S&P Global Ratings may downgrade Boeing bonds due to cash issues amid a strike. The strike risks Boeing's recovery and affects 737 Max production — and the company's cash flow. Moody's also recently put Boeing on a downgrade review. AdvertisementTo add to Boeing's list of troubles, S&P Global Ratings is considering downgrading its bonds because of the company's growing cash problems amid a mass workers' strike. Last month, another credit agency, Moody's, also put the company on a downgrade review, citing the strike and its impact on cash flow.

Workers picket outside a Boeing Co. facility during a strike in Everett, Washington, US, on Monday, Sept. 16, 2024. Boeing Co. factory workers walked off the job for the first time in 16 years, halting manufacturing across the planemaker's Seattle hub after members of its largest union voted overwhelmingly to reject a contract offer and go on strike. Boeing withdrew a contract offer for 33,000 machinists who have been on strike since mid-September, and said further negotiations "do not make sense at this point." Boeing later sweetened the offer, increasing pay raises, a ratification bonus and other improvements, which the union turned down, arguing that it was not negotiated. The union, the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, said Tuesday that Boeing refused to improve wages, retirement plans and vacation or sick leave.

Boeing and union leaders resumed negotiations on Monday but reached a stalemate by the end of Tuesday. AdvertisementTalks between Boeing and union leaders have broken down two days after restarting. The first offer of a 25% pay rise was overwhelmingly rejected, while the union criticized Boeing for sending its second offer to the media and not negotiating with union leaders. "The company was hell-bent on standing on the non-negotiated offer," the union negotiating committee for IAM District 751 said on Tuesday. The IAM District 751 negotiating committee also said it "remains ready to continue mediated or direct talks."

In the long list of issues with in-flight entertainment, passengers on a recent flight from Sydney to Tokyo may have been exposed to a new one: A sexually explicit movie playing on every screen. Australian airline Qantas has now apologized after the incident during a flight last week. Technical issues made individual movie selection unavailable, so a movie was selected out of a limited list for the entire flight based on a request from some passengers, the airline said. "The movie they played was extremely inappropriate," a passenger who said they were on the flight from Sydney to Tokyo's Haneda Airport, wrote on Reddit. “All screens were changed to a family friendly movie for the rest of the flight, which is our standard practice for the rare cases where individual movie selection isn’t possible," it added.

Boeing delivered 33 airplanes in September, six more than during the same period a year earlier, as the company and its customers keep an eye on the impact of a machinist strike, now in its fourth week. Through September, Boeing has handed over 291 aircraft, well below the 371 it had delivered in the first nine months of 2023. Deliveries are key to Boeing. It's already burned through more than $8 billion this year since customers pay the bulk of the price when they receive the airplane. The two sides are back at the negotiating table this week, though the union dismissed a sweetened offer from Boeing last month.

New York CNN —Boeing and the union that represents 33,000 striking employees at the company say talks between the two have broken down and no new talks are scheduled. A previous tentative agreement between the union and Boeing ahead of the strike was rejected nearly unanimously by the members now on strike. Union members are angry that they lost the traditional pension plan that they had at Boeing until 10 years ago. Boeing on Tuesday said that it is trying to reach a deal with the union that will bring the strike to an end. But the union said Boeing refused to improve the publicly disclosed offer of two weeks ago.

The C919 is China’s first homegrown mainline passenger plane, manufactured by the Shanghai-based state-owned Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). Steven Jiang/CNNI was happy to hear the flight attendant highlight the aircraft type in his pre-takeoff briefing. “Today you’re flying with Air China C919 aircraft, which is the first large airliner independently developed by China,” he said, as the jet taxied to the runway. Air China serves hot meals in economy during meal hours even for short-haul flights (today’s flying time: 1 hour 40 minutes). As far as my passenger expectation goes, this C919 flight has earned a solid B in terms of safety and comfort.

CNN —US job growth surged in September, blowing past expectations and providing solid reassurance for the ongoing stability of the labor market. Employers added an estimated 254,000 jobs in September, according to data released Friday by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “The outlook for the economy in the months ahead is quite favorable, according to the September jobs report. As job gains dropped off from their once breakneck pace, economists were quick to note that the labor market was merely slowing and not at risk of imminent collapse. “The labor market is strong,” she said.

Then union members will get additional $4-per-hour raises every year during the life of the six-year tentative deal. The union had been willing to consider the $4-an-hour deal before the strike, union boss Harold Daggett said on the picket line outside the Port of New York and New Jersey early Tuesday, soon after the start of the strike. Thursday’s deal likely is the end of the strike, but it doesn’t close the door on a new strike in the future. Should the members vote against the deal, the strike might start once again. But union members voted nearly unanimously to reject it and have remained on strike since September 13.

Rome CNN —More than 180 people were evacuated Thursday from a Ryanair Boeing passenger jet after it caught fire while taxiing to take off at Brindisi Airport in southern Italy. A spokesperson for the airport in Brindisi confirmed there had been a fire that halted air traffic for several hours. Ryanair, the Irish budget airline group that operates Europe’s largest aircraft fleet, said all 184 passengers and crew were safely evacuated on the runway after Thursday’s incident. On Tuesday, another Ryanair aircraft – flight FR846 – headed into Milan Bergamo airport from Barcelona had a tire issue upon landing, which briefly closed the destination airport. Boeing, the manufacturer of both aircraft involved in this week’s incidents, referred CNN to Ryanair.

CNN —September’s jobs report, due out Friday morning, is expected to show that the US labor market has slowed somewhat but remains on solid footing. While September’s employment data is expected to stay relatively tame, the same can’t be said for the October jobs report, which is set to be released on November 1, just days before the presidential election. The strikes and hurricane-related effects “are not going to permanently alter the trajectory of the labor market; but September is probably our last clean reading on the labor market for a while,” Ryan Sweet, chief US economist at Oxford Economics, told CNN earlier this week. The August jobs report, which showed better-than-expected estimated 142,000 payroll gains and a drop in the unemployment rate, went a long way to quell those fears. It showed that the jobs market is in “stasis,” Wells Fargo economists wrote in a note issued Tuesday.

Boeing and Virgin Galactic have settled a lawsuit stemming from Boeing's work on Virgin Galactic's space tourism "mothership," according to a Thursday filing in Virginia federal court. Virgin Galactic attorney Brett Williamson and Boeing said in emails that the lawsuit was "satisfactorily resolved by mutual agreement of the parties." Boeing sued Virgin in March, accusing it of stealing trade secrets and refusing to pay $25 million owed for Boeing's work. Virgin said it was entitled to monetary damages of at least "the difference between the $45.6 million paid by Virgin Galactic to Boeing and the substantially lower actual value of Boeing's performance." New York CNN —With barely a month to go before the US presidential election, a trifecta of economic shocks is threatening to sap Vice President Kamala Harris’ momentum on voters’ No. 1 issue: a port strike, a hurricane and an escalation of fighting in the Middle East. Price pain could crop up elsewhere if the East Coast port strike, which began Tuesday, drags on longer than a week. “If the Boeing strike and the port strike … last through the second week of October, job growth for October could be negative,” researchers at Oxford Economics wrote Wednesday. Terms of the tentative deal on wages were not immediately available Thursday evening. A tentative deal would still need to be ratified by the rank-and-file ILA members before it would take effect.
