Red flag warnings are in place for Southern California due to Santa Ana winds that will bring gusts up to 65 mph and “extremely rare and dangerous” fire weather conditions. Meanwhile, a "particularly dangerous situation" red flag warning is also in place from 10 p.m. Monday through 2 p.m. Tuesday in those same areas due to Santa Ana winds, low humidity and extremely dry vegetation. Under the PDS red flag warning, damaging wind gusts of 60 to 80 mph will be likely along with single digit humidities across windier mountains and foothills. Santa Ana winds are forecast to increase late Monday morning into the afternoon and peak Monday night into Tuesday, the NWS said. It’s expected be a long duration red flag event due to the “strong likelihood of widespread single digit humidities,” the Sunday evening advisory said.

The high sea surface temperatures that helped both storms intensify were 200 to 500 times more likely because of climate change, the report found. As Hurricane Milton barrels toward Florida’s west coast, a new report estimates how much more intense Hurricane Helene’s winds and rain were because of climate change. The sea surface temperatures that propelled Helene and Milton were 200 to 500 times more likely because of climate change, the report found. They found that coastal rainfall totals that high were 40% more likely because of climate change and that inland totals that high were 70% more likely because of climate change. Read previewIt has been nearly eight years since my three Welsh children have visited my family in the United States. Bigger cars and bigger roadsAfter landing in Washington, DC, and retrieving our bags, we entered the parking lot. The two older kids quickly observed that the cars weren't like the ones in the UK. My kids immediately noticed that, along with cars, the roads in the US are much bigger than in the UK. "All the food is big," one of them whispered to me as he gazed at the shelves of food.

Sonia Nicolson moved to Iceland "for love" in February 2016 after meeting her husband in a bar in Scotland while working at a university in southern England. Deciding whether to live as a couple was a case of "either him coming to the UK or me coming to Iceland," Nicolson said. "I was absolutely exhausted in my career, had worked, worked, worked, worked, worked, traveled a huge amount, and jet lag had never really caught up with me," Nicolson said. She first visited Iceland on a work trip and later spent a month exploring the island in 2015. Though you have to pay for healthcare in Iceland, it's affordable and easy to get same-day doctors' appointments, Nicolson said.

Hurricanes are now also more likely to strengthen rapidly off the U.S. East Coast and in the Caribbean Sea, but slower to gain steam in the Gulf of Mexico. "It's become more common for storms to intensify near the U.S. East Coast," said study author Andra Garner, a meteorologist at Rowan University in the United States. "Those areas do need to be thinking about how they prepare for the possibility of having storms strengthen especially quickly in their region." Four of the five costliest Atlantic hurricanes have occurred since 2017. The research, which analyzed wind speed changes over the lifespan of Atlantic hurricanes in a national database, notes the rapid intensification of these storms is likely due to warmer ocean temperatures.

IS CLIMATE CHANGE AFFECTING HURRICANES? Yes, climate change is making hurricanes wetter, windier and altogether more intense. If it were not for the oceans, the planet would be much hotter due to climate change. Climate change can also boost the amount of rainfall delivered by a storm. It is unclear, however, if climate change is affecting the number of hurricanes that form each year.

MANILA, July 26 (Reuters) - Strong winds and rain lashed the northern Philippines as Typhoon Doksuri made landfall on Wednesday, causing rivers to overflow and leaving thousands without power. "We are being battered here," Manual Mamba, governor of northern Cagayan province told Reuters, adding that no casualties had been reported so far. Storm warnings are in place in many parts of the northern island of Luzon, which is home to about half of the Philippines' 110 million population. Categorised as a super typhoon on Tuesday, Doksuri had weakened slightly on Wednesday. It is expected to brush past Taiwan and make landfall in China's Fujian province on Friday, according to the Philippines weather bureau.

