Washington, DC CNN —Americans are living through the toughest housing market in a generation and, for some young people, the quintessential dream of owning a home is slipping away. Mortgage rates surged in recent years, hitting the highest levels in more than two decades last fall. CNN spoke with some young Americans about their thoughts on the current state of the US housing market and their plans for the future. “The housing market is not a single person’s market.”What typically happens when a regional housing market becomes too unaffordable is that people without the means simply move somewhere cheaper, such as a suburb an hour away, for example. Still, affordability takes into account mortgage rates, family incomes and single-family home prices, which remain a vexing pain point.

That’s because a state law requires Nevada to hold a primary election, but the Nevada GOP voted to hold their own caucuses, or party-run meetings open to Republicans only. Nevada voters have received mail ballots for the Feb. 6 primary that don’t list front-runner Donald Trump’s name. Three Nevada GOP leaders overseeing the caucuses have been indicted on felony charges that they were so-called fake electors who sent certificates to Congress falsely claiming Trump won Nevada in 2020. Still, Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald has forged ahead with the caucuses. Trump himself told the crowd at the January rally to ignore the primary and attend the caucuses instead, saying “Your primary vote doesn’t mean anything.”A Nevada GOP rule states that any candidate who participates in the state-run primary may not run in the caucuses.

Meta whistleblower Frances Haugen felt co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg's testimony before Congress was "powerful" on Wednesday — especially when he turned to apologize directly to families who blamed the toxicity of social media for the loss of a loved one. "That apology, I think, is a turning point because it's the first time he's actually had to visibly face the consequences of his choices," Haugen said on CNBC's Last Call. The hearing regarding child safety on social media featured several prominent tech CEOs from Discord, Snap , TikTok, and X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Haugen, the former Facebook product manager turned whistleblower who leaked a trove of internal documents to the Wall Street Journal in 2021, said the apology was amplified by the many families in attendance. Many of the internal documents Haugen leaked detailed the company's knowledge of the potentially harmful impact social media platforms Facebook and Instagram may have on underage users.

Neuralink reposted Musk's Monday post on X, but did not publish any additional statements acknowledging the human implant. In its September announcement, Neuralink said the wires would be surgically placed in a region of the brain that controls movement intention. There are more than 40 brain computer interface trials underway, according to clinicaltrials.gov.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A Minnesota state trooper accused in the fatal shooting of motorist Ricky Cobb II can remain free without bail while awaiting trial, a judge ruled Monday during a brief court hearing. Trooper Ryan Londregan must surrender his passport and avoid contact with witnesses and Cobb's relatives, the judge ruled. Seide told Cobb he was under arrest while Londregan reached inside, unlocked the doors and began opening the passenger door. The complaint said Cobb’s car began to slowly move forward. “This is an extremely undemocratic way to harm access to reproductive health care," said Sofia Tomov, operations coordinator with Access Reproductive Care Southeast, a member of the Mississippi Abortion Access Coalition. The proposal comes days after a Missouri abortion-rights campaign launched its ballot measure effort aiming to enshrine abortion rights into the state constitution. Missouri abortion rights groups also have criticized Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, saying he is attempting to impede the initiative by manipulating the measure's ballot summary. Ohio abortion rights advocates have said last year’s statewide vote to enshrine abortion rights in the state constitution was as much about abortion as it was a referendum on democracy itself. After Ohio voters approved the abortion protections last year, Republican lawmakers pledged to block the amendment from reversing the state's restrictions.

The answer explains why Congress is racing to wind down what is known as the employee retention tax credit. Lawmakers aim to use the savings to offset the cost of three business tax breaks and a more generous child tax credit for many low-income families. Households benefitting from the changes in the child tax credit would see an average tax cut of $680 in the first year, according to an estimate from the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center. Under current law, taxpayers have until April 15, 2025, to claim the employee retention credit. But in this case, the employee retention tax credit appears to have few friends left on Capitol Hill.
