A small business group is suing to block a law that was designed to stop money-laundering by rooting out the use of anonymous shell companies. The Corporate Transparency Act, the law’s formal name, was passed as part of annual defense spending legislation and signed into law last year. The group filed its lawsuit with Isaac Winkles of Huntsville, Ala., who owns a small business managing real-estate properties. The lawsuit poses a new challenge to FinCEN, which has already missed the mandated timeline for launching the corporate-ownership database. In addition to setting up the corporate-transparency database, the law also requires FinCEN to take a number of other steps—a whistleblower award program, among others—to strengthen the U.S.’s anti-money-laundering safeguards.
WASHINGTON — With the 2022 election over, Congress will return to work Monday with a packed to-do list for the final weeks of the year. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., and Susan Collins, R-Maine, is expected to get a vote in the lame duck session. A package of revisions to the bill easily cleared the Senate Rules and Administration Committee on a 14-1 vote in September. Same-sex marriage billThe House has passed a bipartisan bill to codify federal recognition of same-sex marriage. The Senate punted it to the lame duck session, with the leader of the effort, Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., saying the chamber needed more time to secure 60 votes.

The print readership of the three Alabama newspapers has been shrinking rapidly. A view of downtown Birmingham, Ala.One of the nation’s biggest publishers has decided to stop printing Alabama’s three largest newspapers and make them digital-only, the latest in a long string of local paper closures across America. Advance Publications , which owns 24 newspapers as well as the Condé Nast magazine-publishing empire, plans to announce it will end the print operations of the Birmingham News, the Huntsville Times and Mobile’s Press-Register in February.
Voters in Tennessee, Alabama, Louisiana, Oregon, and Vermont will be voting on changing this legislation. The landmark 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, ratified on December 6, 1865, officially abolished slavery but allowed it to continue as a punishment in prisons against convicted felons. For states in the former Confederacy, the loophole was a tool to maintain the dynamics of slavery, post-abolition, said AP. But in some states, including Alabama, inmates get paid nothing for their work. "For an entire generation, it put Black men and women back into slavery by incarcerating them and selling their labor to private corporations," said Chase.
Oct 21 (Reuters) - U.S. environmental group the Sierra Club said on Friday that the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) is abandoning legal efforts in North Carolina to secure land necessary for its proposed Southgate extension. Were it completed, the Southgate project would have added 75 miles (121 km) of pipeline from Southern Virginia into central North Carolina, the statement by Sierra Club read, adding that without the land, the extension is unlikely to ever be built. Mountain Valley - owned by units of Equitrans (ETRN.N), NextEra Energy Inc (NEE.N), Consolidated Edison Inc (ED.N), AltaGas Ltd (ALA.TO) and RGC Resources (RGCO.O) - is one of several U.S. pipeline projects delayed by regulatory and legal fights with environmental and local groups that found problems with federal permits issued during President Donald Trump's administration. read moreRegister now for FREE unlimited access to Reuters.com RegisterReporting by Seher Dareen in Bengaluru; Editing by Bill BerkrotOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
WASHINGTON — The Biden administration says it is in critical need of more money to bring the Jan. 6 rioters to justice. The Justice Department has told Congress that more than $34 million in funding is "critically needed" to fund the investigation. “The cases are unprecedented in scale and is expected to be among the most complex investigations prosecuted by the Department of Justice,” the Justice Department wrote to the legislative branch. Before they broke for recess, lawmakers involved in the talks told NBC News that the fate of the Justice request was still unsettled. I don’t have any problem giving the Justice Department the resources it needs to do that,” he said.
WASHINGTON — Leaders of major civil rights organizations on Monday condemned Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala., for suggesting at a Trump rally over the weekend that descendants of Black slaves are criminals in remarks about reparations. "Senator Tuberville’s comments are flat out racist, ignorant and utterly sickening," NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in a statement. As a speaker at former President Donald Trump's rally Saturday in Minden, Nevada, Tuberville called Democrats "soft on crime" and "pro-crime." National Urban League President Marc H. Morial on Monday called Tuberville's comments "bigoted" and "stunning." A request for comment was not immediately returned by Tuberville’s Senate office.
“Tim Ryan is running the best Senate race in the country and having to do it all by his lonesome,” said Irene Lin, an Ohio-based Democratic strategist who managed Tom Nelson’s Senate primary campaign in Wisconsin this year. After losing two presidential campaigns and a race for governor in the state since 2016, national Democrats are wary about spending in Ohio, once a quintessential battleground. The barrage includes a spot attacking Ryan, who has portrayed himself as a moderate, as a party-line voter beholden to Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer. Other national Democrats have tipped their hat to Ryan, noting how his moderate message has put the seat within striking distance, if not higher on the party’s list of priorities. “The national Democrats have walked away from Ohio prematurely,” Griffin said.
WASHINGTON — The Senate voted Tuesday to move forward with funding the government through mid-December ahead of a Friday deadline to avert a shutdown. The short-term funding measure includes money for Ukraine aid, Afghan resettlement, parolees and security enhancements for U.S. courts, among other provisions. Republicans, still angry about Manchin's vote for the Democrats-only bill in August, credibly threatened to tank the government funding bill if his permitting measure was tacked on. During the Senate vote, Manchin reached out to Republicans to discuss restarting negotiations over a permitting package, including Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La., Cassidy said. "The fact that Joe traded his vote for permitting reform doesn’t make permitting reform any less of a noble venture," Cramer said.
That's good news for residents of several states, according to a new U.S. News and World Report analysis, which ranked all 50 states according to how polluted they are and the risk that pollution poses to their population's health. That ranking is consistent with other 2022 analyses: The American Lung Association (ALA) says Vermont's cities are among the cleanest by air quality in the country, and have low levels of the most harmful and widespread types of air pollution. The state's Burlington-South metro area in particular is one of only two U.S. cities that rank as the cleanest for the worst types of air pollution, which include particle pollution and ozone air pollution. In 2022, the ALA said the state's air quality got "mixed grades." Several pieces of research point to the state's poor air quality.

