Unlike in most European countries, the president of Finland holds executive power in formulating foreign and security policy, particularly when dealing with countries outside the European Union like the United States, Russia and China. “Clearly, the main task of the president is to steer foreign policy,” said Teivo Teivainen, professor of world politics at the University of Helsinki. Finland became the Western military alliance’s 31st member in April last year, much to the annoyance of Russia and President Vladimir Putin. Under the Finnish Constitution, the president decides on foreign and security policy issues together with the government. Late last year, Finland closed its border with Russia after some 1,300 migrants without proper documentation or visas arrived across the frontier just months after Finland joined NATO.

New York (CNN) — US stocks rallied powerfully last week after a topsy-turvy start to the month. History indicates that if the market can cling to those gains, that could bode well for the rest of the year. But last week, all three major indexes turned positive for the year as tech stocks led the broader market higher. The January barometer, introduced in the Stock Trader’s Almanac, states that however stocks perform during January, their year-end performance will follow suit. That is good news for the 85 million homeowning households that enjoyed further gains in housing wealth, said Lawrence Yun, chief economist at NAR.

Proper form can help you lift more effectively and avoid the most common gym injuries, according to a physical therapist. Many people struggle with a lack of ankle mobility in the squat, setting them up for inefficient form, Simeonovski said. For example, when bench pressing, aim to keep the elbows around a 45-degree angle instead of directly out to the side in a T shape to correctly engage the chest muscles instead of stressing out the shoulder joint.

So now you start compounding the implications on life sciences, and biosciences and it gets really, really exciting. I will say this, I don't think that it is currently popular to espouse an overwhelmingly positive sentiment, because I think it is seen as naive. I think we are so wrapped up in the Terminator Skynet idea, and I just don't think that's even remotely interesting given what we think we're building. I point to nuclear as the best example of how one policy, especially influenced by public perception, can have a really, really incredible consequence on the human experience. I think there is not enough attention paid to the issue of AI versus AI.

That threshold describes a long-term average rather than a single-year anomaly. But because it describes a multidecade average, the measure will always be backward-looking, with the precise moment the world crossed the 1.5 mark clear only in retrospect. This year a handful of prominent scientists have suggested that when we do look back to mark that time, we may well circle 2023. Not that long ago, it would have been pretty contentious to suggest that the world’s most ambitious climate goal was already lost. Perhaps 2024 is the year we may finally be ready to retire it publicly, too.

I first spoke to Kwasi Mitchell, Deloitte's first chief purpose officer, in March about change in corporate America. For one, his role evolved from broadly touching on sustainability, equity, and social impact to overseeing all DEI — diversity, equity and inclusion — responsibilities at the consulting firm. Mitchell's insights are part of Business Insider's year-end leadership package, "Looking Ahead 2024," which digs into vision, strategy, and challenges across corporate America. I distinctly remember sitting across the table, starting to work with our collaborators on what actually could this be. Having a coalescing force with a few organizations to drive momentum could be really really interesting and impactful in the future.

One year ago, natural pet food brand NUTRO™ announced the start of their Greater Ground™ program whose mission is to encourage growers to adopt healthy soil practices. This aims to raise awareness of the importance of healthy soil and to encourage select growers in their network to implement healthy soil practices by providing training, support, and funding. Because growers can face many barriers in adopting healthy soil practices on their farms, the NUTRO™ Greater Ground program also offers Soil Growth grants which provide financial support to selected growers within their network. These grants help with the transition costs needed to implement healthy soil practices. In the fable, one neighbor helps the other transform their farm using healthy soil practices.

Just nine months after closing its deal to acquire One Medical, Amazon is exerting more control over the primary care provider's employee pay. Prior to the Amazon acquisition, One Medical gave stock grants without baking in any growth assumptions. Like One Medical, Amazon reinforces this through its competitive total compensation program which, for corporate employees, typically includes base pay and restricted stock units (RSUs). As One Medical is now part of Amazon and can no longer grant employees One Medical stock, we are transitioning employees to Amazon's stock-based compensation model. The path to financing the world's transition to green energy remains unclear. Financing the green energy transition is a trillion-dollar question. AdvertisementThe Deloitte Financing the Green Energy Transition report outlines some core financial levers, starting with a fundamental financial principle: the riskier the project, the higher the cost of capital. The report estimates that getting this right could ultimately reduce financing costs by around $50 trillion by 2050. So, what are the associated risks, and what steps can we take to mitigate them and, consequently, reduce financing costs?

Piper Sandler reiterated its buy-equivalent rating on Nvidia's stock and $620 per-share price target, which implies nearly 33% upside from its Friday close. After Nvidia's more-than-200% stock-price gain this year, investors are wondering what's "new" about Nvidia, Jim Cramer said Monday. The answer to that question is software, Jim said, which could eventually help offset the historically boom-and-bust nature of semiconductor sales. Over time, though, Piper Sandler believes software can become a "significant portion" of Nvidia's total revenue. Despite our alignment with Piper Sandler on Nvidia's long-term software opportunity, Jim on Monday cautioned that its stock could be due for a breather.

On a Democratic primary debate stage in Brooklyn in 2016, Senator Bernie Sanders caused a ruckus within his party when he rebuked Hillary Clinton for not mentioning Palestinian rights in a speech she made to a pro-Israel lobbying group. “If we are ever going to bring peace to that region,” Mr. Sanders said in remarks that drew cheers and applause from the audience, “we are going to have to treat the Palestinian people with respect and dignity.” He added, “That does not make me anti-Israel.”The comment delighted liberal critics of Israel’s policies in the occupied West Bank and Gaza and alarmed mainstream Democrats, who were more accustomed to seeing presidential candidates compete to showcase their airtight alignment with the Jewish state. It was an early indication of what would become a profound divide within the Democratic Party over Israel, pitting young progressives and people of color against older, whiter and more pro-Israel voters, and it positioned Mr. Sanders, the progressive icon from Vermont, on the leading edge of it. But years later, amid the latest war in Gaza that began after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 civilians and taking around 240 people hostage, Mr. Sanders has found himself at odds with many of the same progressive activists and groups who powered his presidential campaigns and once revered him for his willingness to publicly question the actions of the Jewish state.
