AdvertisementIn recent years, young Americans moved to rural areas at rates not seen in decades. But that doesn't mean they're turning rural counties red. In the years leading up to the election, young people flocked from urban areas to rural counties at record rates — but they didn't necessarily bring their big-city politics with them. The colored swing column in the table shows the percentage point change in vote share for Trump between 2020 and 2024. Those who did vote went more conservative.

Congressional Republicans acknowledge that Vance hasn’t necessarily developed longstanding relationships on Capitol Hill during his abbreviated time in Washington. His coattails turned a 49-51 senate to a 53-47 senate,” Vance wrote on X on Wednesday. The three developed a bond that predates the campaign and has carried into the early days of Trump’s transition. But when you look at the effectiveness of JD in the campaign, there’s no better surrogate for President Trump’s agenda,” the adviser said. “In JD’s view, his role of VP is to take on any issue that President Trump would like him to take on,” the person close to Vance told CNN.

North Carolina Republican lawmakers voted to strip the state’s incoming Democratic governor and attorney general of key powers, passing a sweeping bill before the GOP likely loses their veto-proof supermajority in the Legislature next year. That power currently lies with the governor's office, which will remain in Democratic hands after Attorney General Josh Stein defeated Republican Lt. Gov. Republicans have long sought control of the state Board of Elections, which is historically controlled by the same party as the current governor, but their past efforts have been foiled by the courts. That means they would be unable to override any future vetos from Stein without Democratic support. Stein is succeeding outgoing Cooper, whose administration repeatedly clashed with the Republican-led Legislature in the battleground state.

Voters in California have narrowly rejected a ballot measure that would have gradually increased the minimum wage in the state to $18 per hour, NBC News projected Wednesday. It’s the first time a ballot measure proposing to raise the statewide minimum wage has failed nationwide since 1996. Some cities within New York also implement a minimum wage of $16 per hour, while Washington state’s minimum wage is $16.26 per hour. The defeat is the first time in 28 years that a ballot measure to increase a state minimum wage was defeated. Meanwhile, ballot measures in two other states to increase the minimum wage overwhelmingly passed this month.

Of course, these basic rules of political decorum are ones Donald Trump has rarely followed. He’s been accumulating political capital, and his victory only gives him an opening to accumulate more ... if he chooses to. On some level, I accept the notion that one person’s revenge is another person’s “reform,” so I’m sure Trump could argue he’s appointing reformists. What will ultimately matter is whether these folks can govern like reformers or end up simply as conduits for Trump’s revenge. Here’s the political problem Trump is creating for himself: He’s taking full ownership of the entire bureaucracy now.

CNN —The reaction from Democrats to Donald Trump’s 2024 victory is, to put it mildly, very much unlike their reaction to his 2016 win. When asked whether Trump’s win was legitimate, about 94% of voters said it was. This includes 64% who agreed that Trump’s win was legitimate and supported his presidency and another 30% who accepted Trump’s victory but indicated that they would oppose his presidency. A third of Clinton supporters in a mid-November 2016 ABC News/Washington Post poll said that Trump’s win was not legitimate. Democrats may have accepted Trump’s win, but he’s likely to upset them greatly during his presidency.

Trump’s turn to bask in Musk’s reflected glory

Musk, the Tesla and SpaceX visionary, has spent the last two weeks basking in Trump’s reflected glory at Mar-a-Lago. He’s around so much it’s almost like he’s family, and he even made it into a photo of Trump’s extended clan. Trump’s growing cultural cloutTrump’s visit to Musk’s launchpad was also the latest occasion since the election when he has inserted himself into high-profile photo-ops. The hit perhaps reflects Trump’s starry-eyed infatuation with Musk’s amazing array of spaceships and limitless ambition. With Musk, Trump might get more than he bargained for.

CNN —A Democratic election official in Pennsylvania offered an impassioned apology Wednesday for claiming “precedent by a court doesn’t matter anymore in this country” to justify counting about 600 faulty ballots in defiance of state Supreme Court rulings. “I made a mistake, and because I am an elected official, I am held to a far higher standard than everybody else. Her prior comments about flouting court precedent took off on social media and were promoted widely by Trump allies like Elon Musk. His Cabinet picks, including the Treasury secretary, traditionally have to be confirmed by the Senate. “The Treasury secretary has historically played a significant role in advancing the administration’s tax policy priorities,” Akabas said. Next year, Trump’s Treasury secretary will act as the quarterback, executing his economic gameplan. Interest in so-called “golden visas” has skyrocketed among US citizens since the election, according to consultants that help the wealthy migrate. Golden visas allow people to effectively buy foreign citizenship or residence through sizable investments, including in real estate, government bonds or startups. Jc Milhet/Hans Lucas/AFP/Getty ImagesInquiries about golden visas from Americans have increased 33% so far this year compared with the same period last year, with programs in Europe the most sought after. Portugal’s Golden Residence Permit Program tops the popularity list because it is relatively affordable, requiring a minimum outlay of €250,000 ($265,000) in support of the arts or national cultural heritage. With golden visas out of reach for most Americans, social media platforms are ablaze with chatter about other avenues for moving abroad.

