In 2023, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said the company's cybersecurity business had surpassed $20 billion in revenue over a 12-month period. The good news outweighs the bad Seasonality aside, the market is riding a wave of momentum, and with good reason: 1) The market "broadening" trend is very real. At Jackson Hole, chairman Jerome Powell made it clear that the Fed had shifted its attention from fighting inflation to the job market. Most importantly, the Equal-Weight S&P 500 (RSP) modestly outperformed the S&P 500 in August and closed Friday at an historic high.

Many hotel chains are racing to replace the plastic room key with digital options, including Apple Wallet and Google Wallet apps. Plastic hotel key cards have had a rough few years. Cybersecurity and safety issues have prompted many hotel chains to accelerate plans to transform hotel room door locks. Power's research on hotels found that only 14% of total branded hotel guests used digital keys during their hotel stay. "Guests using 'digital key' provide significantly more positive ratings for safety of the hotel compared to those who did not use digital keys," Stokes said.

Brazil's supreme court on Friday ordered a nationwide suspension of Elon Musk's social network X after the company vowed to defy earlier court orders concerning content moderation and the appointment of a legal representative in the country. Hours later, the court issued a second order suspending some of the measures in its first 51-page order against X. A suspension of X in Brazil could cause business problems for Musk's already embattled company. Musk has repeatedly denounced de Moraes' court orders as censorship. In its Thursday statement, X said de Moraes court had taken "illegal actions" against the company.

A federal judge in Texas has ruled against Media Matters and its request to dismiss a lawsuit filed by Elon Musk's X. Because of U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor's decision on Thursday, X's lawsuit against the nonprofit media watchdog and two of its staff members will proceed to trial on April 7. Attorneys representing X claimed the Media Matters report was "intentionally deceptive" and financially damaged the company. Media Matters and X didn't immediately respond to requests for comment. In August, O'Connor dismissed a request by Media Matters to force Musk to list Tesla as an interested party in X's lawsuit against the nonprofit.

Slowing rate of change in earnings growth There are two important trends to follow in earnings. In the case of Nvidia, earnings are continuing to increase, but the rate of change is decelerating. This earnings report will likely be the final time in this stretch that Nvidia will see triple-digit earnings growth. But the impact has been shrinking – just as the overall Mag 7 impact has been diminishing with second quarter earnings growth broadening out. Last season (Q1), Nvidia was responsible for a little more than one-third of the S & P 500's 8% earnings growth.

Wall Street traders think next week's earnings report from Nvidia is likely to give the chip stock another boost, according to one interpretation of options market pricing. A Piper Sandler research note on Thursday from Benson Durham and Melissa Turner said short-term options on Nvidia look expensive, but that high cost is tilted toward options that serve as bets the stock will rise. So, expensive NVDA options in general don't connote very much investor angst heading into the release," the Piper Sandler report said. The market optimism about Nvidia extends beyond the immediate period after the earnings report, according to Piper Sandler. The Piper Sandler researchers did not take a fundamental position on Nvidia's earnings report.

While expectations are high and caution is certainly warranted, we don't think it's quite that simple. While the Oscillator and Williams' work do point to possible selling pressure ahead, we don't want to get too bearish. However, we don't think the risks are so elevated as to warrant more than a small cash raise. We still view Nvidia as an "own it, don't trade it" stock, but we also don't keep our heads in the sand. Despite its cheeky title, Sabrina Carpenter's new album "Short n' Sweet" arrived on Friday with a tall order to fill. Carpenter's sixth album was preceded by smash hits "Espresso" and "Please Please Please," which peaked at No. But "Short n' Sweet" isn't just Carpenter's most anticipated release to date. Researchers first spotted the insect, dubbed the “ManhattAnt,” while doing a survey on ants in New York City in 2011. By comparing the New York ants with the European ones, Seifert was able to confirm the ant’s identity. Because the nests work together instead of against one another, they can spread faster and easily dominate an area by outcompeting native species, he added. “One of the things we know about a lot of invasive ant species is they displace the native species, and the native species that they’re displacing usually have very specialized roles in the ecosystem, so you’re sort of disrupting that ecosystem when these species get introduced,” Moreau said. Time will tell whether the ant has become more than just a nuisance and is disrupting the ecosystem, Penick said.
