Midyear is a good time to assess investing strategy, looking back at where the markets have been and ahead at prospects for the second half. Looking back at returns over the last six to 12 months will be enjoyable for many people because the stock market, the main engine for most investment portfolios, has performed splendidly. But with American politics in a muddle, any market outlook for the second half of the year is a leap into the unknown. Fortunately, when I put on my investing hat, I try to ignore market forecasts and politics. Academic research suggests that sticking to a long-term plan using broad, low-cost index funds that track the world’s stock and bond markets makes sense for most people, most of the time.

The president noted he overwhelmingly won Democratic primaries, which is why nearly all of the convention delegates are currently considered to be pledged to him. Biden is correct that the Democrats’ rules allow delegates to vote for the candidate of their choice. She told me how the process of replacing Biden would work considering nearly all of the 3,949 pledged convention delegates are currently pledged to support him. Sort of legally, according to party rules, he could be replaced anytime up to the roll call at the convention. Party leaders may yet carry on with the plan as a way to squash questions about Biden.

CNN —Two presidential task forces formed to recommend how Harvard can combat antisemitism and anti-Muslim, anti-Arab and anti-Palestinian activity on campus have spoken: Harvard needs to act now. Harvard needs to do more work to promote diversity education and promote multiple perspectives on campus, the task force chairs recommended. The antisemitism task force sought to get Harvard to clarify its values, act against discrimination and hate, improve the university’s disciplinary process, promote dialogue and training on the topic and support Jewish life on campus. Alan Garber, Harvard’s interim president, said he appreciated the recommendations and the task forces’ candor. And the House Education Committee lambasted the university for its response to a subpoena seeking information on how it handled campus protests.

Many in those industries have begun to refer to their work as "fake email jobs" — office jobs that largely involve sending emails without producing anything. Other people have managed to juggle multiple full-time remote jobs thanks to the limited amount of work each job actually required. Working a useless job is a "profound psychological violence," Graeber wrote, one that removes any sense of dignity and fosters "deep rage and resentment." Short of everyone quitting to become their own CEO, employers will need to figure out how to make work feel meaningful for their staff.
