The three-year cruise is canceled
  + stars: | 2023-11-24 | by ( Julia Buckley | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +12 min
But now the dream is over for passengers who’d signed up for Life at Sea Cruises’ inaugural three-year voyage. But on November 17 – less than two weeks before the third departure date – passengers were informed the cruise was off. “In case we weren’t clear, the Life at Sea cruise trip is canceled,” Bayramoglu wrote, giving instructions on the refund process, and how passengers can retrieve “pods” full of their belongings – which they’d shipped in advance of the cruise. If Life at Sea passengers didn’t take up the offer, she said, they’d also be looking to launch a long-term cruise in October 2024. The letter was sent to CNN November 21 and spoke about a potential upcoming cruise date – despite the cruise having already been canceled.

Shares of iRobot , the maker of Roomba vacuums, closed up about 39% Friday after a report said the European Union is set to approve Amazon's $1.7 billion acquisition of the company. Reuters said Thursday morning the deal is set to "win unconditional EU antitrust approval," citing three sources familiar with the matter. The European Commission is expected to rule on the deal by Feb. 14. Representatives from the European Commission didn't immediately respond to CNBC's request for comment. The acquisition marks Amazon's fourth-largest deal, behind its $13.7 billion purchase of grocery chain Whole Foods in 2017, its $8.45 billion purchase of film studio MGM in 2021 and its $3.9 billion acquisition of boutique primary-care provider One Medical, announced last July.

Frederick Wiseman’s transporting documentary “Menus-Plaisirs — Les Troisgros,” centers on a dynasty of French chefs who live and work in a pastoral region in central France named Ouches, some 65 miles west of Lyon. The chef Daniel Boulud includes the Troisgros salmon recipe in several of his cookbooks. “Menus-Plaisirs” is Wiseman’s 44th documentary and the first that he’s made since “City Hall” (2020), which notionally focuses on the administration building for the city of Boston. (In between “City Hall” and “Menus-Plaisirs,” he made one of his rare forays into fiction, “A Couple,” about Sophia Tolstoy.) Wiseman directed, edited and served as one of the producers on “Menus-Plaisirs,” which runs a heroic four hours (about a half-hour shorter than “City Hall”!).

Staff at some Pure Barre, CycleBar, Row House, and other high-end fitness studios aren't being paid. Outposts of CycleBar, Row House, and other pricey fitness studios have also shut their doors, suddenly and sometimes without explanation. In one call reviewed by Business Insider, Brown spoke about drinking his own urine. In his November 8 email to all studio staff, Brown wrote that he "failed all of you." And unlike the fitness studio employees, they didn't find the message or tone of Brown's November 8 email surprising.

Jewelry Designers Are Putting Their Sketches to Work
  + stars: | 2023-11-20 | by ( Melanie Abrams | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
Lorenz Bäumer is convinced that having a special area for sketching in his Paris boutique and hanging original drawings of jewelry designs on its walls has helped distinguish his business from its competitors. “It’s like coming to an artist’s studio and being there with the artist, instead of being at some giant conglomerate jewelry thing that is on the stock market and has 400 stores,” the designer, 57, said. For centuries sketches have been part of the creative process, helping designers to sort through ideas and providing guidance for the artisans who fabricate the pieces. But Mr. Bäumer’s decision to highlight drawing is just one example of the many ways that designers have been putting their sketches to work, using them in everything from social media to sales materials to emphasize the artistry and craftsmanship of their endeavors.

“I just like digging for things and finding treasure,” Irini Arakas said. He held a bouquet of flowers and flashed a hand gesture that some might consider offensive. Ms. Arakas is the founder of Prova, a fashion line she started in the early 2000s after leaving her job as an accessories writer at Vogue. It has been dormant for almost 10 years, but now she has started its second act with the new line of necklaces. The original Prova, featuring necklaces, scarves and apparel in mix-and-match fabrics with eclectic trims and a profusion of pearls and beads, had fans like Michelle Obama, a repeat Prova buyer at the Ikram boutique in Chicago, and Taylor Swift, photographed in one of its dresses for a 2011 Teen Vogue issue.

If you’re confused about why Congress would remove education from departments of “correction,” you’re not alone. New York has an extraordinary, diverse network of partnerships that replicates the diversity of college across the state. And, inspired by Catholic mission, Holy Cross College and the University of Notre Dame, Boston College and Villanova have led the way in their red, blue and purple home states. Incarcerated students majoring in history or literature all write original senior theses that are typically 100 pages in length. Pell Grants, which average less than $4,500, never covered the cost even for modest programs.

It is known for its sustainable practices, including free public transport. I was especially looking forward to free travel by train as it's more sustainable than flying or driving. Met a representative from Visit Luxembourg for a walking tour and lunch at a local restaurant. In comparison, my flight from Edinburgh took about five hours, not including travel time to the airport. More importantly buyers – in the form of private equity firms – are starting to line up. "Growth is clearly harder so we'll see a lot of M&A because PE funds are trying to grow their business and so are looking at early-stage tech businesses." This increased interest means private equity is set to play an enlarged role in Europe's startup ecosystem. Rollups, where private equity firms buy up a bunch of small businesses in an industry and consolidate them into a larger company, are also on the acquisition hunt. Crucially, private equity funds are unlikely to approach deals for companies that are not yet profitable, or unlikely to become so in the short term.

After three years of record growth, luxury companies are feeling the pain as sales slow to a more normal pace. Nowhere have the struggles of the luxury sector been more prominent than in the French conglomerate LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton , the group's bellwether. This dynamic tends to hurt the less-prestigious luxury brands more, according to Rogerio Fujimori, an analyst at Stifel. The laces and classic body shape are characteristic of traditional men’s dress shoes, while the rugged rubber soles still make a statement with any formal outfit. “Good leather shoes are not an arena in which it pays to cut costs,” he says, recommending investing in “the pair of a decade” from this made-in-England favorite. The style is “acceptable to wear with dress clothes,” confirms Los Angeles-based personal stylist Rayne Parvis, who advises people to wear these sneakers in place of brown lace-up dress shoes.

Zalando now expects 2023 revenue to fall between 0.5% and 3%, having previously guided to a 1% decline at worst. An unusually warm September weighed on sales of autumn and winter clothes, Zalando said, exacerbating the impact of weak consumer sentiment. Gross merchandise volume - a measure of sales on the platform by Zalando and partner brands - fell by 2.4% from a year ago. Eventually, he invites Priscilla to visit him, only to knock her out for two days with insomnia meds and then whisk her to Las Vegas, where, in a montage of gambling and boozing, Coppola shows Priscilla start to extend her hand for pills herself. For Priscilla, living with Elvis means living with his entourage. Coppola frames a shot of the actress looking out Graceland’s windows as if Priscilla were a Douglas Sirk heroine, trapped. It also brings “Priscilla” closer to Coppola’s aesthetic, freeing her from the literalism of a conventional biopic. The exhibition seeks to foreground Aghion at the brand, repositioning Chloé as a historically important fashion name and giving the museum a pop culture edge. Do you think this is a teachable moment about cultural preconceptions, an effort by the museum to reach a new audience, or both? The Jewish Museum has mounted art-historically important exhibitions, though as you say, infrequently about fashion (their first was a buoyant Isaac Mizrahi survey in 2016). It’s rare for one show to focus on a single ready-to-wear brand such as Chloé. Yet that’s what the Jewish Museum is doing, and it suggests that brand has something very important to say.
