This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. At the July 4 polls, the Conservative Party suffered a massive defeat at the hands of its rivals, Labour. UK Prime Minister and Conservative Party leader Sunak conceded defeat to Labour leader Kier Starmer early Friday morning. Audience support led to multiple rereleases, elevating the film from a cult classic to a must-watch movie during both Halloween and Christmas. The Employee Retention Credit was intended to be a financial lifeline to small businesses struggling to make ends meet during the pandemic. Innovation Refunds — a consulting firm that focuses on the ERC — was one of the most visible advertisers during the tax credit's heyday. How Innovation Refunds worksOn its website, Innovation Refunds makes it clear it is not a tax professional. Innovation Refunds markets to clients, determines if they are viable candidates for the credit and then collects businesses' documentation. Some former employees said this could insulate Innovation Refunds from potential liability if ineligible businesses claimed the credit.

But A24’s newly restored 40th anniversary print of the band’s legendary concert film “Stop Making Sense” feels like a moment for a reappraisal. Talking Heads’ lyrics are undeniably more elliptical than N.W.A.’s or the Dead Kennedys’. “Stop Making Sense” starts off within the bounds of that New Wave approach. Byrne’s idiosyncratic dancing and physical appearance are central to “Stop Making Sense,” and he never stops being malfunctioning, android or ectomorph. “Stop Making Sense” included singers Lynn Mabry and Ednah Hold, legendary Parliament-Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales and The Brothers Johnson guitarist Alex Weir.

236, Spider-Man does indeed try to join the Avengers — and he does it because he finds out the Avengers make $1,000 per week. If the Fantastic Four represent a fantasy of an actual family, and the X-Men represent a fantasy of found family, maybe the Avengers represent a fantasy of adult life and, well, work. The story lines they follow offer comics fans another kind of twist and a different kind of team. This establishes a pattern we’ll see again and again with the Avengers of new hires that do and don’t work out. The atmosphere among the Avengers is less league of heroes bound by honor than Earth’s most hostile work environment: a constantly shifting, conflict-generating story machine.

When Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, I was writing a novel. But Russia, not content with destroying the statehood of Ukraine once before, had other plans. Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu met with Kim Jong Un in North Korea this week. North Korea commemorates the national holiday as "Victory Day," even though the conflict ended in a stalemate. Still, the Russian visit to North Korea was an important one. North Korea is one of the few countries to publicly back Russia in the war in Ukraine. The country has denied engaging in arms transactions with Russia, but the White House said North Korea shipped weapons, including rockets and missiles, to Russia in November.

The final season premiere of the docu-essay series “How To With John Wilson” opens, like many of its episodes, with a problem. Wilson, whose self-help ruminations began airing on HBO in 2020, has a home plumbing emergency that sends him on a search for New York City’s elusive public bathrooms. But the episode, “How to Find a Public Restroom,” is about more than the lengths New Yorkers will go to for relief. Wilson talks to cabdrivers who resort to peeing in empty water bottles for lack of accessible facilities. Wilson builds out his story like a complex system of plumbing.

Four strange girls, somewhere between 12 and 200 years old, live in an isolated cabin in the woods. Marlow (Sophia Anne Caruso) is the alpha, bossing the others around — and also bossing the stranded outsiders, because of course there are stranded outsiders in a play that trades on the tropes of a million horror tales. In “Grey House,” the prime trope is coy creepiness. “Grey House,” at the Lyceum Theater, is certainly an in-your-face assault, more in the manner of John Carpenter movies than anything seen onstage since the age of melodrama. But mostly let’s go with the freak-out fun of the four telekinetic weirdos and their den mother, Raleigh, played by Laurie Metcalf in a stringy salt-and-pepper wig that’s almost as frightening as she is.

That's the question posed by certain members of the Silicon Valley elite who are attributing layoffs to a boom-time phenomenon: over-hiring and "fake" work. A particular view of 'work'This concept of fake work is rooted, at least partly, in political disagreement. Several of the tech figures pushing these ideas lean Republican, in contrast to the left-leaning tech workers they're lambasting. He and others pushing a grind culture are motivated, as tech employees commenting on the workplace app Blind noted. "I think it's a false narrative to say many people do fake work, especially when companies already deploy workplace monitoring tools."

Students of history may recognize a concept I’ll call the Weirdo Theory of Crisis. In times of upheaval and strife (so goes the theory), unconventional figures have a way of slipping into power. They were also, in various combinations and to different degrees, messy, wounded human beings. “During prosperous times, none of Roosevelt’s up-and-coming lieutenants could have ventured far beyond political suburbia,” as Mr. Lebaert puts it. “Then the Great Depression changed everything.” Weirder still, these four survived into Roosevelt’s unprecedented fourth term, outlasting nearly every other secretary or top adviser, aside from the First Lady.
Why do people buy crackpot conspiracy theories?

When it comes to the spread of cockamamie conspiracy theories, Twitter was a maximum viable product long before Elon Musk paid $44 billion for the keys. The more you think you're right all the time, a new study suggests, the more likely you are to buy conspiracy theories, regardless of the evidence. It'd be better, or at least more reassuring, if conspiracy theories were fueled by dumb yahoos rather than self-centered monsters. Still, most scientists thought conspiracy theories weren't worth their time, the province of weirdos connecting JFK's death to lizard aliens. Pennycook's findings also suggest an explanation for why conspiracy theories have become so widely accepted.
CNN —An international team of scientists say they have new insight into how the very earliest animals survived after traces of what they described as the world’s oldest meal were found in a 550 million-year-old fossil. Some of the oldest life on Earth is referred to as the Ediacaran biota. This group is based on the earliest fossils ever discovered, providing evidence of complex, multicellular organisms. Nearly all fossils that came before the Ediacaran biota were single-celled and microscopic in size,” Brocks said, according to a press release. Dr. Bobrovskiy said the findings are helping scientists track the evolution of the earliest animals, and how they relate to their descendants today.
A federal affidavit debunks far-right conspiracy theories about the attack on Paul Pelosi. Paul Pelosi was hospitalized with a skull fracture but is expected to fully recover. The attacker entered the bedroom and said he wanted to talk to "Nancy," according to the affidavit. The affidavit, however, explains that Paul Pelosi had said in the call the man who identified himself as David was waiting for Nancy Pelosi, and he didn't know him. Jenkins also said the attacker was looking for Nancy Pelosi and that reports that a third person was at the home were untrue.
“THEY’RE VERY NICE, inspiring weirdos.” That’s how Louis Vuitton women’s artistic director Nicolas Ghesquière describes his fashion-industry peers. Growing up in France’s relatively remote Loire Valley, Mr. Ghesquière, 51, dreamed of being one such weirdo. He’d watch fashion programs on TV, special-order magazines with his mother and customize friends’ clothes. “As a kid [fashion] was my way of expressing myself,” recalled the Paris-based designer. Since 2013, he’s been at Vuitton, whose new spring 2023 collection was shown in Paris earlier this month at the Louvre Museum’s Cour Carrée.
"Make Instagram Instagram again," the half sisters advised in posts on the platform, circulating a petition to stop the changes. And Zuckerberg won't be able to say Kim and Kylie didn't warn him. This after Facebook — Meta's former crown jewel — back in February reported a loss of users for the first time. But it all mostly boils down to the fact that Meta doesn't know how to innovate its product anymore. Flying a plane into a virtual mountainNow, none of this is to say that Meta doesn't make money.
