Jon Husted is the leading candidate to replace Vice President-elect JD Vance in the US Senate, according to two Republican sources familiar with the deliberations. The two Republican sources stressed, however, that it’s not clear whether Husted would accept the appointment, as he has eyed the Ohio governor’s mansion for years. In the 2018 election cycle, Husted ran for governor against DeWine before dropping out to become DeWine’s running mate. But those same Republicans noted that an appointment to a Senate seat — which would initially spare him a contested primary — could make the job more appealing. Husted’s rising stock comes after other names, including state Rep. Jay Edwards and former Ohio Republican Party Chair Jane Timken, emerged as possibilities in recent weeks.

Jon Husted has emerged as a late and leading contender to succeed Vice President-elect JD Vance in the Senate, three Republicans familiar with the process said Friday. Mike DeWine will appoint a replacement once Vance resigns his Senate seat — something that must happen before Vance and President-elect Donald Trump take office Jan. 20. Husted, 57, has long held ambitions of being governor and has passed on running for Senate in previous elections. DeWine has said he wants his pick for Vance’s Senate seat to be someone who can win a competitive primary — a dynamic that makes Trump’s blessing key. Last year, the governor endorsed against Trump-backed Bernie Moreno in the primary for Ohio’s other Senate seat.

The practice of making New Year’s resolutions may be done with optimistic intent. The ancient city of Babylon was located in what’s now Iraq, roughly 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) south of Baghdad. “Like many ancient New Year’s festivals, (Akitu) lauded creation and fertility on both an agricultural and cosmic scale,” Moss said. “In 1893,” McKenzie said, “Yenowine’s Illustrated News out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, published a list of citizens’ ‘Resolutions,’ many of which seem to be lightly satirical: ‘Frank A Lappen: To steer clear of Milwaukee during the whole of 1894.’”New Year’s resolutions were a firm tradition by the 20th century, McKenzie said. At this point, the tradition had also moved beyond religious contexts, reflecting the beginnings of the broader secularization of society, Moss said.

The search for Vice President-elect JD Vance’s successor in the Senate is reinforcing a rift among Ohio Republicans, whose loyalties are divided between the establishment-friendly Gov. Vance has consulted with DeWine on the Senate appointment, two sources familiar with the discussions said. When asked if Trump’s Cabinet picks were a part of DeWine’s considerations, Tierney emphasized the governor’s wish that his pick be able to win the GOP primary that year. Moreno, for his part, singled out Gaetz, Gabbard, Hegseth and Kennedy this week in a statement pledging to support Trump’s Cabinet choices. “The American people delivered President Trump a mandate, and it is crucial that Senate Republicans confirm his nominees quickly,” he said.

Then came the endorsement from DeWine, who had previously suggested he wouldn’t get involved in the Senate primary. “Everyone loves Mike DeWine, but that’s not where the party is right now,” said Ohio Republican consultant Bob Kish, who’s not working for any of the candidates. Mike DeWine of Ohio parted ways with Donald Trump on Monday and endorsed state Sen. Matt Dolan over Trump-backed businessman Bernie Moreno in the state's three-way GOP primary for a U.S. Senate seat. In breaking ranks with the former president, DeWine called Dolan the party's best shot at defeating Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in November. Ohio’s state GOP was the first in the nation to endorse Trump for president this year. Only about two weeks ago, DeWine told reporters he didn’t plan any endorsement in the GOP primary, which also features Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose, his fellow state officeholder. Moreno campaigned Monday throughout central Ohio with Trump-backed South Dakota Gov.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio has banned gender-affirming care for minors and restricted transgender women’s and girls’ participation on sports teams, a move that has families of transgender children scrambling over how best to care for them. The new law bans gender-affirming surgeries and hormone therapies, and restricts mental health care for transgender individuals under 18. The measure also bans transgender girls and women from girls and women’s sports teams at both the K-12 and collegiate level. One advocate, while singing that Jesus loves transgender children, was escorted out of the Senate chamber. At least 23 states have now enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and many of those states face lawsuits.

