Harris’ campaign is also leveraging the endorsement of Taylor Swift, which could open a new seam of interest among the pop megastar’s loyal fanbase. The former president also Wednesday publicly toyed with the idea of a second debate, after the Harris campaign challenged him to another round. There’s a case for the vice president folding her tent given that she might not be able to repeat Tuesday’s performance. He weaved a dismissal of the Swift endorsement for Harris into a wider attack on the vice president on Fox News. The Trump campaign is sure to keep up its drumbeat of complaints that she’s avoiding deeper media scrutiny.

When Sundar Pichai, Google’s chief executive, introduced a generative artificial intelligence feature for the company’s search engine last month, he and his colleagues demonstrated the new capability with six text-based queries that the public could try out. The questions included “how do you clean a fabric sofa” and “what should I use to get a coffee stain out of my carpet.” These were intended to highlight how Google’s new feature, A.I. Overviews, could generate full and useful information summaries above traditional search results. But by Friday, only one of the six queries still yielded an A.I. Users loudly complained on social media about the mistakes, in many cases outright making fun of Google.

Google’s A.I. Search Errors Cause a Furor Online

Last week, Google unveiled its biggest change to search in years, showcasing new artificial intelligence capabilities that answer people’s questions in the company’s attempt to catch up to rivals Microsoft and OpenAI. The incorrect answers in the feature, called AI Overview, have undermined trust in a search engine that more than two billion people turn to for authoritative information. chatbots tell lies and act weird, the backlash demonstrated that Google is under more pressure to safely incorporate A.I. The launch also extends a pattern of Google’s having issues with its newest A.I. In February 2023, when Google announced Bard, a chatbot to battle ChatGPT, it shared incorrect information about outer space.

Allison Greenfield, principal law clerk in Trump's NY fraud case, is hoping to be elected judge. AdvertisementDonald Trump has attacked her as a biased "co-judge—" claiming she secretly runs the show at his New York civil fraud trial — but now principal law clerk Allison Greenfield is well on her way to becoming a judge in her own right. Last week, Greenfield cleared the biggest hurdle to the Manhattan civil judgeship she seeks, when local Democratic party leaders rated her "most highly qualified." "The trial clerk in Trump's civil fraud trial, Allison Greenfield, has been viciously targeted by the MAGA crowd with vile rhetoric and death threats," Levine wrote. Advertisement"When the judge speaks, you have to stop speaking," Greenfield told Trump attorney Alina Habba early on, during a 2022 pretrial hearing.

By now, you probably know a lot about George Santos, the congressman who scammed with abandon and made up almost everything. But the fact that he remains in Congress highlights something crucial about the people’s House. Even in that company, Mr. Santos stands out by exposing just how much craziness the Republican Party is willing to tolerate in pursuit of narrow partisan gains. The biographical lies and widely reported small-time hustles that boosted Mr. Santos pale in comparison with his penchant for “just throwing ideas.”I’m borrowing that phrase directly from Mr. Santos, who said it in a Spaces conversation on X, formerly Twitter, in October, shortly after Hamas’s terrorist attack on Israel. “I don’t care if we go into a police state for a couple of months.”

NEW YORK (AP) — Donald Trump isn’t used to constraints. Trump is not only a former president, but also the leading candidate for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination. Just days ago, he was fined $5,000 for violating the same gag order, which Engoron imposed after Trump targeted his principal law clerk on social media. Indeed, things are likely to get much more complicated for Trump in the coming months as his four criminal trials get underway. New York court officials have beefed up security for judges and court personnel involved in Trump matters in the wake of the threats.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump attends his Manhattan courthouse trial in a civil fraud case in New York, U.S., October 18, 2023. A judge laced into Donald Trump on Friday, floating the possibility of heavy sanctions or even jail time against the former president, over a "blatant violation" of a partial gag order in his $250 million New York fraud trial. Trump was not in court to hear the rebuke, having left New York on Wednesday after attending two more days of the civil trial. Engoron imposed a narrow gag order in the case earlier this month, after Trump sent a social media post attacking the judge's law clerk. "This is a blatant violation of the gag order.

