Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Nevada, Georgia and North Carolina ended up consuming the campaign’s most precious resources: time and money. Hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of ads blanketed the airwaves in the battlegrounds as Harris and Trump held large-scale, competing rallies. On the eve of the election, Harris and Trump raced to those swing states making their final pitches, each focusing heavily on Pennsylvania, the biggest electoral prize of those states. The Harris campaign, flush with money, has deployed a massive ground game in the battleground states that aims to deliver its voters to the polls. “President Donald J. Trump is going into Election Day stronger than he has in any previous election and if patriots across the country keep the momentum and turn out as expected on Election Day, we will be swearing in President Trump in January,” Tim Saler, a data consultant for Trump and the Republican National Committee, said in a statement.

CNN —Democrats are mounting an unprecedented digital advertising campaign in the closing weeks of the presidential race, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars into a targeted effort that the party hopes will tip the balance in one of the closest elections in US history. The effort is being steered by Future Forward PAC, or FF PAC, the largest single-candidate super PAC in the 2024 election. The 2024 election is poised to break the record set by the 2020 election and see $10.2 billion worth of campaign advertising, according to the ad tracking firm AdImpact. The SPDR S & P Regional Banking ETF (KRE) has jumped nearly 5% since the fourth quarter began on Oct. 1, while the S & P 500 is ahead a little more than 1%. In the event of a Trump win but with a divided Congress, the S & P 500 is likely to remain flat in the days following the election, Emanuel wrote. Evercore ISI expects the S & P 500 falling in the 10 days after the election, to roughly 5,700, as markets re-price their expectations. 3Fourteen Research co-founder Pies expects a Harris win would translate into a drop in cyclical and small-cap stocks, and spur investors to turn to high-quality tech names. However, a Harris win, with a split Congress, is an outcome that could spur a drop in the S & P 500 immediately after the election, down to about 5,525, according to Evercore ISI.

With Election Day around the corner, some households are finding that the best way to cope with political differences is humor. On TikTok, dozens of users are posting tongue-in-cheek videos about how their vote will “cancel out” someone else’s on the opposite end of the political spectrum — including their parents, friends and partners. About a quarter of those who plan to vote for Trump said their friendship would be strained if a friend planned to vote for Harris. Some who participated in the trend said it was a fun way to alleviate tension ahead of a stressful election. “It wasn’t a surprise to me that my husband was going to vote for Harris and Walz.

In today’s edition, we break down our latest poll showing how Gen Z voters are viewing the presidential race in the final days. And among young voters who say they will vote in the presidential election in November, Harris leads 56%-36%, a 20-point advantage. Within Gen Z, though, there are notable divisions among different groups — and the gender gap is particularly significant. Much of the office market may be mired in a downturn, but demand has been strong for high-end space. New office construction has dropped off sharply, leading to a potential upcoming shortage. That demand has persisted even as office construction has been stifled by higher interest rates and inflation, which have pushed up costs. Worries over the health of the office market have also made lenders reluctant to finance new development. 8 million square feet of that is pre-leased, meaning that there is only about 10 million square feet of upcoming available top quality space.

CNN —Ukraine’s electricity supply risks “severe disruptions” this winter, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned, urging Kyiv’s allies to help address the country’s energy security. Russia has repeatedly attacked Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with missiles and drones since its full-scale invasion in February 2022, but its bombardments have intensified recently, leaving the country in a precarious position as colder weather approaches. Ukraine has also attacked Russia’s energy infrastructure. In its report, the agency outlines 10 measures that Ukraine and its allies should implement to tackle risks to the country’s energy supply. She also noted that the EU had contributed at least €2 billion ($2.2 billion) toward Ukraine’s energy system since Russia’s full-scale invasion began.

