Microsoft emerged as the most under-owned megacap stock among institutional investors, signaling a rebound could be on the horizon, according to Morgan Stanley. Morgan Stanley thinks that stocks tend to experience a technical pull higher when active ownership is much lower than their weightings in the S & P 500, and vice versa. The gap between Microsoft's S & P 500 weighting and institutional ownership stood at 2.08% by the end of the third quarter, making it the most under-owned Big Tech name, Morgan Stanley said. After Microsoft, Apple is the second-most under-owned megacap tech stock coming out of the third quarter. On the flip side, the most over-owned tech stock at the end of September is software company Intuit , which could see a technical downward pull soon, according to Morgan Stanley.

The iShares Expanded Tech-Software Sector ETF (IGV) has been getting a lot of attention, and rightly so. Things have recently accelerated in November, and Tuesday, the IGV Software ETF was one of just three ETFs we track to make new all-time highs. Within the IGV Software ETF, it also has the third biggest weighting, but it's behind both CRM and ORCL. More importantly, MSFT has been noticeably lagging the IGV ETF across various time frames. The potential good news is that: 1. the ratio line remains in a long-term uptrend and 2. the last two oversold conditions happened near major relative trading lows.

Over the 12-month period ending June, about 2 of 3 active bond managers trounced their average passive counterpart, according to a recent analysis from Morningstar . There were a few tailwinds in active managers' favor. With the Fed recently cutting rates by a half point — and Chair Jerome Powell noting that two more quarter-point cuts could be in the cards this year — a new challenge awaits these active bond funds. As interest rates fall, active managers can position accordingly, said Roger Hallam, global head of rates at Vanguard. "We expect active managers to make a little more, and they should be because they're doing more trades and it costs more to manage active portfolios," said Olmsted.

The rise and fall of the "Nifty Fifty" stocks in the 1970s is a cautionary tale for investors in the Magnificent Seven craze, according to BCA Research. The "Nifty Fifty" refers to a loose group of stocks including Coca-Cola , IBM , Xerox and Pfizer , that rose to prominence in the 1970 to 1973 bull market. The comments from BCA come as the Magnificent Seven stocks continue powering the market to new heights despite a modest pullback this summer. The surge stems from ongoing bets around growth stocks and the artificial intelligence theme, especially as the Federal Reserve begins cutting rates. While we are getting a tech rally Wednesday thanks to Advanced Micro Devices (up 7%), this is the month when rotation became more than a one day event. Since small-cap companies often have more debt and higher borrowing costs, the expectation of lower rates is certainly a factor. I noted weeks ago that more fundamentally inclined investors were worried about the slower rate of earnings growth for big cap technology stocks . The Russell 2000 would also benefit any time a rotation out of tech occurs because the weightings are different. While the two sectors that comprise technology in the S & P 500 (Technology and Communication Services) are about 40% of the S & P 500, the Russell 2000 is much more diverse.

Harris For President Campaign | Via ReutersFinancial experts describe Vice President Kamala Harris' investment style in one word: Boring. In her role as vice president, Harris filed a public financial disclosure report for 2023, which was signed in May. Carolyn McClanahan, a certified financial planner and founder of Life Planning Partners in Jacksonville, Florida, who also reviewed Harris' financial disclosure, said it makes her "heart sing" to see Harris investing in low-cost passive investment strategies. Since 2020, mortgage rates have increased substantially, which means the couple missed their chance to lock in a low rate for a longer term. McClanahan said she urged everyone to lock in the record low mortgage rates that were available back then.

The usual rebalancing of the S & P 500 index and the exchange traded funds around it is a quarterly event occurring Friday. There are exchange-traded funds that follow the broad market benchmark and ETFs that track the S & P 500 sector indexes, including technology. The S & P 500 indexes are pure indexes. Nvidia could become 99% of the S & P 500 by market capitalization, and it would be reflected in the index. This trio dominates the S & P 500 technology index.

Nvidia 's blistering rally will force a major technology exchange-traded fund to acquire more than $10 billion worth of shares of the chip giant while cutting dramatically back on Apple . The index that the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) follows will soon rebalance, based on an adjusted market cap value from Friday's close. As a result, Microsoft and Nvidia will likely have a weight of around 21%, while Apple will fall sharply to about 4.5%, Bartolini said. That is a change from the prior weightings, which saw Nvidia's weight be kept artificially low by index rules. As of June 14, Microsoft and Apple were both at about 22% each in the fund, while Nvidia was just 6%.

The result was a 1.5-percent weekly drop in the S & P 500 , with Friday's setback exacerbated at least somewhat by a collective clenching-up of risk markets on some geopolitical worry. This dynamic hasn't been reversed, but the signal has grown a bit staticky, draining some conviction from the macro bullish case with the S & P 500 still 24% above the October low. Bull market's backdrop First, it's a bull market, and not a particularly mature or excessively generous one yet. Yet both stocks are still outperforming the S & P this year. The S & P 500 closed Friday at exactly the same level of five weeks earlier, on March 8 – which was perhaps the moment of maximum investor confidence in the "we can have it all" thesis.

The same is true for the argument that the S&P 500 is already on the doorstep of even the most ambitious year-end price targets. Even if there's a typical 10% correction exacerbated by weakness in mega caps, Belski wrote that stocks can remain resilient. "Underlying leadership patterns are likely to be very different this year, with significantly more participation coming from non-mega-cap stocks," Belski wrote. Their huge and growing earnings, combined with a large number of shares outstanding, mean that the three companies exert a bigger influence on the S & P 500 earnings picture than any other. Fourth quarter earnings for the entire S & P 500 are expected to rise about 5% over the same period in 2022. For share-weighted earnings, the earnings (or earnings estimates) for each company are multiplied by the shares outstanding. What this means is that companies that are experiencing a rapid increase in their earnings can begin to exert an outsized influence on S & P 500 earnings. In a world where the S & P 500 is expected to see earnings growth of 10% this year, Nvidia's earnings growth is off the charts.

Earnings season ramps up next week, with five of the Super Six mega-cap stocks delivering results. Employment numbers are the most important economic data, with Friday's January nonfarm payrolls report carrying the most weight. The January ISM Manufacturing report on Thursday and December's factory orders report Friday are expected to show the sector still in contraction mode.
