A pro-Hamas organization that has helped organize protests on American college campuses is a “sham charity” that fundraises for a terrorist group, the Treasury Department said Tuesday. Kates’ husband, Khaled Barakat, was also sanctioned by the Treasury Department. The Treasury Department said its actions would help protect legitimate charity organizations. Barbara McQuade, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Michigan, said the Treasury designation will impact Samidoun’s fundraising efforts. Matthew Miller, a State Department spokesperson, said in a statement that the “United States will continue to disrupt sham organizations that function under the guise of humanitarian organizations while funding terrorism.”

Supporting nonprofits on GivingTuesday this year could have a bigger impact than usual. Many nonprofits will run matching campaigns, meaning a supporter has pledged to double or sometimes triple the donation of other, smaller donors. That would follow the trend of charitable giving in 2022, which dropped for only the fourth time in 40 years. Other nonprofits, though, aim to rally support from the communities they seek to serve, and GivingTuesday can help with that. ___Associated Press coverage of philanthropy and non-profits receives support through the AP’s collaboration with The Conversation US, with funding from Lilly Endowment Inc.

Today, I've built two seven-figure online businesses — a music education company and a business coaching brand. When I started my first business, people would stress to me the importance of the "hustle and grind." So I made a pivotal decision to never work more than 40 hours a week, including no nights or weekends, and have since shaved that down to only five hours a week. So if you really put your mind to it and give yourself 40 hours a week to get something done, it will take 40 hours. When I branched out as a business coach, I hit six figures in my first year without a single contractor.

Our life stories converged when we were colleagues and friends for 10 years on the faculty of Princeton University. Notwithstanding our different backgrounds, we are both alarmed by the climate on campuses and the polarizing and dehumanizing language visible throughout society. Faculty and students on some campuses across the country have reported feeling unsafe in light of verbal and physical attacks. The polarizing talk in media, political and campus circles create an environment lacking in sophistication and nuance. There is no better place for these discussions than a university campus.
