Leonardo Munoz | View Press | Corbis News | Getty ImagesThe domestic box office is on the rebound, having posted its highest third-quarter ticket sales since the pandemic. AMC operates around 900 theaters and 10,000 screens globally, a larger footprint than its chief rivals Cinemark and Regal. By the time the Covid pandemic shuttered theaters and shut down Hollywood, AMC was already $5 billion in the red. Despite the better-than-expected box office performance, AMC saw a 12% decline in attendance during the period. "They talked a lot about new investments and upgrading their theaters and expanding their premium screens, adding XL screens.

CNN —More severe weather is expected in the South and the Southern Plains Monday, including in Oklahoma, where residents are surveying the destruction from tornado-spawning storms that injured at least 11 people and leveled homes over the weekend. Tornado sirens rang out Monday morning in Oklahoma City, where residents are still surrounded by the destruction and debris caused by the weekend’s severe storms, after the National Weather Service issued a tornado warning. There were no confirmed tornadoes or reports of damage from Monday morning’s storms. A level 2 of 5 threat of severe thunderstorms spans from central and eastern Texas to the Illinois-Missouri border – including Dallas, threatening damaging wind gusts, large hail and tornadoes, according to the SPC. Nearly 40 structures were destroyed in the Oklahoma City area, the Oklahoma City Fire Department said in a Facebook post.

Comcast beat third-quarter earning expectations on Thursday, as the Summer Olympics in Paris boosted NBCUniversal's revenue and Peacock's subscriber count. The company's revenue rose 6.5% to $32.07 billion compared to the same period last year. Overall revenue was boosted by the Summer Olympics in Paris, which NBCUniversal exclusively broadcast in the U.S., and domestic broadband revenue — despite continued slowing customer growth. Revenue for the media segment – mainly comprised of NBCUniversal – was up nearly 37% to $8.23 billion, largely due to the Olympics. The company's film studios, also part of the content and experiences segment, saw revenue increase 12.3% to $2.83 billion compared to the prior year.

The Summary The tornado outbreak that Hurricane Milton spawned in Florida was a leading cause of death and damage from the storm. Hurricane Milton brought an earlier-than-expected dose of chaos before it made landfall this week, as supercell thunderstorms — which feature rotating updrafts and can produce tornadoes — raced across the state. From 1995 through 2023, just five tornadoes produced by tropical storms were rated that high. “With the initial tornadoes, that particular band of showers and storms from Milton seemed to really eject pretty far out in front of the hurricane,” Gallus said. That’s how it played out during Milton, Gallus said: The twisters “occurred right where we see most tornadoes happen.”But in Milton’s case, he noted, the tornadoes were particularly concentrated.

The 2024 box office has been inundated with sequels, prequels and remakes, with the top 10 titles of the year all coming from existing intellectual property. Looking at the current 2025 calendar, between 50% and 70% of the movies from the six major studios — Universal , Disney , Warner Bros. , Paramount , Sony and Lionsgate — will be related to existing IP. Craig T Fruchtman | Getty Images Entertainment | Getty ImagesEven before Hollywood was disrupted by the pandemic and the meteoric rise of streaming content, the domestic box office was heavily reliant on franchise titles. While that's a 11.3% drop from last year and lags 25% behind pre-pandemic levels, the haul is better than box office analysts had expected. "Some of the most well-received box office hits in recent memory have been sequels or films based on existing brands and there is still a variety of original content out there."

Thanks to some anthropomorphic emotions and a bad-mouthed, fourth-wall breaking antihero, the domestic summer box office scraped together $3.6 billion in ticket sales. Box office analysts and cinema owners braced themselves a few months ago for the possibility that the summer movie season could be the worst showing in a decade. But it wasn't until mid-June that the box office got a proper surge of moviegoers. Through Labor Day, the film was the highest-grossing summer movie with $650 million in box office receipts. Box office analysts foresee the summer's momentum carrying over into the fall, ultimately bolstering the overall third-quarter box office results.