Alan Miller was sent to death row for the 1999 workplace murders of three co-workers at two locations in Pelham, Ala.WASHINGTON—The Supreme Court voted 5-4 late Thursday to let Alabama execute an inmate by lethal injection, setting aside lower-court decisions finding prison officials likely violated the condemned killer’s right under state law to choose death by nitrogen hypoxia instead. The Alabama attorney general’s office said the execution would proceed Thursday, before the death warrant expired at midnight.

Smoke from wildfires has worsened over the past decade, potentially reversing decades of improvements in Western air quality made under the Clean Air Act, according to research published Thursday from Stanford University. The new analysis reveals a picture of daily exposure to wildfire smoke in better geographic detail than ever before. Where Wildfire Smoke Pollution Increased Over the Past Decade 0 0.25 0.5 1 2 4+ micrograms of PM2.5 Seattle Spokane WASH. Portland MAINE Missoula MONT. FLA. Micrograms of PM2.5 0 0.25 0.5 1 2 4+ Note: Map shows increase in average wildfire smoke from 2006-2010 to 2016-2020. The research isolated wildfire smoke from background pollution from other sources, which has actually decreased in recent decades.
Researchers focused on 10 categories related to voting, including registration, inconvenience, early voting, polling hours and absentee voting. The state also stopped using special voting deputies, officials whose tasks had sometimes included conducting voter registration drives, according to the study. To assess the voting laws passed after the 2020 election, this year’s Cost of Voting Index study added new categories and scoring. While the political debate surrounding new election laws has centered on ballots and the voting process, the Cost of Voting Index also gives heavy weight to the ease of voter registration. States rank higher in the index if they allow voter registration drives, provide automatic voter registration, offer same-day registration and maintain longer periods in which to register.
More than 1,600 books were banned in over 5,000 schools during the last school year, with most of the bans targeting titles related to the LGBTQ community or race and racism, according to a new report. PEN America, a nonprofit that advocates for free expression in literature, released a report Monday, the start of Banned Books Week, that shows the sweeping scope of efforts to ban certain books during the 2021-22 school year. Books were banned in 5,049 schools with a combined enrollment of nearly 4 million students in 32 states, the report found. Friedman pointed to a case in Walton County, Florida, where a popular children’s book called “Everywhere Babies” landed on a banned books list last spring. The most frequently banned books were “Gender Queer: A Memoir,” by Maia Kobabe, followed by “All Boys Aren’t Blue,” by George M. Johnson and “Out of Darkness” by Ashley Hope Pérez, the report found.

Gerrit Cole (12-7) earned the win with four hits, four runs, three walks and eight strikeouts in five innings. Eloy Jimenez had three hits, including a two-run home run, and drove in three runs. Willi Castro hit a two-run homer and Javier Baez had a solo shot for the Tigers. Rays 5, Rangers 3Christian Bethancourt and Jose Siri hit back-to-back homers in host Tampa Bay's win over Texas. The duo went deep in the second inning for a 2-1 lead that the Rays never relinquished.
Air pollution takes a toll on your lungs and can be bad for your brain, increasing psychological stress and cognitive decline in adults. At least 85 cancer cases per year in the state are due to exposure to high levels of air pollution, according to a January 2022 study from Tulane University. Nevada's status as the second-most polluted state is also seemingly well deserved: In 2021, the American Lung Association also ranked the state's air quality among "the unhealthiest for the most harmful and widespread types of air pollution." Oregon's website notes that cars and trucks are the state's largest source of air pollution, and frequent wildfires only worsen the state's poor air quality. Vermont's cities are among the cleanest by air quality in the country, and have particularly low levels of the most harmful types of air pollution, the ALA says.
