Abandoned homesItalian village Patrica, located south of Rome, is struggling to offload its abandoned homes. Public callMany of the town's local families left in search of a brighter future elsewhere, leaving their homes empty for decades. Some of the houses are simply too neglected to sell, even if the owners were willing to agree to it. But the town’s ready-to-occupy homes, with two-bedroom properties starting at 20,000 euros ($21,832,) proved to be more appealing. “There is interest, but then when many (foreigners) actually see the bad shape of the old homes they’d prefer to opt for turn-key apartments that are already restyled or in need of just minor fixes,” says Grossi.

The sales led to an influx of tourists, remote workers, and investment, Toti Nigrelli added. AdvertisementIt all began with an enticing offer: homes in a picturesque Sicilian town for just one euro, barely more than a dollar. According to Mussomeli's deputy mayor, who helped launch the initiative in 2017, it sparked a total revitalization of the once-underpopulated town, attracting tourists, remote workers, and investment to the area. Toti Nigrelli told Business Insider in a documentary that before the program's implementation, Mussomeli faced major depopulation issues. Cost of living impactChris and Jennifer Tidroski purchased a €26,000 home in a building in the village of Latronico, Italy after becoming frustrated with life in the US. The couple say that the cost of living in the US has become too high, especially when it comes to healthcare. Chris explains that the political polarization in the US has been a contributing factor in their decision to relocate to Italy. Although the costs were slightly more than they estimated, the Tidroskis say they couldn’t have afforded a similar house in the US. While his mother was Italian, Chris’ father was Polish-Lithuanian.

The singers who played the couple became Treemonisha and her adoring friend, Remus, in the opera proper. More stylized — and effective, and relevant — was the conception, in an entirely different sound world than Joplin’s, by the Isango Ensemble. “We wanted to show quite clearly that if Monisha doesn’t take that child, that child is going to die,” Dornford-May said. With the poverty in the townships — life expectancy of 49, TB rife, H.I.V. rife — with that sense of poverty, disease and death hanging over people, to take in another mouth to feed is extraordinary.”

Tokyo CNN —Japan is offering to pay families to move out of its overcrowded capital, in an effort to revitalize countryside towns and boost the falling birth rate. But this migration pattern, combined with Japan’s rapidly aging population, has left rural towns with fewer and fewer residents, as well as millions of unoccupied homes. Tokyo is consistently one of the world’s most expensive cities to live in, ranking fifth globally in 2022. For example, Tokyo has the lowest fertility rate of all 47 prefectures in Japan. Some rural towns have even begun paying couples who live there to have children.
Vindman first joined Twitter while working in the Trump administration because it was often the way his then-boss, the president, made policy. His wife, liberal activist and podcaster Rachel Vindman, has almost 400,000 followers, making them a progressive Twitter power couple. In a clubby city obsessed with status and information, Twitter delivers both, all from the comfort of one’s mobile phone. No one wants to leave Twitter until everyone else does, but there’s no obvious place to go next. Some think Musk will kill Twitter regardless of whether there’s a mass exodus of its users.
In the 2099 London imagined by “The Peripheral,” the Gherkin, the Eye and the Strand have all survived. So has kitsch: A 1,000-foot Venus de Milo shadows Big Ben. (“Winged Victory” is elsewhere, along with gargantuan versions of the Discobolus of Myron and the David of Michelangelo). Some institutions seem to have simply vanished: You can rent out Buckingham Palace for company parties, if you can assemble enough humans for a party. Whatever has gone on since the year 2032, it hasn’t been good.
