Hiring, educating, and housing refugees and asylum seekers is the "next big challenge" for businesses, according to a longtime leadership professor and UNICEF vice president. Low- and middle-income countries host 75% of the world's refugees, and around two-thirds of refugees live in poverty, according to the European Commission. "The corporate world is missing the next big challenge. We've grabbed it, but migration is the next big thing. "If somebody has a purpose that drives their thinking and therefore their action, it'll drive your spending, it'll drive your time, it'll drive your emotional commitments.

Havana, Cuba CNN —For more than 60 years Cuba has buckled under US economic sanctions and its own government’s missteps. The son of Cuban exiles, Rubio has long made it his mission to ramp up the US trade embargo on Cuba. If confirmed, Secretary of State Rubio will face far more pressing issues like Russia’s war in Ukraine, conflict in the Middle East and countering growing Chinese influence in the world, particularly in Latin America. As secretary of state, Rubio could run point on devising additional economic sanctions on Cuba, increasing funding for dissidents and pro-democracy programs that Havana considers tantamount to regime change, and further restricting US travel to Cuba. During the first Trump administration, “Rubio called the shots on Cuba,” a US diplomat who did want to be quoted by name told CNN.

Washington CNN —President-elect Donald Trump repeated numerous false claims during an interview that aired Sunday on NBC’s “Meet the Press” – including his old lie that the US is the world’s only country with birthright citizenship. Crime: Trump falsely claimed, “Crime is at an all-time high.” That is nowhere close to true. Trump and inflation: Trump falsely claimed that, during his presidency, “We had no inflation.” In fact, cumulative inflation during Trump’s presidency was about 8%. Venezuela, migration and prisoners: Trump repeated his regular tale about how Venezuela has supposedly emptied prisons to allow criminals to migrate to the US. The incoming Trump administration is preparing a list of countries to which it may deport migrants when their home countries refuse to accept them, according to three sources familiar with the plans. The American Civil Liberties Union and other pro-immigrant rights groups sued the Trump administration over the policy. As a result, many migrants from those countries end up released into the United States, even if a judge has ordered them deported. The sources also told NBC News the incoming administration has a goal of deporting migrants within a week of their arrest and believes this policy will help expedite deportations. He will deliver,” Karoline Leavitt, a Trump-Vance transition spokeswoman, told NBC News when asked for a comment about the plans.

It is hunting for leaks of methane — an invisible, super-polluting gas that is dramatically warming the planet. Although it’s leaking less overall than the Permian Basin, for example, it’s an older basin — with older, leaky equipment — that’s producing far less oil and gas. Natural gas is flared Andrews, Texas, part of the Permian Basin, in March 2022. Dilapidated equipment tends to be leakier, and in parts of the Caspian Basin, gas is often treated as a waste product and vented or flared. CNN —The United States announced new individual sanctions Wednesday on more than 20 officials aligned with Venezuela’s authoritarian President Nicolas Maduro, to put pressure on Maduro to accept the results of Venezuela’s July presidential election, senior administration officials said in a briefing with reporters. Thursday marks exactly four months from the July election, and senior officials believe the new sanctions will put pressure on Venezuelan officials to break ranks from the Maduro government and facilitate a democratic transition in that country. The new round of sanctions target military officials in the Bolivarian National Guard, Bolivarian National Police and other branches of the security apparatus, the US officials said. Among the officials sanctioned Wednesday are Maduro’s newly-installed chief of staff, Anibal Coronado, Communication Minister Freddy Ñañez, and the director of intelligence services Alexis Rodriguez. Asked if there has been any communication with President-elect Donald Trump’s national security team about Venezuela, one of the officials sidestepped.

In a year of landmark elections, my country’s presidential vote last month flew under the radar. And perhaps with good reason: Uruguay’s balloting was marked by unexciting candidates and their lackluster attempts to entice undecided voters to the polls. An uneventful vote seems preferable to the deep polarization that has surrounded presidential elections over the past year in countries like El Salvador, Argentina, Venezuela and even the United States. And young Uruguayans are afflicted by many problems. As it did in other countries, the Covid-19 pandemic left Uruguay in the grip of a mental-health crisis that hit this group hard.

CNN —Venezuelan authorities are investigating opposition leader Maria Corina Machado for alleged treason after she expressed support for a US bipartisan bill that seeks to block Washington from doing business with any entity that has commercial ties with the government of Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro. The US bill – introduced by Florida Reps. Mike Waltz (R) and Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D) – was passed on Monday by the House of Representatives. During a televised event on Wednesday, Maduro criticized the bill and said that the opposition’s actions against him will not be successful. Even after Venezuela’s electoral and judicial authorities announced Maduro’s victory, they have not shown detailed results and electoral records to support it, prompting anger and concern across the country and abroad. Several countries, including the US, have formally recognized Gonzalez as the country’s president-elect following the disputed election.

Deportation often hinges on diplomacy – and has been a steep challenge for the US when dealing with countries where there are frosty relations. Taken together, it’s a return to a hardline approach meant to get countries receiving deportees to comply and attempt to curb migration. But sources close to and involved in discussions argue they’ve identified the incentives and pressure points to have countries cooperate. The executive actions and reviews underway by the Trump team include the return of the program informally known as “remain in Mexico,” which requires migrants to stay in Mexico during their immigration proceedings in the US. “A second-term Trump administration will expand ‘burden-sharing’ deals with Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador that cut off pathways to the US for asylum-seekers.
