Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller on Monday signaled that future interest rate cuts will be less aggressive than the big move in September as he expressed concern that the economy could still be running at a hotter-than-desired pace. The Federal Open Market Committee at its September meeting took the unusual step of lowering its baseline interest rate by a half percentage point, or 50 basis points, to a target range of 4.75%-5.0%. Along with the cut, officials indicated the likelihood of another half point lopped off in the final two meetings of 2024, along with another full percentage point of cuts in 2025. In the final revision for second-quarter growth, the Commerce Department also punched up the level of gross domestic income gain to 3.4%, an adjustment of 2.1 percentage points from the previous estimate and closer in line with GDP. “These revisions suggest that the economy is much stronger than previously thought, with little indication of a major slowdown in economic activity,” Waller said.

Macao's next leader wants to wean economy off gambling

Slated to become the next leader of Macao, Sam Hou Fai wants to steer China's special administrative region further away from its heavy reliance on gaming and gambling. Formerly Macao's top judge, Sam was elected Macao's next leader in an uncontested vote on Sunday. In the lead-up to his selection, the 62-year-old identified the diversification of Macao as an urgent issue to address. He added he would consider creating public funds to promote the development of emerging industries outside gaming and gambling. However, that reliance backfired during the Covid-19 pandemic when the gambling and gaming industries took major hits from border closures and social distancing policies.

"The risks to Singapore's inflation outlook are more balanced compared to three months ago," MAS said in a statement, adding that growth momentum has picked up. The Monetary Authority of Singapore said it will maintain the prevailing rate of appreciation of its exchange rate-based policy band known as the Nominal Effective Exchange Rate, or S$NEER. Capital Economics markets economist Shivaan Tandon concurred, saying "the risk of keeping monetary policy too tight for too long will take center stage soon prompting the central bank to pivot". Singapore is often seen as a bellwether for global growth as its international trade dwarfs its domestic economy. As a heavily trade-reliant economy, Singapore uses a unique method of managing monetary policy, tweaking the exchange rate of its dollar against a basket of currencies instead of domestic interest rates like most other countries.

But mortgage rates are expected to go down next year, so it could be worth waiting if you aren't in a rush. 5-Year Mortgage Rate TrendsHere's how 30-year and 15-year mortgage rates have trended over the last five years, according to Freddie Mac data. Mortgage rates are determined by a variety of different factors, including larger economic trends, Federal Reserve policy, your state's current mortgage rates, the type of loan you're getting, and your personal financial profile. But now that inflation has decelerated and the Fed is expected to cut rates soon, mortgage rates have trended down. This means your entire monthly mortgage payment, including taxes and insurance, shouldn't exceed 28% of your pre-tax monthly income.

Trump's proposed tax break would make interest on car loans fully tax deductible. That tax break lets homeowners deduct annual mortgage interest payments from their taxable income, thereby reducing their tax bill. Few taxpayers claim itemized tax deductionsTo get the deduction, car owners would need to itemize their tax return to include their borrowing costs. About 14.8 million federal tax returns, or about 9%, claimed an itemized deduction on their 2021 federal tax returns, according to the most recent IRS data. An itemized tax break on car loan interest "would help only a fraction of taxpayers," said Leonard Burman, an institute fellow at the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center.

watch nowFrance's newly-installed government on Thursday presented a draft budget containing 60 billion euros ($65.6 billion) in tax hikes and spending cuts, as analysts warned the package may not be enough to stave off ratings downgrades for the economy. The 2025 budget features a greater focus on tax-raising measures than some were expecting. "The problem is when you have to find 60 billion, we have never found 60 billion in one year, it would be unprecedented, and that's why it's not very credible to find so huge an amount, especially with only a very fragile relative majority." Tax focusThe policy mix underpinning the 2025 budget is "less skewed towards spending cuts and more geared towards tax increases than we anticipated," analysts at Goldman Sachs said in a note Friday. AMD launched a new artificial-intelligence chip on Thursday that is taking direct aim at Nvidia’s data center graphics processors, known as GPUs. In the past few years, Nvidia has dominated the majority of the data center GPU market, but AMD is historically in second place. The new AI chip is the successor to the MI300X, which started shipping late last year. Most industry estimates say Nvidia has over 90% of the market for data center AI chips. The new CPUs are particularly good for feeding data into AI workloads, AMD said.

In 2023, the fund returned 30.7%, significantly outperforming its benchmark and the S & P 500, which was up 26%. Yiu's decision stems from his belief that Microsoft's business model is about to change significantly in light of the rise of generative AI. Microsoft has been leading the charge in generative AI adoption. The crux of the issue lies in the increased costs associated with providing AI services, according to the outperforming fund manager. Nvidia's chips, while readily available, allows the Silicon Valley company to capture much of the profit from generative AI services instead.
