CNN Thursday it was watching the activities of Alibaba’s (BABA) logistics arm, Cainiao, at the country’s Liège cargo airport. “We strongly deny the allegations [which are] based on prior conjecture,” Cainiao told CNN in a statement. SEOUL, Sept 19 (Reuters) - South Korea's Doosan Robotics is set to raise 421.2 billion won ($317 million) in an initial public offering (IPO) after pricing the deal at the top of its marketed range. The company is a leading maker of so-called collaborative robots that work side-by-side with humans such as robot arms in factories that perform assembling, loading and welding jobs. The offering for institutional investors was priced at 26,000 won per share compared with a range of 21,000 to 26,000 won. Sales to retail investors at the same price will be completed later this week. After California lawmakers passed a landmark fast-food bill, an independent advocacy group of McDonald's owners is pushing back against what it says will be a "devastating financial blow" to its franchisees in the state, according to a memo to its membership viewed by CNBC. It includes a wage floor of $20 for California workers at fast-food chains with at least 60 locations nationwide, starting April 1. The National Owners Association, an independent advocacy group of more than 1,000 McDonald's owners, projects in the memo the bill will cost each restaurant in the state $250,000 annually. McDonald's sent its own letter to its restaurant system on Monday, which was viewed by CNBC. The new legislation eliminated the threat of joint franchisor-franchisee liability, which McDonald's said would "destroy the franchise model in California and strip thousands of restaurant owners of the right to run their business."
