Against the dollar, the yen last stood at 151.72 , languishing near a one-year low of 151.92 hit on Monday. A break below last year's trough of 151.94 per dollar would mark a fresh 33-year low for the yen. "I'm inclined to also think that it wasn't a BOJ intervention... It intervened again in October 2022 after the yen plunged to a 32-year low of 151.94. The comments have kept the U.S. dollar bid and against the greenback, the New Zealand dollar fell to an over one-week low of $0.58705.

RNC chairwoman Ronna McDaniel reacts next to U.S. President Donald Trump at a fundraising event in New York, U.S., December 2, 2017. Yuri Gripas | ReutersFormer President Donald Trump has grown "increasingly sour" on Republican National Committee chairwoman Ronna McDaniel and the overall leadership of the RNC, according to a person close to the former president. "I do think if there's enough pressure from us and Trump, McDaniel might just decide, 'this is humiliating,' and step down." During a recent interview with conservative commentator Rogan O'Handley, Bannon asked O'Handley what he would like to say to Trump about McDaniel. Beyond the latest slate of Republican losses, the Republican National Committee also appears to be lagging behind the Democratic National Committee in overall fundraising.

Efforts to raise federal minimum pay have fallen flatHowever, despite numerous efforts, raising the federal minimum wage above $7.25 an hour has been unsuccessful. Lagging the rising cost of livingIn many ways, the federal minimum wage seems like a relic of the past. Recent wage gains could be lostThe actual economic impact of a federal minimum wage increase is heavily debated. “The new conventional wisdom is that at least a moderate minimum wage increase has minimal effects on employment,” Reich told CNN. “But this new paper says that a really big minimum wage increase actually increases employment.”

Prepare for volatility and chaos in 2024Kupperman's confidence in his hedge fund is inversely related to his outlook for the economy. "Recent geopolitical events, along with the collapse of bonds in many developed markets, seem likely to lead to an increase in overall market volatility," Kupperman wrote in his letter. If he's right about inflation, his hedge fund would be well-positioned to beat the market for a fifth consecutive year in 2024. "I do the same thing always, which is you buy cheap companies with really strong tailwinds and you hold 'em through the volatility," Kupperman said. For the last 18 months, Kupperman has been convinced that the future is in two commodities: oil and uranium.

Before there was tourism, there was pilgrimage: a trip of endurance, hardship and ecstasy in celebration of one’s faith. On an epic pilgrimage of his own, one writer ventures into the heart of three great religions in Bolivia, Mongolia and Iraq. The Imam Hussein shrine in Karbala the day after Ashura. “They’re poor, but they come thousands of kilometers for the love of Imam Hussein.” PILGRIMAGE WAS A great equalizer. “Labaik ya Hussein,” came the solemn chorus of surrounding voices.

Along the way, Preciado draws attention to the construction of identity and that of the movie itself, fusing form and subject. Preciado’s most provocative conceit is that he shares the role of Orlando with 20 other trans and nonbinary individuals of different ages, hues and shapes. Like her Orlando, his travels widely (if on a shoestring budget), undergoes metamorphoses and weaves through the centuries. By sharing the role of Orlando, Preciado shifts the story from the individual to the collective, taking it out of the private realm and into the public sphere. “I wouldn’t exactly say that either,” Orlando says with a Mona Lisa smile.

The bottom line is that disinflation is real — indeed, spectacular. Are we all the way back to 2 percent inflation? But we’ve gotten most of the way there, without a recession or even a large rise in unemployment. Still, what strikes me about the dire inflation predictions of summer and fall 2022 is their non sequiturness (non sequituritality?). One strand of argument involved parallels with the inflation of the 1970s, which was indeed very hard to get down.

JAKARTA (Reuters) - Indonesia's President Joko Widodo is scheduled to meet U.S. President Joe Biden this month, "most likely" at the White House, a spokesperson for the Southeast Asian country's foreign ministry said on Tuesday. Jokowi, as the president is known, is scheduled to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in San Francisco from Nov. 15-17. Earlier on Tuesday, Jokowi, leader of the world's largest secular Muslim-majority country, said Indonesia's support for Palestine would "never waver". Leading Senate Democrats are teasing a new path forward to bypass one senator’s blockade of military promotions, leaning on GOP frustrations that bubbled to the surface this week and culminated in a dramatic confrontation from members of the senator’s own party. A group of Republican senators took to the Senate floor late Wednesday to attempt to circumvent a dispute in which Sen. Tommy Tuberville has single-handedly held up more than 300 military promotions over a Pentagon abortion travel policy. The stunning scene comes nine months into the blockade and as Democrats – and more recently fellow Republicans – have grown anxious to move the military promotions forward. It would require the support of all Democrats and independents and at least nine Republicans. But they suggested that Tuberville should take his issue to the courts, rather than holding up the chamber and setting a dangerous precedent.

Hong Kong CNN —A shocking video of a Rottweiler mauling a 2-year-old girl in China has prompted a crackdown by local authorities on stray dogs that some argue has now gone too far. Since then, local authorities in a raft of provinces including Shandong, Jiangxi, Yunnan, Hunan, Anhui have stepped up law enforcement, some more heavy-handed than others. Stray dogs are the main targets, but pets who are unleashed can also be subject to control measures. The country is home to 40 million stray dogs, according to the 2021 China Pet Industry white paper. Netanyahu’s tweet comes at a time when he is also under increasing pressure from the families of hostages for a “comprehensive deal” to ensure their release. “At no point was a warning given to Prime Minister Netanyahu on Hamas’s intention to start a war. Opposition leader and former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid also rebuked Netanyahu. Things I said following the press conference should not have been said and I apologize for that,” he wrote on X. Israel’s security chiefs had his “full backing,” he added. Netanyahu was asked about such a deal at his Saturday news conference, and acknowledged he discussed the option with the families.

Robert Brustein, an erudite and contentious advocate for profit-indifferent theater, in the service of which he wore many hats — critic, teacher, producer, director, playwright and even actor — died on Sunday at his home in Cambridge, Mass. His death was confirmed by his wife, Doreen Beinart. Mr. Brustein was dean of the drama school at Yale and founded and ran the Yale Repertory Theater and the American Repertory Theater at Harvard, producing well over 100 plays and securing them in the regional theater firmament. A prolific writer with the zeal of an environmentalist and the moral certainty of a martyr, he reviewed stage productions for The New Republic for more than 50 years. In many books and in countless newspaper and magazine articles, he argued for brave theater, intellectual theater, nonpandering theater, and worried that the art form was being attenuated by the profit motive.

Writing in the Financial Times, former US diplomat Richard Haas urged Israel to rethink its Gaza war. Haas said Israel has the right to attack Hamas but destroying the group is "unlikely to prove doable." The Israeli government has repeatedly said a ground invasion is only a matter of time. That titular syllable is exhaled breathily on the chorus and later, as the song’s intensity builds, shouted like a slur from the cheap seats. “If they call me a slut,” she sings, in a love-struck, lavender haze, “you know it might be worth it for once.”That lyric feels flippant, even half-baked. But it’s also important to remember where, in 2014, Swift was in her evolution. “‘Slut!’” is not a great Taylor Swift song, though it is an interesting one.
