Selipsky does work at a "big company" of course, but he doesn't want Amazon to feel that way. At Amazon, it's always supposed to be "Day 1," the dawn of a new era where the customer comes first and bold bets are backed. Selipsky said in the staff meeting that Amazon has to keep the mentality that "we are going to be the insurgents." Economic update: I wrote a week ago that the dream scenario for the economy was looking more likely by the day. More than 30 people involved in the tech industry told us the real problem was lazy managers.

The US jobs market is still on 🔥. Still, recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows a job market that's running hot. Average hourly earnings increased 0.4% month on month and are up 4.4% on last year. The dream scenario for the economy is to get inflation under control without a sharp spike in unemployment or a recession. So far, the job market has remained robust.

Interior view of the Bank of England by Joseph Michael Gandy. Photo: Sir John Soane's Museum/Bridgeman ImagesDuring the 18th century, the British Empire rose to global dominance by developing a new model of organized government, one that proved especially effective at converting the wealth of a free society into the power of a fiscal-military state. At the heart of this system was the Bank of England, “the grand Palladium of Public Credit,” as the Bank’s inspectors described it in 1784.

Elon Musk’s secret game plan for Tesla

"Tesla is happy to support other EVs via our Supercharger network," Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted, replying to President Joe Biden's announcement. And by tapping into a vehicle's battery management system, Tesla may be able to get even more data from its competitors. There were jokes for years that Tesla was actually a carbon-credit company pretending to be a car company. For a while it looked as if it were going to be an insurance company pretending to be a car company. Now, I think it's going to be a data company — which may just be the thing that winds up keeping it afloat.

The bar is higher for diagnostic programs than it is for programs that write our notes. But the way we typically test advances in medicine — a rigorously designed randomized clinical trial that takes years — won’t work here. But even as he prepares to embrace new technology, Dr. Rodman wonders if something will be lost. writing our notes for us, Dr. Rodman sees a trade-off. At the same time, patients will be using these technologies, asking questions and coming to us with potential answers.

The result was the Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). Passed in 1914, its framework stands to this day, with many of its rules directly evolving from the Titanic tragedy. The unsinkable ship: When the Titanic set sail from Southampton, it was the world’s largest ocean liner, built with state-of-the-art maritime technology that many thought made it unsinkable. Such was the belief in the Titanic that safety regulations of the day were not updated to keep pace with the technology. Lessons from Titan: Maritime experts and historians have noted the Titan submersible operated outside of the regulations prompted by the Titanic disaster, and did not need to conform to safety regulations, since it operated in international waters.

In the face of an unprecedented semiconductor shortage, Europe is offering billions of euros in subsidies to reduce its dependence on Asia. In return, Intel is committing big sums and with Germany already bagging a 30 billion euro investment, Poland decided to crash the party. Poland initially impressed Intel executives with the speed in which it responded to queries and addressed concerns, Intel said. "When we began the process, we hadn't considered Poland," Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger told Reuters. But when Intel announced its European investments in March 2022, Germany was awarded a major factory in Magdeburg while Intel told Poland it would only expand its existing facility in Gdansk.

From OceanGate/FILEThe missing submersible is a small vessel designed to only hold five people for a day — two hours down, several hours exploring the Titanic and two hours back to the surface. Last year, the founder of tour operator OceanGate Expeditions showed a CBS team the inside of a submersible used to visit the Titanic's wreckage. The CBS video shows a small chamber, with about as much space as a minivan. There's only one small toilet in the vessel's front, which "doubles as the best seat in the house," according to an OceanGate webpage that's no longer available. It added that when the toilet is being used, they install a privacy curtain "and turn the music up loud."

A submersible, such as the missing Titan vessel, is a type of watercraft — but it has some key differences from the better-known submarine. Unlike submarines, a submersible needs a mother ship to launch it. The Titan's support ship was the Polar Prince, a former Canadian Coast Guard icebreaking ship, according to the ship's co-owner Horizon Maritime. A submarine can also stay underwater much longer, while submersibles have much fewer power reserves, according to OceanGate, the company operating the Titan expedition, in a webpage seen by CNN that is no longer available. The Titan has 96 hours of life support, and its dives down to the Titanic wreckage usually last 10 to 11 hours, according to the site — compared to submarines that can stay underwater for months.

Storm chaser Brian Emfinger tells CNN that Thursday's tornado cut through some of the main sections of Perryton, Texas. Emfinger said the worst he saw was in the northwest part of town. People there had little warning as the tornado touched down, barreling toward a mobile home park directly in its path, he said. “The storm produced a wall cloud very quickly, and that wall cloud tightened up very rapidly and then it just went to the ground very quickly,” Emfinger said. Usually with a strong tornado, there’s a lot of leeway time for people to prepare, he said.

Dr. Chatbot will see you now

Almost invariably, the chatbot answers were rated as three or four times as reliable as the ones from the poor wee humans. But here's the most striking part: The chatbot answers, on average, were rated seven times as empathetic as the ones from humans. It's as if the unfeeling android Mr. Data figured out how to convincingly emulate Dr. Crusher's comforting bedside manner. Give those medical chatbots access to people's individual medical records, and they could offer more precisely directed advice. Healthcare AI startups will want the cheapest versions with the most financial bang, which won't necessarily have the best patient outcomes.

