Democrat Derek Tran has defeated Republican incumbent Michelle Steel for a House seat representing California’s Orange County and Los Angeles, NBC News projects, after a contentious race that centered on the candidates’ Asian American identities and use of aggressive anti-China messaging. Tran has performed better with voters in Los Angeles County, where he has had a significant lead over Steel. But the race is tighter in Orange County, the bulk of the district, where voters have repeatedly flipped between red and blue over the past election cycles. She previously served as a supervisor and chairwoman of the Orange County Board of Supervisors before running for Congress. Don Luong, a history teacher and longtime Orange County voter, said the back-and-forth has distracted from the candidates’ actual platforms.

With Election Day around the corner, there's been just shy of $1 billion spent on political ads up and down the ballot in the last week, data from the ad-tracking firm AdImpact shows. The most expensive race over the last week is, unsurprisingly, the presidential race, where more than $272 million has been spent on ads, according to data from AdImpact. There's been more than $267 million spent on ads in down-ballot races, meaning all of the other races outside of races for president, governor and Congress. One other down-ballot race saw more than $10 million in ad spending over the last week: California's referendum on rent control. Governors races have had just $18 million in ad spending in the last week, thanks to a relative lack of competitive races this cycle.

CNN —Authorities are investigating after at least two ballot boxes were set on fire Monday morning in the Portland, Oregon, area. Police responded to a call about a fire in Portland about 3:30 a.m. Monday, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement. An “incendiary device” was placed inside the box and security personnel extinguished the fire, officials said. A second ballot box was set on fire early Monday morning at a bus station in nearby Vancouver, Washington, according to the Vancouver Police Department. Liam Payne's One Direction bandmates are "completely devastated" by his death, they said in a statement on the boy band's Instagram account Thursday, one day after Payne's death at an Argentina hotel. Sistema de Atencion Medica de Emergencia (SAME), the emergency health service, said that Payne fell from the balcony in Palermo. Police were called to the hotel for reports of an aggressive man, according to the emergency services agency, which later confirmed Payne's death. The office added that the autopsy findings indicate Payne "could have fallen in a state of semi or total unconsciousness." A number of substances were found in Payne's hotel room, the prosecutor's office said in a statement, which would prove alcohol and drug consumption.
