US returns looted antiquities worth $10 million to India
  + stars: | 2024-11-15 | by ( Karina Tsui | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —The United States has returned more than 1,400 looted artifacts worth $10 million to India as part of an ongoing initiative to repatriate stolen art from countries across South and Southeast Asia, the Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced Wednesday. The trafficked goods recovered include items that, until recently, were on view at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. The DA’s office obtained an arrest warrant for him in 2012though he remains in custody in India, pending his extradition to the US. Since its creation over a decade ago, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Antiquities Trafficking Unit –– a task force of lawyers, investigators and art experts –– has recovered 5,800 antiquities valued at almost $460 million. In July, the US and India signed an agreement to protect cultural property by preventing illegal trades and streamlining the process of returning stolen antiquities back to India.

Gavin Newsom vetoed an artificial intelligence safety bill on Sunday. Gavin Newsom vetoed an artificial intelligence safety bill on Sunday, a win for AI heavyweights like OpenAI and Big Tech companies that lobbied against it. The debate in California reflects the challenge governments face walking the fine line between allowing tech companies to innovate while protecting against new potential risks. Elon Musk, who founded AI company xAI last year, said last month that although it was "a tough call and will make some people upset," he thought "California should probably pass the SB 1047 AI safety bill." Several former OpenAI employees also supported the safety bill and said that OpenAI's opposition to the bill was disappointing.

California governor vetoes contentious AI safety bill
  + stars: | 2024-09-29 | by ( Story Reuters | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Reuters —California Governor Gavin Newsom on Sunday vetoed a hotly contested artificial intelligence safety bill, after the tech industry raised objections, saying it could drive AI companies from the state and hinder innovation. The AI industry is growing fast in California and some leaders questioned the future of these companies in the state if the bill became law. Developers of AI software operating in the state would have also needed to outline methods for turning off the AI models, effectively a kill switch. Alphabet’s Google, Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Meta Platforms, all of which are developing generative AI models, had expressed their concerns about the proposal. Newsom separately signed legislation requiring the state to assess potential threats posed by Generative AI to California’s critical infrastructure.

"OpenAI opposes even the extremely light-touch requirements in SB 1047, most of which OpenAl claims to voluntarily commit to, raising questions about the strength of those commitments." They said the existing federal legislation OpenAI is using to support its case is "woefully inadequate." They said they hoped their letter would help push the California legislature to pass SB 1047. In an email to Business Insider, a spokesperson for OpenAI said the letter misrepresented the company's position on the bill. "We strongly disagree with the mischaracterization of our position on SB 1047.

"We joined OpenAI because we wanted to ensure the safety of the incredibly powerful AI systems the company is developing," the researchers, William Saunders and Daniel Kokotajlo, wrote in the letter. "But we resigned from OpenAI because we lost trust that it would safely, honestly, and responsibly develop its AI systems." SB1047 "has inspired thoughtful debate," and OpenAI supports some of its safety provisions, Kwon's letter, dated a day before the researchers' letter was sent, read. “If people really want salads from McDonald’s we will gladly relaunch salads,” said Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald’s USA, in a June interview at the Wall Street Journal’s annual Global Food Forum. For McDonald’s, putting salads on the menu was likely a way to avoid the veto vote and stay atop recent healthy food trends. McDonald’s salads were “one likely source of these infections,” the CDC said at the time. McDonald’s removed salads from national menus in 2020 to help simplify restaurant operations, the company said. Another menu item that’s not coming to McDonald’s any time soon?

Hooters closes dozens of restaurants

New York CNN —Hooters is the latest chain to close dozens of locations across the United States, blaming tough economic challenges including rising food and labor costs. “Like many restaurants under pressure from current market conditions, Hooters has made the difficult decision to close a select number of underperforming stores,” a spokesperson told CNN. In that time prices ticked up 0.2% at limited service spots, which include fast casual and fast food joints. The increases, particularly in fast food prices, have caused customers to pull back on spending and complain online, eroding the sector’s reputation for affordability. It’s not just Hooters feeling the financial brunt from cash-conscious customers: Applebee’s, TGI Fridays, Boston Market, California Pizza Kitchen and bankrupt Red Lobster have all recently closed restaurants.

3 risks to global economic growth

Prospects for the world’s poorest economies are even more worrisome.”Here are three risks the World Bank sees. New York CNN —Starbucks is the latest entrant in the value menu wars, joining its rivals in releasing new offers to lure back cash-strapped consumers. The offer, available all day, comes in two options: For $5, a customer can order a tall iced or hot coffee or an iced or hot tea paired with a croissant. For Starbucks, it’s part of broader changes rolling out this summer, which include a new iced coffee blend, updated its app with more accurate ordering times and new promotions. Starbucks is also making tweaks to its two-year-old partnership with Delta Air Lines’ SkyMiles program, which lets customers earn miles on every transaction. Beginning Wednesday, customers will only earn miles on Starbucks account reloads of $25 or more rather than per dollar spent at its cafes.
