PARIS — It’s 1:00 a.m. on the banks of the Canal de Saint-Denis and the 2024 Paris Olympics closing ceremony finished an hour ago. But the political and social turmoil France faced before a ghostly metal horse galloped down the Seine has not gone away. French President Emmanuel Macron at the Paris Olympic Games. The French president could easily have been giving his view on France’s immediate political future when discussing the rain-drenched opening ceremony with NBC News. Optimism aside, analysts believe the country faces years of deadlock that could end with a far-right president in 2027.

Ed Eyestone is not one for hyperbole. A cleareyed coach and two-time Olympian, he will casually describe his athletes’ 23-mile training runs in a way that makes it sound as if they had gone for brisk walks. He understands that hard training is a part of the profession and that marathons are inherently challenging, so why oversell the struggle? But ask him about the marathon course at the Paris Olympics, and Eyestone speaks with a sort of reverence that borders on fear. “This marathon,” he said, “will have a debris field in the final miles.”Over the past two weeks, thousands of Olympians have tackled the seemingly impossible.

CNN —Despite two athletes falling ill and an ongoing controversy around water quality in the River Seine in the run-up to the race, the mixed relay triathlon went ahead on Monday with Germany securing a dramatic gold medal in Paris. Both the men’s and women’s races eventually got underway on Wednesday, but the fallout has continued ahead of the mixed relay. Paris CNN —Belgium has withdrawn from the mixed relay triathlon race on Monday and Switzerland has had to mix up its roster after athletes from both countries fell ill following the initial triathlon races last week. The statement did not specify Michel’s illness, which was reported days after she swam in the River Seine during the women’s triathlon on Wednesday. “Claire Michel, a member of the relay, is unfortunately ill and must withdraw from the competition.”Michel finished 38th in the women’s triathlon competition on Wednesday. Swiss Olympic Chief Medical Officer Hanspeter Betschart noted that it is unclear if Briffod’s infection is related to the Seine’s water quality. The athletes had largely put their trust in organizers to ensure that the water quality was safe for them.

The promise was they would swim in the Seine. So far this year, no Olympian has been able to do so. After the heavy rains on the weekend, swimming officials at the Paris Games have canceled both familiarization swims for triathletes eager to try out the river before the men’s and women’s individual events set for this week. Each time, poor water quality levels were blamed. “We are confident we will be able to hold the competition tomorrow,” Etienne Thobois, the chief executive of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, said at a news conference on Monday.

Being a veteran world-class swimmer — and cyclist, and runner — Taylor Spivey has dealt with worse than Paris’ River Seine. (Bertrand Guay / AFP via Getty Images)Standards for water quality differ in Europe than in the United States. “And that can be associated, on one hand, with the clement weather, dry weather. To sort out my smartwatch health and fitness questions, I spoke with CNN wellness expert Dr. Leana Wen. A smartwatch with a heart rate monitor can help athletes track their heart rates to keep them in a certain range. Wen: What a lot of active people do is to track heart rate during exercise to keep the heart rate in a certain range. This is where the heart rate is under 70% to 75% of your maximal heart rate. Many smartwatches track sleep and can tell you how long you’ve slept and how much time you spent in each sleep stage.

Fluidion’s testing has found that, on average, E. Coli levels in the Siene between early April and late May were just under 3400 MPN/100mL. The highest E. Coli levels recorded by Fluidion were 23590 MPN/100mL on May 2 and 13090 MPN/100mL on May 30, according to Angelescu. But if poor water quality persisted, the triathlon would have to be downgraded to a duathlon with no swimming, the organization confirmed. Angelescu said that “significant infrastructure projects” by the city of Paris designed to improve water quality will have a “substantial” impact. PARIS, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Olympic triathletes tested swimming in the Seine in Paris on Wednesday, 10 days after heavy rainfall caused the water quality to dip below minimum health standards and forced the cancellation of another open water competition. The Seine is in the spotlight as the river - where swimming has long been banned - is due to be the venue for marathon swimming at next year's Olympic Games. Blummenfelt and others were jumping in to get used to the course and the currents before an official Paris 2024 test event scheduled for Thursday. Bathing in the Seine has been banned since 1923, with promises to restore water quality going back to 1990, when Paris mayor Jacques Chirac - later French president - vowed to make the Seine safe for swimming again. "It's obvious that extra work is required with Paris 2024 and local authorities to guarantee solid emergency plans are set up for next year," said World Aquatics. The Olympics committee said in a separate statement that new infrastructure would be up and running by summer 2024, which should ensure better water quality and make the Seine swimmable. "For Paris 2024 and World Triathlon, the health and safety of athletes is our top priority," the sport's governing body said in a statement. On Thursday, the Guardian reported that at least 57 participants fell ill after competing in sea swimming events at the World Triathlon Championship Series in Sunderland, England.

CNN —It has been described as one of the most incredible moments in sports, brothers-in-arms at the end of a grueling triathlon race in Cozumel, Mexico. In September 2016, over what were the last 400 yards of the season, triathlete Alistair Brownlee rounded a bend to find his younger brother Jonny in considerable medical distress. For the small, insular world of triathlon, it has been a week. EPO stimulates the production of red blood cells, which helps the body transport oxygen, ultimately increasing stamina. For years in professional cycling, it was about as common as saddle sores. Also, after more than two decades of doping scandals in nearly every sport, from track and field to baseball, most athletes, sports officials and fans have come to react to the latest positive test in the manner of Captain Renault entering Rick’s Cafe in “Casablanca.”“I’m shocked! “It’s really blown up the sport,” said Dan Plews, who coaches several elite triathletes, including Chelsea Sodaro, the reigning Ironman world champion.
Rich business executives pay up to $16,200 to compete in the Ironman XC challenge. "I'm sure you have noticed we are spoiled kids," one of the athletes told the NYT. Ironman XC, short for Ironman Executive Challenge, is an exclusive track within the competitive Ironman triathlons, in which participants swim 2.4 miles, run 26.2 miles, and bike 112 miles. XC athletes often get top accommodations close to the race start, which makes the early morning take off easier. Many of the business executives told the Times they were drawn to the mental and physical challenges the race provides.