This is the first installment of Visual Studies, a series that explores how images move through and shape culture. I consider the white T-shirt to be a star maker. Whether it’s on Marlon Brando or James Dean, Glenn Close or Glen Powell, we’ve seen how a white T-shirt at just the right moment can burn its way into an audience’s memory — as happened this summer when a showstopping scene featuring Mr. Powell in a wet white T-shirt in “Twisters” became a sensation. What’s more, the white T-shirt onscreen and on celebrities has become a symbol of how Americans want to imagine ourselves: unfussy, hardworking, laid-back and egalitarian.

“Deadpool & Wolverine” is dominating the charts again after earning $28.3 million on Friday. Rivals are putting the Disney release at a 55% drop though, demonstrating that “Deadpool & Wolverine” has immense appeal beyond Marvel diehards. “Deadpool & Wolverine” looks to blast past that figure in only in its second weekend and there’s no real signs of slowing down after that. Universal also has another top five slot with “Despicable Me 4,” still drawing a crowd in its fifth weekend of release. Total domestic gross surpassed $300 million earlier this week — one of only three titles this year to notch that milestone.

So far Nashville has mostly escaped the historic heat that keeps enveloping this country in waves of misery. We have also been spared the kind of severe weather that is the bread and butter of summer disaster movies. People seek escapist fare like “Twisters” in part to experience imaginatively the kind of danger that hasn’t reached them in ordinary life. The first grown-up movie I ever saw in a theater was “The Towering Inferno,” but I’m not normally one for disaster movies. I wanted to see “Twisters” because I was curious about how it addresses climate change.

New York CNN —“Deadpool & Wolverine” barreled through the $200 million benchmark, cementing the blockbuster as the record holder for the highest grossing opening weekend for an R-rated movie. “Deadpool & Wolverine” is now also among the top opening weekends ever, ranking at No. Could “Deadpool & Wolverine” reinvigorate the franchise? But less than three weeks after its release, the year-over-year domestic box office revenue deficit shrunk from 27% to 19%. Now, the deficit stands at 16.9% and it could keep shrinking depending on how “Deadpool & Wolverine” finishes its run in theaters.

For nearly two decades, Hollywood has seemingly missed no opportunity to sound the alarm about climate change. So it was startling when the weather-focused “Twisters” arrived from Universal Pictures this month with no mention of climate change at all. If ever there was a perfect vehicle to carry Hollywood’s progressive climate change messaging — a big-budget movie about people caught in worsening storm patterns — wasn’t this it? Apparently not. Movies should not be about “preaching a message,” Lee Isaac Chung, who directed “Twisters,” said in a prerelease interview that served as a dog whistle to conservative ticket buyers.

“This would rank among the top 10 openings of all-time and marks the sixth-highest Friday ever reported at the box office,” said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. An over-performing box office makes a comebackAlthough the summer box office was off to a sputtering start after a tepid spring, there have been several blockbusters invigorating the industry. But less than three weeks after its release, the year-over-year domestic box office revenue deficit shrunk from 27% to 19%. Now, the deficit stands at 16.9% and it could keep shrinking depending on how “Deadpool & Wolverine” performs. Although analysts are predicting a more lukewarm total for 2024, the successful summer movie slate is positioning the industry to further close the gap.

First you get the aroma of the meadowlands. Then, a vision of an Oklahoma prairie fills the screen and, as the grass undulates, a soft breeze wafts over you and your seat sways. These sights, sounds, feelings and scents open a 4D presentation of the tornado thriller “Twisters.” For the past decade and a half, companies like CJ 4DPlex have turned splashing and shaking moviegoers into an art, fine-tuning their instruments to lure fans into theaters. Carefully tracking through each scene, they look for moments to heighten the experience in a way that adds meaning without distracting from the narrative. In a typical 4D presentation, audiences pay on average $8 more than the price of a regular ticket to sit in pods of four chairs that can pitch and tilt subtly or with extreme force, using technology first developed for military flight simulators.

AMC Entertainment on Wednesday warned investors of declines in key metrics during the second quarter, sending its shares down more than 7%. It also said it expects to post a net loss of $32.8 million compared with a profit of $8.6 million in the second quarter of 2023. "This explains the weakness in our preliminary Q2 2024 results, as contrasted with the same quarter of a year ago." "But if looking only at the full quarter, the lay observer might easily miss the incredibly good news that transpired within the second quarter," Aron said. "This in turn suggests that AMC should enjoy increasing adjusted EBITDA, if as and when overall industry revenues are climbing.