As my colleague Thomas Edsall noted in May, in recent years there’s also a yawning gender gap among young voters, with young women becoming increasingly Democratic and young men becoming increasingly Republican. Edsall quoted the Democratic pollster Celinda Lake, who cites Donald Trump’s “chaotic and divisive style” and lack of respect, among the reasons that young women have been fleeing the G.O.P. Young women, Lake said, “want stability and are very concerned about division and the potential for violence.”All this data was collected when Joe Biden was on course to be the Democratic presidential nominee.

For years, China ramped up green energy production capacity, becoming the global leader in renewable energy manufacturing, from solar to wind to battery. In a second Trump administration, prices for imports from China are likely to surge for green energy producers. The view is that First Solar will benefit the most within the U.S. solar sector from greater trade restrictions, according to Baird. Ultimately, that may curtail the number of green energy startups and private companies that want to go public, Schleif said. "It's been really hard to compete with Chinese companies in any way, shape or form."

Add to that the noise surrounding the US election, and it could be a rougher second half. Central Banks in Canada and the eurozone have both cut interest rates, but inflation rose in both of those regions last month. Australia, meanwhile, saw its inflation rate rise to 4% this week, stoking fears that the Reserve Bank of Australia could soon move to raise rates again. As Democrats make their case to voters around the country this fall, one challenge is that some of the bluest parts of the country — cities on the West Coast — are a mess. Centrist voters can reasonably ask: Why put liberals in charge nationally when the places where they have greatest control are plagued by homelessness, crime and dysfunction? I’m an Oregonian who bores people at cocktail parties by singing the praises of the West, but the truth is that too often we offer a version of progressivism that doesn’t result in progress. We are more likely to believe that “housing is a human right” than conservatives in Florida or Texas, but less likely to actually get people housed. We accept a yawning gulf between our values and our outcomes.

For the third year in a row, the vast majority – 66% — say companies are doing a “poor” job here. Politically, the majority of Democrats (96%), independents (83%) and Republicans (67%) agree that it’s important to avoid major pay gaps. The findings show how the issue of CEO pay strikes a chord among many Americans, some of whom are struggling to make ends meet in an increasingly expensive world.

Former President Donald J. Trump and the Republican National Committee collected a combined $141 million in May, campaign officials said on Monday, an enormous haul fueled in part by his criminal conviction last week. That sum should help Mr. Trump continue his quest to close his yawning financial gap with President Biden and his own allied groups. The $141 million figure matches what Mr. Biden and the Democratic Party raised in March and April combined. The fund-raising was powered by what Lara Trump, the Republican National Committee co-chairwoman and the former president’s daughter-in-law, said on Sunday was $70 million raised by Mr. Trump and the R.N.C. in the 48 hours after Mr. Trump’s conviction.

FCC is considering AI rules for political ads
  + stars: | 2024-05-22 | by ( Brian Fung | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +3 min
Washington CNN —The Federal Communications Commission is taking initial steps toward new rules that could require political ads on TV and radio to include disclaimers about the use of artificial intelligence. Under the proposed rules, political advertisers on those mediums would have to make on-air disclosures if their ads contain AI-generated content. The FCC move seeks to fill a yawning gap in the regulation of artificial intelligence in political advertising. In March, a bipartisan proposal by Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Alaska Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski unveiled the AI Transparency in Elections Act, which could require AI disclaimers on political ads. Online platforms such as Meta have taken their own steps to address AI in political ads, requiring campaigns to disclose the use of deepfakes and banning the use of its in-house generative AI tools for political advertising.

London CNN —The chorus of voices warning about the dangers of record US government debt is growing louder. In the past 24 hours, JPMorgan (JPM) CEO Jamie Dimon and Ray Dalio, founder of the world’s biggest hedge fund, have weighed in with concerns about America’s debt pile. Ray Dalio, the billionaire founder of Bridgewater Associates, during a Bloomberg Television interview in New York in April 2024. Dimon acknowledged that debt-fueled government spending, including pandemic stimulus, had been one of the reasons behind robust growth in the world’s biggest economy.
