From the front door of X, which is closing up shop in San Francisco on Friday, Market Street runs straight through downtown to the bay. Now, as X leaves its spot, Market Street is still suffering from all the same problems it had before Twitter. After handing over millions of dollars in tax breaks to one of the world's wealthiest corporations, San Francisco has nothing to show for it. AdvertisementI keep remembering a work trip I took to San Francisco in 1999, a few years before I moved here. "Our focus remains on working with and supporting the many businesses that call San Francisco home," the statement reads.

Read previewThere's been an investor gold rush to find the hottest new startup, causing a new dynamic: larger seed rounds. In some cases, the seed round is getting out of control. Tier one multi-stage firms have decided to allocate more resources to investing at the seed stage, according to several traditional seed investors who Business Insider spoke to. Related storiesMy colleague Sri Muppidi has reported on these supersized seed rounds in AI startups throughout the summer. Other supersized seed rounds this year include a $10.5 million round by Swedish legal AI startup Leya, and Gameplay Galaxy recently announced a $24 million seed round for its Web3 gaming platform.

“I’m, like, a smart person,” he boasted on one occasion. “I went to an Ivy League college, I was a nice student,” he said on another. On the left, people think emphasizing intellect and elite schools betrays unfair advantage in a multiple-intelligences, equitable-outcome world. On the right, your average MAGA Joe bristles at anyone who comes across as a coastal elite or too smart for his own good. In MAGA world, glorified ignorance actually serves as a qualification for higher office (see: Lauren Boebert, Marjorie Taylor Greene), empowering more effective rage against “the liberal elite” and “the ruling class.”

Earnings reports from Google’s parent company, Alphabet, and Tesla on Tuesday led to a drop in big tech stocks, while shares of smaller companies remained strong. The Russell 2000, an index of smaller companies that’s considered to be more tied to the ebb and flow of the economy, was down just 0.48 percent, in line with trading in recent weeks and indicating that shares of smaller companies stayed relatively robust. Investors were expecting perfection from the tech giants’ earnings reports, said Daniel Ives, a tech analyst at Wedbush Securities. “Investors are negatively reacting to any whiff of softness that we see from these big tech players,” he said. “I think it’s an overreaction after a massive run in tech stocks.”

Like many Americans who watched the presidential debate on Thursday night, I knew when it was over that there was no way I was going to sleep. Not long after the debate, Vice President Kamala Harris appeared on CNN with Anderson Cooper. Didn’t Harris flame out in the last Democratic presidential primary, leaving just in time to avoid an embarrassing loss in her home state, California? For women — and for Black women in particular — the gender and racial dynamics of the presidential primary race seem especially difficult to navigate. Unlike Trump’s previous female debate rival, Hillary Clinton, nary a whiff of scandal has besmirched Harris.

CNN —Every host country of the Olympic Games faces a reckoning. But the world’s biggest sporting event holds a mirror up to a nation like few other events. After a public investment of billions of dollars and years of preparations, what do we, the host country, want to show the world about ourselves? Far-right leader Marine Le Pen took aim at Nakamura’s supposed “vulgarity,” suggesting that her representing France would “humiliate” the country. “What is the point of holding the Olympic Games in France if we then hide who we are?” asked Marion Marechal, an arch-conservative whose party attracts the country’s disaffected Catholics.

CNN —Top Republican senators are defending Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito as the conservative justice became embroiled in a second flag controversy, even as some Democrats call for Alito to recuse himself from key matters pending before the high court. “I just think Democrats are determined to harass members of the Supreme Court. So obviously, they don’t like Justice Alito or the decisions he makes,” he told CNN. Several prominent Republican senators criticized Alito over the upside-down flag. “I think the question is how many MAGA battle flags does the Supreme Court justice have to fly until the rest of the court takes it seriously?” he asked.

An earlier generation of Supreme Court justices seemed to possess the capacity for shame. In 1969, Justice Abe Fortas resigned his seat for accepting a $20,000 consulting fee (which he returned) from a foundation led by a man who was convicted of securities fraud. Whatever Justice Fortas believed about his own honor and morality, he understood that the Supreme Court is an inherently fragile institution, and that its nine justices cannot afford the slightest whiff of bias or corruption. They are saying, in effect, that they don’t care if any of this bothers you. To go by recent polls showing that this court’s public approval has approached record lows, it bothers many millions of Americans.

At the time I thought I might want to have kids, and Barry thought he probably didn't. During college I told my mother that I worried that I wouldn't make a good parent because I didn't enjoy children much. Louisa Rogers and her husband Barry enjoy spending time with their grandsons. On the other hand, I married Barry knowing he was uncertain, so my wish couldn't have been that strong. Since I have many peers who, like me, don't have biological children, I don't feel alone.

New York CNN —Ivan Boesky, the infamous insider trader whose name became synonymous with financial greed and helped inspire the fictional character Gordon Gekko in the 1987 film “Wall Street,” has died. His daughter, Marianne Boesky, confirmed to CNN on Monday that he died in his sleep. Nicknamed “Ivan the Terrible” on a 1986 Time Magazine cover, Boesky profited from the corporate takeover boom in the 1980s, using insider information to receive advanced information on pending deals. He pleaded guilty in 1986 to insider trading and was sentenced to three years of prison and fined $100 million, half of which went to returning the profits he made from insider trading and the other half as a civil penalty. Boesky was barred from securities trading for the rest of his life.

The unit, known as the General Security Service, relied on a network of Gaza informants, some of whom reported their own neighbors to the police. People landed in security files for attending protests or publicly criticizing Hamas. Hamas has long run an oppressive system of governance in Gaza, and many Palestinians there know that security officials watch them closely. Security officials trailed journalists and people they suspected of immoral behavior. Political protests were viewed as threats to be undermined.

It was the early 2000s, and I had recently moved from Turkey to study at the University of Texas. “This is what a police state looks like!” they started chanting. While making breakfast in my kitchen this week, I heard the sound of someone cleaning a window which instantly reminded me of a scene from the movie, "Coraline." Even when we aren't looking for it, nostalgia finds us. Nostalgia is "a wistful or excessively sentimental yearning for return to or of some past period or irrecoverable condition," according to Merriam-Webster. It's a "mixed emotional experience, so when we're nostalgic, we may experience a sense of loss and longing. honeyhousephotography.comI started dating men without childrenThe answer has been to date men without children, which I've found to be easier, as I only have time to date when my children are with their father. After deleting the dating apps a few years ago, these days I only date men I'm already friends with — even if they live in other countries. However, virtual dating can't replace the chemistry and spark of an in-person meeting. Carlotta Cattelani, the UK country manager at the dating app Fruitz, told BI that meeting virtually makes dates more accessible. AdvertisementA virtual date is a less formal chance to see if your match is searching for the same things you are, Cattelani said. She warns that speaking virtually cannot entirely replace meeting someone in person, so FaceTime dates should be used sparingly. It's easier to be "catfished" on social media, she said, because virtual dates cannot replace the chemistry, body language, and eye contact you might experience in real life.
