"Making a movie with your own money is the most famous cardinal sin in Hollywood," Affleck says in an off-camera moment in the doc.
(Lopez and Affleck famously dated and got engaged in the early aughts, but broke up three days before their wedding.
"I did really find the beauty and the poetry and the irony in the fact that it's the greatest love story never told," Affleck says.
"If you're making a record about it, that seems kind of like telling it."
The movie wasn't about me," Affleck adds.
