AdvertisementWe live in Asheville, and after Hurricane Helene, my kids wanted to donate toys. After watching the episode "Making Room for a Baby," I desperately wanted to "clean up my life," both metaphorically and physically. The labor of tossing out items that no longer "sparked joy" unironically did just that: sparked joy and gave me a renewed sense of hope for the future. To help our daughters better understand the scope of the damage, we drove through the decimated areas of town. AdvertisementI explained the basic idea: We would go through each individual item one by one and ask ourselves if it sparked joy.

Dollar steady at August high on U.S. rates view, election

The U.S. dollar clung to a two-and-half-month high on Tuesday on expectations the Federal Reserve will take a measured approach to interest rate cuts, while a close battle in the upcoming U.S. election kept investors on edge. The U.S. dollar clung to a two-and-half-month high on Tuesday on expectations the Federal Reserve will take a measured approach to interest rate cuts, while a close battle in the upcoming U.S. election kept investors on edge. Four Federal Reserve policymakers expressed support on Monday for further rate cuts, but appeared to differ on how fast or far they believe any cuts should go. With the U.S. election just two weeks away, the rising odds of former President Donald Trump winning the Nov. 5 election are boosting the dollar, since his proposed tariff and tax policies are seen as likely to keep U.S. interest rates high. The yen on Tuesday was at 150.57 per dollar, hovering close to the two-and-half-month low of 150.88.

And I've applied my findings both to help adults and to help parents assist their kids. It starts by nurturing their mental strength in these six ways. Help your child build this habit when they're analyzing any problem, and you help them become mentally stronger. Help them focus on process versus outcomeWhen kids focus too much on the outcome of their efforts, it can lead to perfectionism. But becoming overzealous about results can eat away at kids' mental strength because so many factors besides effort can influence the outcome.

Tuesday’s debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump is the culmination of 75 days of utter and unprecedented campaign chaos — and the beginning of a 55-day race to Election Day through equally uncharted waters. The best-polling third-party candidate in a generation, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., saw his numbers collapse, and he is out of the race and supporting Trump. The sides even flipped on the debate rules, with the Harris campaign (unsuccessfully) pushing for open microphones during the whole debate after Biden’s team favored turning candidates’ mics off when it is not their turn. Harris’ campaign put a policy page on her website only on Monday. For making it through the past 75 days of chaos, America now gets 55 days of unpredictability with little precedent in modern history.

On this holy weekend, one man is taking the Resurrection personally. Donald Trump is presenting himself as the Man on the Cross, tortured for our sins. Yet, more and more, Trump is wallowing in his Messiah complex. Two-Corinthians Trump wouldn’t know the difference between Old and New Testaments. So he may not realize that, rather than a sacrificial lamb, he is the Golden Calf, the false god worshiped by Israelites when Moses went up to Mount Sinai to get the Ten Commandments.

Across the Capitol, the chairman of a different panel compared a member of his committee to a cartoon character. It began early Tuesday morning, when former Speaker Kevin McCarthy had a run-in with Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee, one of the eight Republicans who had voted to oust him from the speakership last month, in the basement of the Capitol. Mr. Burchett said he had been speaking with journalists in a hallway following a party confab when Mr. McCarthy elbowed him in the back, then kept walking.

China's trade slump narrows as stabilisation signs emerge

“The trade data is marginally better, but I don’t think we should be reading too much into that: trade is still contracting,” said Frederic Neumann, chief Asia economist at HSBC. “There is a bit of a sign here of stabilisation, but I think there’s still a long way to go,” he added. “Looking ahead, whether China’s trade growth has already hit the bottom will hinge on several factors, the most important of which is obviously domestic demand.”Governments around the world are nervous about China’s economic slowdown with many exporting nations highly dependent on the country’s market for growth. However, trade with Japan dropped sharply, with outbound shipments from China to its neighbour down 20% in August year-on-year, while imports worsened by 17%. China posted a trade surplus of $68.36 billion in August, compared with a forecast $73.80 billion and a July figure of $80.6 billion.

Taking the witness stand, she recalled that Ms. Carroll had phoned her immediately after the alleged incident with Mr. Trump “breathless, hyperventilating, emotional,” but that the subject did not come up between them again for another quarter century. Carroll is a very up person; she is not a victim,” Ms. Birnbach said. A pair of big media personalities — Ms. Carroll was a well-known advice columnist by then — meeting so unexpectedly to do something vaguely conspiratorial. At the outset, the story seemed so paradigmatically “New York,” Ms. Carroll explained in her testimony.
Day five of the E. Jean Carroll trial started with testimony from the writer's friend Lisa Birnbach. Birnbach said Carroll called her minutes after her alleged rape by Donald Trump in the mid-1990s. Carroll was "hyperventilating" and appeared to be "still processing" while recalling the alleged rape, Birnbach said. "No, no, no, I'm not going to the police," Birnbach recalled Carroll saying. E. The setting for the second season of “White Lotus,” which premieres on HBO on Sunday, has shifted from a lavish five-star hotel nestled on a pristine beach in Hawaii to a luxury resort in the foothills of Sicily. What hasn’t changed is that the staff members working at the hotels are more relatable than the guests. Reboots of “Gossip Girl” and “The Kardashians” met similar fates as they failed to reach the heights of their originals. As most of us belong to the 99%, shows that scrutinize the top percentile are that much more delectable. “White Lotus” is one of the shows that manages to navigate both successfully, showcasing trust-fund babies who self-implode without the viewer feeling sorry for them.
The Soviet Union became a gerontocracy in its final years, contributing to its collapse. And Reagan was right: Soviet leaders had consistently died on the job. "It doesn't matter whether it's the Soviet Union or the United States — there's always a clash" between older and younger generations, Grunewald said. They were afraid to let it go," said Zubok, the author of "Collapse: The Fall of the Soviet Union." And that did become a central factor in the demise of the Soviet Union."
