Children born after 2010, Gen Alpha are the internet’s newest darlings. Gen Alpha’s hyper online manner of speaking has been dubbed “brainrot,” mostly by older Gen Zer’s who share spaces like TikTok with them. It evolves so quickly online.”With the new slang, Gen Alpha itself has gained a reputation. When older people try to use Gen Alpha slang, “It’s kind of embarrassing,” Beryl said. “Every single person throughout history has always complained about how the younger generations are ruining language with their made-up slang,” Aleksic said.

Why America hates its children
  + stars: | 2024-01-07 | by ( Lydia Kiesling | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +17 min
Time and again, I was struck by a public attitude toward children I seldom encountered in America: unequivocal support. In America, we socialize our children to see strangers not as helpers but as threats. Virtually every other industrialized nation provides more government aid for their children than America does. Children who are neglected — a loose term inextricably tied to poverty — are thrown into a foster-care system known for its propensity to harm children. From the tumult of the pandemic, the calls for America to care more for its children are getting louder.

A Walk in Rio de Janeiro: Along Fabled Beaches
  + stars: | 2023-06-19 | by ( Seth Kugel | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
For first-timers, a five-mile stroll along Copacabana and Ipanema beaches — Rio de Janeiro’s two most fabled sand parentheses — will stir up feelings even in those who have long and unironically listed “walks on the beach” as a favorite pastime. Such reactions may range from counterfactual nostalgia (“Imagine coming of age in a place like this”) to cultural aha moments (“Bossa nova makes so much sense now”) to medium-term reverie (“What are the rules on Brazil’s digital-nomad visa again?”). More than 20 visits in, I still turn some kind of emotional every time I return to Rio and set foot on the boardless boardwalk where the vast majority of this stroll takes place. Brazilians call such a beachfront sidewalk the “calçadão,” but forget pronouncing it and focus on its official sound: a thousand flip-flops slapping the wave-patterned Portuguese pavement.

Elon Musk claimed Twitter once had a Slack channel that was a fan club for Dr. Anthony Fauci. Musk's claim came after he slammed Fauci for his role as the White House's chief medical advisor. "Despite these glaring issues, Twitter nonetheless had an internal Slack channel unironically called "Fauci Fan Club"," Musk tweeted. Since Musk took over Twitter in late October, employees have been careful about what to post on the company's Slack. Platformer reported in November that some Twitter employees started removing Slack messages out of fear of Musk not liking the content.
My family has a Thanksgiving tradition. Countless people who don’t — or can’t (or both) — eat traditional Thanksgiving food such as turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and pumpkin pie will be the butt of the joke when families gather around the table on Thursday. Or what if the pumpkin pie is so good one slice isn’t enough? I’d love to start a new Thanksgiving tradition this year: sitting poolside in Palm Springs or getting sand between my toes as I hike at Malaga Cove would be great. I’ll be with my relatives and a punchline to a joke that never was funny, because that’s my family’s Thanksgiving tradition.
On Tuesday, Meta unveiled its latest effort in that mission, the Meta Quest Pro headset. But it costs $1,500 — nearly four times that of the company’s cheapest Quest 2 headset. Wages are up an estimated 5% this year in manufacturing — that’s not keeping up with inflation, but it is in line with the national average. “But by and large our manufacturing jobs today are high tech.”Bottom line: The labor story in America remains one where the narrative of recent history doesn’t quite hold. In most downturns, we’ve seen manufacturing decline, giving it a bad rap as a job that’s going extinct.
