Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy's new golf league, TGL, is getting some fresh star power representing the Big Apple. Cohen Private Ventures, the family office of Steve Cohen, announced on Thursday that Eli Manning, Derek Jeter, CC Sabathia, Michael Strahan, John McEnroe and Jimmy Fallon are joining the New York Golf Club's investor group as limited partners. Cohen, who also owns Major League Baseball's New York Mets, acquired the rights to the New York Golf team last September. TGL is the new primetime, high-tech golf league launched by Woods, McIlroy and Golf Channel executive Mike McCarley. Former New York Yankees star Jeter told CNBC he was drawn to the investment opportunity because it combines his passion for golf and his love of New York.

CNN —TGL, the high-tech indoor golf league spearheaded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, is set to tee off at last on January 7, 2025, after a schedule was released Monday. The January 7 curtain-raiser sees New York Golf Club, headlined by two-time major champion Xander Schauffele, take on The Bay Golf Club. 3 McIlroy will first be in action on matchday four when his Boston Common Golf side competes against Woods’ team. Norway’s Viktor Hovland and American LIV Golf star Bryson DeChambeau are the other two members of the top-10 not present in the league. Spain’s Jon Rahm had been slated to compete but withdrew last November, and the following month joined LIV Golf – none of whom’s players feature in TGL.

CNN —The San Diego Padres hit a record-tying six home runs Sunday night to smash the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-2 in a Major League Baseball playoff game marred by fans in Dodger Stadium throwing what appeared to be baseballs, and then trash, at Padres players. With the Padres up 4-1 at the time, fans threw baseballs at Padres left-fielder Jurickson Profar while he was warming up in the outfield. As Padres manager Mike Shildt and players met with umpires, fans started throwing trash onto the outfield grass by Tatis in right field. The Olympic men’s golf competition was in the hands of Jon Rahm. In the battle for bronze, Japan’s Hideki Matsuayama shot a final-round 65 to finish at 17-under-par, two shots behind Scheffler and one behind Fleetwood. Scheffler has won seven of his last 11 outings, all coming in majors or signature events with limited fields. The biggest winner this week was perhaps golf as an Olympic sport. On Thursday, Biles and Lee will both return to Bercy Arena eyeing an individual medal in the event. Biles, the 2016 all-around gold medalist in Rio de Janeiro, led the U.S. women to their first team gold since Brazil on Tuesday. She led the individual all-around competition after qualifying and enters as a heavy favorite to capture her sixth gold medal. McIntosh, 17, won her first Olympic gold medal Monday in the grueling women’s 400-meter individual medley. Marchand, 22, has won gold in all three of his events in Paris, with the 200-meter individual medley remaining.

On Sunday, the American clinched the Open Championship to claim the second major of his career. South Africa’s Thriston Lawrence finished one shot behind Rose and Horschel in tied-fourth, with American Russell Henley a further stroke back. Yet the attacks were coming from all angles now, the most ferocious of all from playing partner Lawrence and Schauffele, two holes ahead. The ever-steady 30-year-old star never topped the Open leaderboard Thursday to Saturday, always quietly lurking in the top 10 before shooting a Sunday 65 to win the 152nd Open Championship for his second major title in three starts.