A video shared online shows a house being washed down the Dnipro River. An expert told Insider the dam explosion is a "disaster" and will cause catastrophic flooding. The video, which was first published on Telegram and has since been verified by the BBC, shows the red roof of the large house as it is flushed down the Dnipro River. The house in the video was later identified by BBC reporter Adam Robinson, who shared aerial pictures of it from June 2020. Dr. Stephen Hall, a politics lecturer at the University of Bath, told Insider that the explosion is a "humanitarian disaster" that will have several implications in the weeks to come.

To figure out what GPT-4 has read, they quizzed it on its knowledge of various books, as if it were a high-school English student. One way to answer the question is to look for information that could have come from only one place. Genre — sci-fi, mystery, romance, horror — is, broadly speaking, more interesting, partially because these books have plots where things actually happen. Bamman's GPT-4 list is a Borgesian library of episodic connections, cliffhangers, third-act complications, and characters taking arms against seas of troubles (and whales). See what a bot makes of Gene Wolfe's "The Book of the New Sun," maybe, or Sheri Tepper's "Grass."
Every two minutes or so, all over the world, someone asks someone else for a small favor. But what happens in those rare instances when someone declines to do a favor? Even when humans decline a request for a favor, they almost never say the word no out loud. Now, maybe that's true, and if they keep doing it, pretty quickly you won't be that person's friend anymore." In Parched Arizona, the Produce Gardens Bloom
  + stars: | 2023-05-08 | by ( Brett Anderson | Adam Riding | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
In the face of a historic drought, gardeners and small farmers across Arizona are growing produce with a surprisingly scant amount of a precious ingredient: water. They are converting lawns to forest gardens, and tending urban farms in food deserts around Phoenix. And many are drawing on the agricultural knowledge of Native Americans, who thrived in the arid Southwest before colonization. Their work is inspiring. And if the rest of the state can follow their example, fast-growing Arizona could serve as a model of how the Southwest can survive a water crisis that is only getting worse.
A lawyer for writer E. Jean Carroll told jurors on Monday that Donald Trump followed a "playbook" he had for kissing and groping women without their consent before he raped Carroll in a New York department store dressing room in the mid-1990s. Kaplan showed jurors a snippet of the "Access Hollywood" tape, when Trump boasted in 2005 about touching women without their consent. Kaplan told jurors: "What is he doing here he is telling you in his own words his modus operandi, his MO…he kissed them without their consent." "The evidence shows overwhelmingly he followed this playbook and in the dressing room there grabbed [Carroll] by the p---y," she said. In his deposition in the case, Trump told Kaplan that "unfortunately or fortunately," for "millions of years," stars had been able to sexually grope women without asking permission first.
Lawyers for E. Jean Carroll rested her civil case against Donald Trump on Thursday, shortly after jurors were shown a deposition video of the former president confusing the accuser with his ex-wife Marla Maples. "It's Marla," Trump said during a deposition for the case when shown a picture of him, Carroll and Carroll's ex-husband in the 1980s. The end of Carroll's case potentially paves the way for the trial to move to closing arguments on Monday. Asked if he was going to the trial, he said, "I'll probably attend," according to a Sky News video of his remarks. In the deposition, Trump also mocked two other women who've accused him of sexual misconduct: Jessica Leeds, a retired stockbroker, and Natasha Stoynoff, a former People magazine reporter.
On Tuesday, Tacopina said the 76-year-old Trump would not testify before the jury in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. Trump has not appeared in that court since the trial began last week. Carroll, 79, alleges that Trump raped her in a dressing room of the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan after a chance encounter with him there. Trump has also said he would not have even had consensual sex with her because she was not his "type." However, during questioning under oath by Carroll's lawyer for his deposition, Trump mistook Carroll for his former wife Marla Maples in a photo that shows Carroll and her then-husband John Johnson with Trump and his then-wife Ivana Trump.
More than 11,000 film and television writers, who say their compensation doesn't match the revenue generated in the streaming era, are on strike for the first time since 2007-08. Most immediately, this will have a significant impact on late-night shows, where writers are tasked with crafting timely and topical jokes. That's because many shows and films have already wrapped production and will enter the marketplace unaffected by the strike. Instead, they feel they've been shortchanged on compensation as studios, networks and streaming platforms write a new rulebook in real time. Unlike the 2007 strike, writers currently have social media on their side and are rallying on platforms like Twitter, Instagram and TikTok to get their message out.
I attended my first rodeo, woke up early for a farmers' market, visited different pickleball venues, and tried other new things. Researchers examined 1,600 conversations (850 hours and 7 million words total) and measured how people reacted to the interactions. Firstly, IRL conversations involve a degree of back-and-forth that is hard to replicate digitally because of lag and missed cues. Elon Musk pays $10,000 to settle a defamation lawsuit. The result is the largest-ever database of one-on-one Zoom conversations. And while the average loudness of speakers didn't change across bad or good conversations, the "good" talkers varied their decibel levels more than the "bad" talkers did. The machine found that women rated as better Zoom conversationalists tended to be more intense. Good conversationalists are those who appear more engaged in what their partners are saying. Studying Zoom calls may help us have better conversations on Zoom.

"I'm here because Trump raped me," Carroll testified. Trump's posts mentioned two issues that Judge Lewis Kaplan had warned parties in the trial not to mention to jurors. Carroll alleges Trump assaulted her in a dressing room at the Bergdorf Goodman department store in Manhattan in or around 1996. In his first Truth Social post on Wednesday, Trump wrote, "The E. Jean Carroll case, Ms. Bergdorf Goodman, is a made up SCAM. "Just look at her CNN interview before & after the commercial break - Like a different person," Trump wrote, referring to an interview Carroll gave CNN about the lawsuit.
