On the day President Biden’s career in national politics began in 1973, he walked up to a lectern set up in a Delaware hospital room while holding his 3-year-old son, Hunter, in his arms. Biden was there to take the oath to become a senator, a ceremony held at the hospital so his sons could be there. And, he suggested, if there was ever a “conflict between my being a good father and being a good senator,” he would step aside. It was an extraordinary move that came after he and his press secretary repeatedly insisted he would not pardon his son. It seemed to upend Biden’s attempts to portray himself as an institutionalist.

“In Arizona, and the United States, the people elected Joseph Biden as President on November 3, 2020,” the indictment reads. Prosecutors in Michigan, Georgia and Nevada also have brought criminal charges against some of the people who signed on as fake electors in those states. A grand jury empaneled in Maricopa County, Arizona, to investigate efforts to overturn the 2020 election results in the state met this week before Mayes announced the charges. The fake electors for Trump convened at the state Republican Party headquarters in Phoenix on December 14, 2020. But in the weeks that followed, some of the fake electors continued to push for Pence to reject the legitimate Democratic slate of electors.

As Biden tries to assert the success of his presidency, Manchin says he shaped “everything” in the president’s agenda. “It’s been far less organized than he expected it to be” and “he doesn’t see a plan coming together,” a person familiar with Hogan’s thinking told CNN. “No matter what side of the fence you might be on, where you are for philosophically, we learned to navigate that,” he told CNN.
