CNN —A squat, light-colored building in Tigard, Oregon, was supposed to be part of a game-changing new solution for the global plastics industry. And unlike mechanical recycling, where the quality of the product declines each time, chemical recycling promises virgin-quality plastics. Chemical company Dow says it plans to build multiple chemical recycling facilities in the US and Europe, adding as much as 600,000 tons (1.2 billion pounds) of recycling capacity by 2030. “Mechanical recycling simply uses less energy and chemicals than does chemical recycling, making it overall cheaper and less environmentally impactful,” she said. With that kind of industry pressure, said Congdon, it’s easy to see why chemical recycling may be attractive to policymakers.

Eyes being on Rafah has not stopped the violence, wrote scientist Ayesha Khan on Instagram. The phrase “All Eyes on Rafah” has been appearing in various graphics and images associated with the war in Gaza for months and is not necessarily tied to this specific viral image. “Because you’re directing everyone’s gaze to an image that doesn’t really show the horror of what happens in conflict zones.”What does ‘All Eyes on Rafah’ mean? Others have pointed out that the image does not actually include the words “Palestine” or “Gaza” — names that have been widely politicized even before October 7. “Rafah does not have the immediate name recognition for people who haven’t been paying attention,” said writer Heben Nigatu on X.

CNN —It’s becoming tougher and tougher for Americans to carry on with their spending spree. Years of elevated inflation and the highest interest rates in almost a quarter century are wearing out the US consumer. Savings accumulated during the Covid-19 pandemic are drying up, borrowers continue to rack up debt and delinquencies are marching higher. A second estimate of gross domestic product, released Thursday, showed that consumer spending was weaker in the first three months of the year than initially reported. Economists polled by FactSet are expecting data to be released Friday to show that consumer spending slowed notably in April from March.

Last summer, a book changed Kohn Glay’s life. He ordered a copy, and soon was back on TikTok, fervently recommending it to his followers. “If you’re on your spiritual journey, you absolutely need to go and get you one of these,” he says in the video, urging viewers to buy the book in the TikTok store. Glay, who is 43 and lives in Baltimore, began holding online classes to guide people through the journal. Over the next few months, people who watched his videos bought more than 40,000 copies of the book on TikTok, and Glay earned more than $150,000 in commissions.

And it’s a style that Melinda French Gates appears to be emulating, at least partly, in her newly solo philanthropic venture. Now independent of that organization, French Gates is free to take bets on organizations and communities regardless of their size or ability to demonstrate their impact. CNN —When you’re trying to address mental health symptoms, simply the belief that you can be helped may be an important factor. Symptoms of nine mental health disorders substantially improved under placebo treatment, according to a new review of 90 randomized controlled trials — known as a meta-analysis — totaling 9,985 adult participants largely in their 30s and 40s. “This is the most comprehensive study of placebo effects in psychiatry.”The results are also important for patient treatment, Bschor said. But for disorders that didn’t see as much improvement with placebos — such as OCD or schizophrenia, which is a psychotic disorder — medication may be more necessary. Improvement in absence of medicationThat mental health symptoms improved with placebo treatment may be due to a few potential influences, experts said.

CNN —Rivers and streams in Alaska are changing color – from a clean, clear blue to a rusty orange – because of the toxic metals released by thawing permafrost, according to a new study. Ken Hill/National Park ServiceArctic soils naturally contain organic carbon, nutrients and metals, such as mercury, within their permafrost, the study says. “It’s really an unexpected consequence of climate change.”Researchers used satellite imagery to determine when the change in color happened at different rivers and streams. In Alaska’s Arctic rivers alone reside a variety of fish that are “critical for subsistence, sport, and commercial fisheries,” researchers wrote. Poulin said local communities voiced their concerns and observations to study researchers beginning seven years ago.

That’s not too surprising coming from Nicholls, whose 2009 novel “One Day” explored many of the same themes. It was the most enjoyable writing experience I’ve had for a long time. New York CNN —Bifurcation is the word of the summer. Or it’s the word of the summer among investors, at least. It’s a word that the market gets hung up on and then all you do is hear that word. But I think that’s nearing an end, and so I would expect a slowdown in consumer spending. I’m not so sure that’s going to happen this time because their balance sheets and cash flows aren’t as strong.

Opinion | Do We Still Understand How Wars Are Won?

In the past 50 years, the United States has gotten good at losing wars. We won limited victories against Saddam Hussein in 1991 and Muammar el-Qaddafi in 2011, only to fumble the endgames. If you’re on the left, you’d probably say that most if not all these wars were unnecessary, unwinnable or unworthy. Life in America would not have materially changed if, say, Kosovo were still a part of Serbia. We know how America fought such wars.

In fact, over the course of a pregnancy, creating and carrying a little one takes 49,753 dietary calories — the equivalent of 164 Snickers candy bars, said Dr. Dustin Marshall, a coauthor of the study published May 16 in the journal Science. Elijah Orlandi knows what many New Yorkers think about delivery workers on e-bikes: They ride too fast. They zigzag in and out of traffic and bike lanes — sometimes going the wrong direction altogether. He has seen e-bike riders “swerving in between cars and all that kind of stuff.”But Orlandi is also hoping for compassion. Delivery apps, he noted, keep track of how quickly workers make their drop-offs — and ding them if they take too long. “Sometimes you’ll be going somewhere and Grubhub will send you another order, and then no matter what you do, you’re going to be late,” he said.

Donald J. Trump is crystal clear about his disdain for electric vehicles. The former president has falsely claimed electric cars don’t work, promised to shred President Biden’s policies that encourage E.V. manufacturing and sales, and has said he would slap a “100 percent tariff” on electric cars imported from Mexico if he retakes the White House. But analysts say that even if Mr. Trump is elected and ends federal policies that support electric vehicles, by the time that happens, the market may have reached a level where it would keep growing without government help. A record 1.2 million Americans bought electric vehicles last year, making up 7.6 percent of new car sales and moving the cars and trucks from the margin to the mainstream of the American auto market.