Chesebro was the third of 19 codefendants in the Georgia case to make a deal, a monumental legal and personal blow to Trump, who highly prizes loyalty among his associates. Another former Trump lawyer, Sidney Powell, entered into a plea deal Thursday, following a September deal by a lesser-known bail bondsman, Scott Hall. While other defendants – especially Trump – have pushed for later trial dates, Chesebro insisted on his right to a speedy trial. Jury selection for his case started Friday, and Chesebro entered into the plea deal hours after potential jurors filed into the courthouse. The Chesebro deal could be the third domino to fall against Trump and other high-level defendants such as former Trump lawyer and New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani.

In a tight election, amid questionable economic conditions and with the normality that Biden promised in 2020 still fleeting, the threat may be greater than ever. A pseudo general election campaignBoth Trump and Biden showed up in Michigan courting blue-collar votes this week. He returned to the theme that democracy is under attack – seemingly a slam dunk given Trump’s week of autocratic outbursts and demagoguery. And all previous evidence suggests that, among GOP voters at least, Trump legal travails only boost his poll numbers and fundraising. To anyone who has forgotten the constant tearing at legal, political and constitutional norms that characterized almost every day of the last presidency, Gaetz and his fellow MAGA troops are proving that Trumpism sows chaos.

All artists teach their audience how to view them, by the way they tell jokes, their style, the level of absurdity. What makes Hasan Minhaj such a troubling example is that his style, onstage and often off in interviews, suggested we should believe him. Lying in comedy isn’t necessarily wrong. The problem with only considering the standard of emotional truth is that it can blind you to the impact on the actual world outside your emotions. You could say that the emotional truth behind the Patriot Act was that the terrorism of Sept. 11 required extreme tactics to feel safe, but that doesn’t make the legislation right.

CNN —Critics on Tuesday seized on the latest Trump tape as a perfect example of why the twice-impeached, twice-indicted former president is unfit to return to the Oval Office. On the audio – exclusively obtained by CNN – Trump discusses holding a secret document. In the tape, Trump seems to indicate he was holding up information that may be among the government’s most closely guarded secrets. As he often did in office, Trump appears to have been using US national security as a tool for his own personal or political gain. In response to the tape, Trump – as he often does – sought to redefine an apparent example of aberrant behavior as perfectly acceptable.

Ms. Friesdat and other activists like her fear that their work may become too closely tied to conspiracy theorists and Mr. Trump’s cause, making potential allies, like progressives, wary of joining the fight. “You sow a seed of doubt, and that will grow and fester into a conspiracy theory,” said Tim Weninger, a computer science professor at the University of Notre Dame who studies misinformation on social media. It is now happening in New York, where officials are considering certifying new voting machines made by Election Systems & Software, a manufacturer based in Omaha. To figure out what GPT-4 has read, they quizzed it on its knowledge of various books, as if it were a high-school English student. One way to answer the question is to look for information that could have come from only one place. Genre — sci-fi, mystery, romance, horror — is, broadly speaking, more interesting, partially because these books have plots where things actually happen. Bamman's GPT-4 list is a Borgesian library of episodic connections, cliffhangers, third-act complications, and characters taking arms against seas of troubles (and whales). See what a bot makes of Gene Wolfe's "The Book of the New Sun," maybe, or Sheri Tepper's "Grass."
A Ground Zero worker called on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to take action against Rep. George Santos. The worker, John Feal, called on House Speaker Kevin McCarthy to take action against Santos for the claim, one of a string of untruths which have unraveled since Santos took office. "Kevin McCarthy can easily fix this," he said. But immigration documents obtained by news organisations this week showed that Santos' mother told US authorities in 2003 that she had been in Brazil since 1999. McCarthy has said that Santos has the right to serve in Congress and has handed him committee assignments.