Kupcho expecting different challenge in Chevron defence
  + stars: | 2023-04-18 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +1 min
April 18 (Reuters) - American Jennifer Kupcho is expecting a very different challenge as she defends her first major title away from the familiar surrounds of last year's triumph, with the Chevron Championship kicking off the women’s major calendar at a new Texas venue after more than 50 years in its former Palm Springs home. Kupcho had yet to clinch a LPGA Tour title before her victory last year, when she held on through a nervy back nine to win by two shots. Yet the world number 20 will find very different conditions this year at Carlton Woods course. The 25-year-old picked up two more wins on the tour after her Chevron title but has struggled to make much of an impact in 2023, most recently finishing tied for 25th at the DIO Implant LA Open. Feel like I have my feet under me and ready to go," Kupcho added.
The UK is one of the world's largest offshore wind markets, with more than 10 GW of installed capacity. Japan has launched a second major round of public auctions to select operators for four new areas capable of generating 1.8 GW of offshore wind power. It wants to install up to 10 GW of offshore wind capacity by 2030 and up to 45 GW by 2040. Shapps did not specifically mention the offshore wind power auctions but said there were "very broad areas of cooperation between UK and Japan" in offshore wind development. He also noted the targets set by G7 on solar and offshore wind generation were "overall" for the group.
MAPUTO, March 11 (Reuters) - Cyclone Freddy was settling off the coast of Mozambique on Saturday, bringing flooding and high winds to Quelimane two weeks after killing at least 27 people in southern Africa when it first made landfall last month. After swirling for 34 days straight, the weather system is likely to have broken the record for the longest-lasting tropical cyclone. The cyclone is slow-moving, which meteorological experts say means it will pick up more moisture off the sea, bringing heavy rainfall. More than 171,000 people were affected after the cyclone swept through southern Mozambique last month, bringing heavy rains and floods that damaged crops and destroyed houses, with OCHA putting its death toll at 27 so far -- 10 in Mozambique and 17 in Madagascar. More than half a million people are at risk in Mozambique this time, especially around in Zambezia, Tete, Sofala and Nampula and Zambezia provinces.

[1/5] Dec 4, 2022; Cincinnati, Ohio, USA; Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) looks to throw during the first quarter against the Cincinnati Bengals at Paycor Stadium. Former MVP Patrick Mahomes, 27, expects to shake off an injury doubt to lead his Chiefs to revenge over the Bengals in their fifth straight conference championship appearance. Last year's overtime heartbreaker saw Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow off to the Super Bowl in only his second season. In the NFC Championship, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy is looking to put the cherry on top of his improbable Cinderella story on the road in Philadelphia. The conditions get tougher, it gets a little steeper, gets a little harder to breathe.

Dec 3 (Reuters) - Norway's Aleksander Aamodt Kilde overcame flu-like symptoms to defeat rival Marco Odermatt and claim his second straight World Cup victory in the downhill at Beaver Creek on Saturday. Kilde, 30, also topped the podium at Lake Louise last weekend and now has eight World Cup titles to his name. "I caught the flu in Lake Louise after a nice weekend. "And also there are a lot of contenders at the start and it is never easy to win races." Odermatt, who won the Super-G in Lake Louise last week and is favoured to do so again on Sunday, is still searching for his first World Cup win in downhill.
North Jutland, DenmarkSouthern Europe swells with crowds during summer, and it can also get hot to the point of extremely uncomfortable in July and August. Temperatures in Seville and other spots in southern Spain recently exceeded the 110˚ Fahrenheit mark (43.3 Celsius). MontenegroLeave Croatia’s jam-packed Dubrovnik to the hordes of “Game of Thrones” hangers-on and make for less-trampled spots in neighboring Montenegro instead. It’s just 40 minutes from the popular beaches of Taormina, which are flooded with “White Lotus” fans this summer. There are beaches all around the peninsula, but if you only hit two, Mylopotamos and Fakistra on the Aegean side are the can’t-miss spots.
