This holiday season, shoppers who ring up purchases on credit cards will pay more interest if they carry balances from month to month after the Federal Reserve's string of rate hikes. Already, investors and retailers have paid closer attention to credit card payments — and some have cited them as a concern. The company, which has its own branded credit cards, has seen lower revenues from those cards because of costs associated with bad debt and related write-offs. Mitchell said student debt, auto loans and mortgages have all become bigger burdens in a high interest rate environment. For retailer-issued cards, the average interest rate is nearly 30%, a record high, according to data from Bankrate.

MILWAUKEE (AP) — Damian Lillard acknowledged this season opener felt a little different from the others as he adjusted to switching teams for the first time. Lillard scored 39 points and the Milwaukee Bucks regrouped after blowing a 19-point lead to beat the Philadelphia 76ers 118-117 on Thursday night. Lillard had the highest point total for a player making his Bucks debut, surpassing the 34 that Terry Cummings scored in 1984. For many if not most Republican primary voters, Mr. Trump is the equivalent of an incumbent president (and to some, he still is president), and incumbents generally get renominated with ease. Several members of the group had positive things to say about Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley and some of the other candidates. So far, the other Republican candidates for president aren’t breaking through and giving these voters reasons to pass on Mr. Trump’s candidacy. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Burt Young, the Oscar-nominated actor who played Paulie, the rough-hewn, mumbling-and-grumbling best friend, corner-man and brother-in-law to Sylvester Stallone in the “Rocky” franchise, has died. Young had roles in acclaimed films and television shows including “Chinatown,” “Once Upon a Time in America" and “The Sopranos.”But he was always best known for playing Paulie Pennino in six “Rocky” movies. The short, paunchy, balding Young was the sort of actor who always seemed to play middle-aged no matter his age. It won three, including best picture. In 1985's “Rocky IV” he reprograms a robot Rocky gives him into a sexy-voiced servant who dotes on him.

Apple considered buying Bing from Microsoft in 2018
  + stars: | 2023-10-05 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +6 min
Apple executives have said they picked Google because it's the best search engine, not primarily because of Google's payments. The deal with Microsoft wasn't completed and Giannandrea said he believed Apple CEO Tim Cook told Microsoft it wasn't going forward. Google pays Apple as much as $19 billion per year to be the default search engine on Apple products, according to an estimate . Microsoft was interested in Apple paying for improvements to the search engine, Giannandrea said, including expanding it to additional international markets. He also compared Bing and Google search in 2021 to see the progress Microsoft had made and found Google was significantly better at mobile queries.

But it also shows how Apple has wrestled with Google’s rise and how some at Apple yearned for “optionality.” Apple didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. (Last week, Nadella testified that he has spent every year of his tenure as CEO trying to persuade Apple to adopt Bing.) He made a similar argument internally about DuckDuckGo, saying in an email that moving ahead with that partnership was “probably a bad idea.” (DuckDuckGo licenses search results from Bing.) Still, Giannandrea testified, some within Apple thought that dealing with Bing in some fashion could yield benefits to Apple. Apple today has the enormous resources to build a true rival to Google, Giannandrea testified.
