There's no need to identify the country, all you need to do is control the item," a Japanese industry ministry official told Reuters. Two of them, deposition machinery maker Kokusai Electric and Japan's leading chip tool maker Tokyo Electron (8035.T), said they expect Japan's controls to have a limited business impact. COORDINATIONDovetailing Japan's controls with those of the U.S. and the Netherlands will require close coordination. He has met with Japanese trade officials and believes Tokyo is committed to curbing certain exports. Tokyo remains worried that targeting China will provoke damaging retaliation, such as a ban on Japanese electric cars, a third Japanese industry official said.

ASML to hire 100 researchers leaving Philips
  + stars: | 2023-07-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
AMSTERDAM, July 18 (Reuters) - Dutch semiconductor equipment maker ASML (ASML.AS) will hire 100 researchers who are leaving Philips (PHG.AS), the companies said on Tuesday. ASML was founded as a joint venture between Philips and ASM International (ASMI.AS) in 1984 and has become Europe's largest technology company by market capitalisation. Philips, a former industrial conglomerate that now focuses on medical technology, has been retrenching and cutting staff after a major recall of respiratory devices. The employees switching companies are from Philips' Engineering Solutions division, including staff working on "mechatronics", the integration of mechanical control systems into electronics. ASML hired a net 7,000 employees in 2022, adding almost 20% to its global workforce, but it is expected to slow that pace this year.

AMSTERDAM, July 12 (Reuters) - Smart Photonics, a Dutch company targeting the market for photonic computer chips, said on Wednesday it has received 100 million euros ($110 million) in debt funding. The money includes 60 million euros from a Dutch government fund and 40 million from industry players including chip equipment giant ASML and chipmaker NXP, both based in the Netherlands. Photonic chips use particles of light to complete circuits and transmit information, rather than the electrons used in computer chips and electronics. "With this new round of funding, SMART Photonics will be able to strengthen its role as the leading manufacturer of next generation chips in a growing, resilient European photonic value chain," it said in a statement. Smart Photonics is seeking to become a foundry, or contract manufacturer of photonic chips for companies that design but do not manufacture such chips.

European shares gain ahead of key US inflation data

June 12 (Reuters) - European shares edged higher on Wednesday in the run-up to the release of key U.S. inflation data which will determine whether the Federal Reserve is nearing the end of its monetary policy tightening. The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) was up 0.3% by 7:07 GMT. The U.S. data, scheduled to be released at 1230 GMT, is expected to show the consumer price (CPI) index moderated to 3.1% year-on-year in June after May's 4% rise. A sharp slowdown in inflation could fuel bets that the Fed might end its market-punishing rate hikes after July. Barclays has named several global stocks that are expected to do well as the usage of artificial intelligence-related services evolves. The investment bank acknowledged that hardware and infrastructure giants, most notably Nvidia and Microsoft , are currently seeing the immediate benefits of the AI hype. Still, over the long term, it said businesses in the service sector could cash in significantly. The companies in Barclays' "Global AI Winners" basket include Canada-headquartered Telus and France's Capgemini . The below table highlights non-U.S. stocks in Barclays' basket of AI stocks.

Insurers’ net-zero club looks easy to shun
  + stars: | 2023-07-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
LONDON, July 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Global insurers are looking to re-write the rules to salvage their net-zero club. The once 30-strong U.N.-backed Net-Zero Insurance Alliance (NZIA) unveiled ambitious decarbonisation targets in January, but now has only 12 companies left, including Italy’s Generali (GASI.MI) and Britain’s Aviva (AV.L). As a result, the club may effectively allow insurers to postpone that deadline. But the move may simply raise more questions around NZIA’s raison d’être: insurers may be better off simply publishing their own path to decarbonisation. Europe's biggest IPO prudently tests the water

LONDON, July 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Europe’s biggest listing this year is off to a cautious start. Hidroelectrica, Romania’s top hydropower producer, priced on Wednesday its initial public offering (IPO) at 104 lei ($22.87 per share, the middle of a proposed range, raising 1.8 billion euros. That values the whole utility at 46.8 billion lei, or 9.4 billion euros. And temperatures are expected to soar across large parts of the world, making hydropower plants more vulnerable to droughts. Interest rates are higher and so are prices, credit is drying up and there are signs that the labor market is finally softening. The problem is that no one, not even the Federal Reserve, knows how much longer the American consumer can keep on spending. Personal saving rates soared as a result, with US households amassing about $2.3 trillion in savings in 2020 and through the summer of 2021, according to Federal Reserve economists. Economists know that savings must be dissipating, but haven’t quite figured out just how much of that money is left. Just a few weeks later, economists at the Federal Reserve Board of Governors in Washington said just the opposite.

Supreme Court knocks Fed diversity goal down a peg
  + stars: | 2023-07-05 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
WASHINGTON, July 5 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The U.S. Supreme Court just made the Federal Reserve’s job more difficult. The ruling could make future workforces more homogeneous and, in turn, throws a new obstacle in the way of the Fed’s goal for diverse employment. Getting that back to 2% from the current 4% pace remains the central bank’s “top priority,” Powell said last month. While white unemployment hit 3.3% in May, Black unemployment rebounded to 5.6%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. As Powell moves further away from his goal of inclusivity, the Supreme Court’s decision means closing that gap will probably take even longer.

Such a penalty would be far higher than any previously imposed by Brussels. But China’s stuttering economy and Beijing’s focus on elections in the United States and Taiwan next year are driving a calculation by Chinese policymakers that it is still worth engaging. AMSTERDAM, July 4 (Reuters) - The European Union must respond to new rules introduced by China requiring a license to export two metals widely used in semiconductor manufacturing, the Dutch government said on Tuesday. The Netherlands on Friday introduced new rules requiring a license to export chipmaking equipment made by ASML (ASML.AS), the Netherlands' largest company. "To what extent this will have consequences for the European and Dutch economy will depend on how China carries it out," the Dutch Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "Given the authority that the European Union has in trade policy, it's primarily up to the EU to address China about these measures." The Dutch foreign minister will "keep in close contact with the European Commission and other EU member states about this," the statement said.