LOS ANGELES — Erik and Lyle Menendez’s bid for freedom hit another possible roadblock this week as California Gov. Gavin Newsom said that he will not review their clemency request until after the incoming Los Angeles County district attorney makes a resentencing recommendation. More consequential, however, was the stagnant or shrinking turnout in these cities, which — coupled with turnout growth in Republican counties across the blue wall — drove Trump’s victory. While the number of voters throughout the rest of Michigan grew by 2.6%, the number in Detroit fell by 4%. NBC News Decision DeskThe third large blue wall city is Milwaukee, which makes up about 60% of Milwaukee County’s population. Even though turnout grew slightly overall in the city, just over half of precincts (58%) experienced a turnout decrease. Comparing Milwaukee’s sluggish turnout to Dane County — which is Wisconsin’s other large Democratic county, where turnout increased by over 6% — helps to show how different demographics may explain turnout changes.

Senate Democrats who pulled off victories even as President-elect Donald Trump won their states believe the Democratic Party can learn some lessons from their races as it grapples with losing control of Washington. Democrats still lost the Senate majority despite those victories, with Republicans flipping seats in Montana, Ohio and West Virginia. Democrats acknowledged Harris faced some headwinds in running a protracted campaign after taking over the ticket in late July. And while his party lost the White House, the House and the Senate, Schumer touted the Senate victories as more evidence that the party should be focused on the economy. Sometimes Democrats may be a little too solution-oriented, and people want to, first before you get to the solutions, hear empathy.

Marc Rowan, the billionaire CEO of Apollo Global Management, gave $1 million to Right for America, a pro-Trump super PAC. The super PAC also ran a controversial program that gave away $1 million checks to swing-state voters who signed Musk's petition. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court on Monday ordered election officials in the state to stop counting mail-in ballots marked with the wrong date or missing dates from their outer envelopes. The court order specifies that Bucks, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, where Republicans argue that officials have opted to count mail-in ballots with errors on their outer envelopes, must adhere to the high court's earlier rulings, which said undated or misdated mail-in ballots should not be counted. “David McCormick and the national Republicans are working to throw out provisional ballots cast by eligible Pennsylvania voters and accepted by county boards. McCormick leads Casey by 17,408 votes with 99.7% of the vote in and 24,000 ballots still to be counted. HONG KONG — A Hong Kong court sentenced dozens of leading pro-democracy figures to up to 10 years prison Tuesday in the single largest trial under a national security law that critics say has been used to all but eliminate political dissent in the Chinese territory. Lawyers for the defendants have argued that such action was within the bounds of Hong Kong law. In March, Hong Kong’s opposition-free legislature also enacted local national security legislation. Among the 47 are “second-tier pan-democrats” who were previously active members of the Hong Kong legislature, Burns said. Hong Kong officials said last month that there was no time limit for prosecuting the cases, noting that it takes time to gather evidence.

“The governor will defer to the DA-elect’s review and analysis of the Menendez case prior to making any clemency decisions.”Current District Attorney George Gascón, who has voiced strong support for the Menendez brothers’ clemency petition and submitted letters to the governor advocating for them, requested a judge in October to resentence the siblings, who are serving life without parole. With Hochman set to take office in December, questions have arisen about the future of the resentencing effort and the clemency process. The brothers, family members and the public deserve a thorough review, Hochman said. The renewed examination of the Menendez case comes more than 35 years after Jose and Kitty Menendez were shot dead in their Beverly Hills home. In the subsequent trial, much of the evidence regarding the alleged abuse was deemed inadmissible, resulting in the brothers’ conviction and life sentences.

But the decline in support for Ms. Harris in some of the country’s most liberal areas is particularly notable. For example, in Fulton County, which contains most of Atlanta, Ms. Harris gained about 4,500 votes, but Mr. Trump gained more than 7,400. He similarly outran Ms. Harris where she made gains in Wake County, N.C., Lancaster County, Pa., and Montgomery County, Texas. In Milwaukee County in swing-state Wisconsin, Ms. Harris lost 1,200 voters compared with Mr. Biden’s total in 2020, while Mr. Trump gained more than 3,500. But he lost votes, as did Ms. Harris, in majority-Black counties, especially those in the South where turnout dropped overall.
