Two Colombian nationals are facing extradition to the U.S. for their alleged role in a human smuggling operation that resulted in the disappearance at sea of dozens of migrants. Rivera and Linero were arrested by Colombian authorities in coordination with the U.S. as part of Joint Task Force Alpha. Joint Task Force Alpha was started in 2021 with a focus on migrant smuggling through Central America and Mexico. Mandatory minimum sentences for migrant smuggling as a stand-alone offense are relatively low compared to similar offenses like drug smuggling, but these aggravating factors allow prosecutors to seek harsher punishments. While Joint Task Force Alpha was started by the Biden administration, analysts believe it is likely to continue or even expand under the incoming Trump administration.

The suspect, Natalie Rupnow, who police say killed herself during the rampage, was just 15 — but even more surprisingly, she was a girl. Mass shootings carried out by females are vanishingly rare. Of the 441 mass shootings in the United States from 1966 to 2022, just 4.3% were carried out by women, research from the Rockefeller Institute of Government, a think tank, shows. The shooting took place during a hearing over her planned eviction from a property on tribal lands. “Even when mass shootings involve neighbors, strangers, and police, women and children overwhelmingly pay the price,” the study said.

Eleven Indian nationals were among 12 people found dead at a ski resort in the Caucasus Mountains of Georgia, officials said, in what may be a case of carbon monoxide poisoning. All were employees at a restaurant in Gudauri, a popular ski resort near the Russian border, Georgia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs said in a statement. “At the initial inspection, no signs of body injuries or signs of violence were detected,” the ministry said. The ministry said Georgian police were investigating the deaths as negligent manslaughter, adding that a forensic team was working to determine the exact cause of death. The aftermath of an “exceptionally violent” attack in early Bronze Age England suggests that at least 37 people may have been “systematically dismembered” and eaten, new research has revealed. Over 3,000 bones were excavated from a 50-foot pit in Charterhouse Warren, around 20 miles south of the city of Bristol in southwest England. and 2010 B.C., researchers suggest, adding that it's a unique example of extreme violence in Early Bronze Age Britain and that "nothing else on this scale” has been recorded in Britain. However, Schulting said the extreme violence was unlikely to have been an isolated incident in the U.K. at the time. The authors do not believe that the attackers were driven to eat the human remains because of hunger, as the bone fragments were found alongside these animal bones, indicating there was sufficient food.

Walmart has started giving store-level associates body cameras to wear as part of a pilot program at some of its U.S. locations, CNBC has learned. Walmart, the largest nongovernmental employer in the U.S., is testing the technology after smaller retailers started trying body cameras at their own stores as a way to deter theft. However, it's unclear whether body cameras actually help to deescalate conflict. Appelbaum, whose union does not represent Walmart employees but includes staff from retailers such as Macy's and H&M, said the RWDSU is concerned that body cameras are more about surveillance and deterring theft than making employees safer. She said body cameras could be part of the solution but cameras alone are "no substitute" for proper training.