Mike DeWine’s veto of a bill that would bar transgender minors from receiving puberty blockers, hormone therapy or gender transition surgery. The move by the Republican-controlled state legislature comes less than four weeks after the Republican governor’s veto. For Ohio residents, that means that only transgender minors who have already begun transition care treatments will be able to receive them. Last year, at least 20 states, all with Republican-controlled legislatures, passed bans or restrictions on gender transition care for young people. Before 2023, only three states had passed restrictions on gender transition medical care for minors, according to a New York Times analysis.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Restrictions on medical care for transgender minors are up for debate in the South Carolina House on Wednesday, as a slew of like-minded proposals receive discussion in a Missouri legislative committee. The measures' consideration highlights the continued interest among conservative lawmakers in targeting issues impacting transgender residents after last year's wave of high-profile bills. South Carolina is one of the few Southern states without a ban on gender-affirming care for minors. At least 22 states have enacted laws restricting or banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors, and many of those states face lawsuits. CNN —Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was arrested at Entebbe International Airport near the capital Kampala on Thursday as he returned to the country, according to his party the National Unity Platform. The National Unity Platform (NUP) said in a social media post that Wine was “violently arrested upon his return to Uganda. “I feel like it’s totally underutilized,” she said about the fruity, moderately spiced pepper, named for a commune in France and prevalent in Basque cooking. When it comes to the piment d’Espelette, which turbocharges the flavor and pinkish color of this shrimp, you don’t have to pluck it from a Basque field. Be sure not to skip the orange zest, though; it brings out the Provençal wine’s inherent fruitiness. This last addition was a gift from another friend and colleague, Melissa Clark. Zested over the shrimp, the bittersweet orange lent balance and made the buttery sauce taste all the better.

But the friend kept calling, and eventually she relented, flew to Portland and drove to a hillside in Amity. In 2019, she began offering an annual seminar for wine professionals that she named Beauty School. In her pursuit of maximally beautiful wines, Harrison has devised possibly the world’s most laborious way of making them. This blending period is when Harrison’s wines find their identities. “Though they can be punishingly difficult,” Ready told me, “those blending sessions are about trusting yourself, believing in the process and letting go of the desire to second guess.”Punishingly difficult seems to be Harrison’s thing.

But it also gave the fine wine and crypto industry a big boost as panicking investors rushed out of the financial sector and into alternative assets. Bittersweet banking: SVB lent over $4 billion to winery clients since 1994, with over 400 wine industry clients (including wineries, vineyards and vendors) working with the bank’s premium wine division, according to the bank’s website. Recent SEC filings, meanwhile, indicated SVB had about $1.2 billion in outstanding loans to high-end wine clients when the bank collapsed. Circle, the company behind popular stablecoin USDC, said it had about $3.3 billion of its $40 billion in reserves at SVB. The collapse of Signature Bank, a major crypto lender, also had serious implications for the industry.
New York CNN —Norfolk Southern CEO Alan Shaw returns to Capitol Hill Wednesday facing pressure to support rail safety legislation proposed in the wake of his railroad’s massive toxic spill from a February 3 derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. “We support legislative efforts to enhance the safety of the freight rail industry,” was the only discussion of the legislation in his prepared remarks. Shaw said the railroad would support increasing fines and penalties for people found tampering with railroad facilities and safety equipment, without endorsing proposals for potential fines on railroads found guilty of safety violations. They said residents who live near freight rail tracks can’t depend on the railroad’s voluntary measures to improve safety. Vance said it is important to raise the maximum fine for rail safety violations from the current limit of $225,455.
Mike DeWine told residents in an eastern Ohio village living within a mile of a train derailment to stay away from their homes, because of the possibility that a tanker car could explode. Mr. DeWine’s warning Sunday night was the latest for residents of East Palestine, a village of nearly 5,000 people on the border with Pennsylvania, after 50 cars of a Norfolk Southern Corp. train derailed Friday at about 9 p.m., causing a chemical fire, which continued to smolder Monday morning.
Speaking to reporters this week, Brown reaffirmed that he intends to seek a fourth term. Jai Chabria, Vance’s chief campaign strategist, said he expects the “floodgates to open” with candidates eager to take on Brown. Dolan’s pitch to county chairs this week leaned into frustrations that Republicans have vented toward Trump after disappointing midterm results. For Brown, this year’s midterm elections in Ohio have yielded a more unpleasant set of questions than the last. “He is a different beast than Tim Ryan, because Tim Ryan was a Xerox of a Xerox of Sherrod Brown,” Chabria said.
COLUMBUS, Ohio — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine has secured a second term, NBC News projects, defeating Democratic challenger Nan Whaley, the former mayor of Dayton. The crowd that had begun gathering here at a Columbus hotel for an Ohio GOP watch party including DeWine and Senate candidate J.D. "We all know what happened here in Ohio," Bob Paduchik, the Ohio GOP chair, told the audience after DeWine's win was called. Trump, at an election eve rally Monday for Vance and other Ohio Republicans, called DeWine to the stage.
