The Education Department is assuring schools and students that its financial aid process is under control, after a botched overhaul over the past year that some colleges say has dented incoming classes. Education Secretary Miguel Cardona has vowed that the FAFSA process is being improved after recent missteps. I want to close up [the] Department of Education, move education back to the states. In May, Cardona announced a “full-scale review” of the Federal Student Aid office that oversees FAFSA and promised “transformational changes” at the division. The on-cycle recruiting process is not easy on these young bankers, who are often already working 80+ hour weeks in their new investment-banking jobs. The conventional wisdom on Wall Street has always been that the most hawkish PE firms walk away with the most impressive candidates. Odyssey doesn't participate in on-cycle recruiting because it prefers to fill positions in what is known as "off-cycle," or the months that follow the initial recruiting process. My parents didn’t go to college, but they saved up so that their children could, and in 1975 I arrived with enthusiasm and some trepidation for my first year at Wesleyan University. At that time, my image of college students was that of young people demanding rights while chanting slogans and holding up protest signs. I had no idea that commentators were already lamenting that my generation of undergrads was so much less focused on politics and the public sphere and that we were “grinds” working away to climb the meritocratic ladder. For me, there was no ladder; being a student was about rebellion and freedom.

Many of today's college undergrads have gone through school knowing student loan payments were on pause indefinitely and the prospect of widespread cancelation was closer to becoming reality than ever. Just over half of next year's college graduates expect to carry student loan debt, and within that group, almost 70% say their debt will influence the jobs they consider after graduation, according to Handshake's latest report that surveyed 1,148 students in the class of 2024. A remaining 17% of students said their college debt would not impact their career choices after school, and 14% said they are neutral on the matter. As a result, many students say finding a job with a high salary and with a company that offers attractive benefits, like student loan repayment benefits, are all "top of mind," Williams tells CNBC Make It. Young workers with debt also want flexibility in where and when they work, though many say it goes beyond the matter of preference.

The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is a charitable vehicle for the wealthy couple. The charitable foundation of Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan conducted its first layoff this week. The cuts at the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative impacted 48 employees, according to two people familiar with the company. Over at Meta, employees there have dealt with layoffs since November, as the company looked to reduce costs in the face of slowing revenue growth and massive expenses on Zuckerberg's metaverse ambitions. It seems that mandate has made its way over to the CEO's charitable initiative as well.

UNC said it would soon offer free tuition to in-state undergrads whose families earn less than $80,000. The policy change is set to begin with students who will enter the university in the fall of 2024. UNC announced the plan after the Supreme Court struck down the use of affirmative action in admissions. "We will expand the university's long-standing commitment to access and affordability for North Carolina families," he said. In the class of 2026, which entered the university last fall, 49% of the students were North Carolina natives, and 32% received need-based financial aid.

As Gen Zers gain ground in the labor force, it's likely those values will flow through other generations of workers, too.
