AdvertisementA few months ago, I started using an AI notetaking app, Granola, in meetings. A few minutes after I'd hopped on a call with a tech founder, he mentioned that he'd started using an "amazing" AI notetaking app. AdvertisementI've been using Granola since midsummer, and it's changed my meetings. In fact, given the whac-a-mole way many of us work — quickly triaging the messages that bombard us throughout the day — AI notetaking apps could have our back. That's notable, in part, because in a recent survey, 57% of Granola users reported being in leadership roles.

I realized I needed to take pictures and document and little videos because nobody would believe it unless I did. I started a WhatsApp group where I shared reflections and stories almost like a diary or journal entry. The capacity of the hospital was supposed to be between 150 and 200 people, and there were 700 patients in that hospital. Today Deir al Balah, the area I’m in, was bombed, resulting in a massive mass casualty event at the hospital. A little girl lay on a cardboard box.

In the mifepristone case, Kacsmaryk’s initial ruling was notable not just for its sweeping nature but in how he embraced the anti-abortion movement’s sensational rhetoric about the procedure. The groups fighting mifepristone argue that the Supreme Court’s decision shouldn’t affect the states’ ability to sue. Both the FDA and several medical groups, including the American Medical Association, told the Supreme Court that mifepristone is safe. But the Supreme Court knocked that argument aside, noting that federal law already allows doctors to avoid performing procedures that violate their conscience. Adam Unikowsky, a veteran Supreme Court litigator who has closely followed the mifepristone case, predicted it will be hard for the states to get the issue back before the Supreme Court.

As those bans helped propel the demand for medication abortion, mifepristone became a logical target for the anti-abortion movement. None of those lower court rulings went into effect because the Supreme Court intervened last year and ordered that the status quo around mifepristone remain in place until the justices reviewed the case. The Supreme Court heard arguments in March. Both the FDA and several medical groups, including the American Medical Association, told the Supreme Court that mifepristone is safe. The mifepristone appeal was one of two abortion cases the high court was considering this month.

Jones was noodling with Copilot Designer, the AI image generator that Microsoft debuted in March 2023, powered by OpenAI's technology. CNN —Irreplaceable art works by Picasso, Rembrandt, Goya and M.C. Escher are among those feared lost after a fire swept through a Seattle art gallery on Friday, the gallery’s manager told CNN. Davidson Galleries specializes in works on paper – specifically etchings, lithographs and wood cuts, owner Sam Davidson told CNN. In the aftermath of the fire, firefighters and artists alike gathered to help move the art works. “It’s the wonderful part of the art community, that they come together when there’s a need,” Davidson told CNN affiliate Kiro 7.

Congress now appears likely to avoid a government shutdown this week. The White House even weighed in over the weekend before House Democrats started to warm up to Johnson's plan. Republican Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas didn't stop Obamacare. And Republican Sen. Rand Paul's colleagues tore into him after he forced a brief shutdown in 2018. As I was writing this story about how Johnson's plan is the dumbest thing Congress has done, Sen. Bernie Sanders had to stop one of his colleagues from throwing down with a union boss.

Fatima Shbair/APHowever, modern urban warfare sets new records of ruination because more than half of us live in built-up areas. This is not illegal under the UN Charter but the concept of ’just’ war in international law requires protecting non-combatants. In urban war, fighters and civilians intermingleOften, the frontlines of urban conflicts cannot be clearly demarcated when fighters and civilians are intermingled. War has changed since the Geneva ConventionsThese new-style warriors were unknown when the Geneva Conventions emerged over a century ago. That violates international humanitarian law and is contrary to a UN political declaration on explosive weapons in populated areas.

By Jennifer RigbyLONDON (Reuters) - Dengue fever will become a major threat in the southern United States, southern Europe and new parts of Africa this decade, the WHO's chief scientist said, as warmer temperatures create the conditions for the mosquitoes carrying the infection to spread. Many cases go unrecorded, but in 2022 4.2 million cases were reported worldwide and public health officials have warned that near-record levels of transmission are expected this year. Earlier this week, the WHO recommended Takeda Pharmaceuticals' Qdenga vaccine for children aged 6 to 16 in areas where the infection is a significant public health problem. Qdenga is also approved by the EU regulator, but Takeda withdrew its application in the United States earlier this year, citing data collection issues. Dengue is spread by infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which behave differently to the malaria-carrying kind.

These technology failures during a major scaling event — dubbed success disasters — weren't alone. Ticketmaster's failure during their scaling event was just one kind of success disaster — the overburdening of the system's capacity. Success disasters may be common, but that doesn't make them acceptable, especially if a company is offering products or services considered essential. The right answer really depends on the starting point and what scaling events are anticipated. Even on a smaller (but still substantial) scale, Urban keeps this in mind to avoid her own success disaster.

Opinion | Why Platonic Friendships Are So Hard to Keep
  + stars: | 2023-07-01 | by ( Jessica Grose | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
It wasn’t until watching the show that I realized that all the close male friendships I had in my 20s have sort of fallen away. My husband has similar relationships to his opposite-sex friends. Part of this perception is because opposite-sex friendships are so new, historically speaking. As William Deresiewicz wrote in an essay for Times Opinion in 2012, “Friendship between the sexes was more or less unknown in traditional society. But part of the perception that there might be something untoward going to between heterosexual, opposite-sex friends is grounded in psychological reality.

Should you check email on vacation or face a tsunami of messages once you're back at the office? An 'email intervention'Robinson launched an "Email Intervention Campaign" earlier this month to deal with issues like "vacation email panic," he told CNBC Travel. "I encounter tons of people who are burned out from email," said work-life speaker and consultant Joe Robinson. Robinson advises companies to create defined email policies, ideally ones which give workers permission not to check email on vacation. Don't respond (if you don't have to) Emails proliferate like rabbits, said Joe Robinson.
Victoria Repa is the CEO of BetterMe, a health-and-wellness platform in Ukraine. This article is part of "Small Business Strong," a series highlighting the resilient work of small-business leaders to overcome barriers and reach success. I expected to face a lot of challenges as a business leader, but a full-scale war wasn't one of them. On February 24, 2022, I woke up to a dreadful new reality for my Kyiv-based company: Russia had invaded our country. But part of that was also because I shifted our mission from just succeeding as a company to helping Ukraine succeed as a country.
By Shannon Stapleton and Vladyslav SmilianetsDONETSK FRONT LINE, Dec 23 (Reuters) - "Take the chest guy," barked volunteer U.S. nurse Jennifer Mullee as shells exploded close to the Donetsk front line, triaging wounded Ukrainian soldiers before taking time to relay a personal warning to Russian President Vladimir Putin. As a member of the Pirogov First Volunteer Mobile Hospital, she's been helping to save Ukrainian lives there ever since. Deployed twice as a nurse and doctor in Afghanistan, Mullee comes from a military family. "I pray that he is brought to justice for these ...horrible atrocities," she said. "But I'm confident that if he does not find justice in this life, he will be held accountable in his afterlife because Jesus is pissed off at him and he's coming for you, Putin, he's coming."
