The U.S. Department of the Treasury and IRS on Friday released final tax reporting rules for digital asset brokers — and crypto investors have limited time to prepare, experts say. Mandatory yearly reporting will phase in starting in 2026, with digital currency brokers required to cover gross proceeds from sales in 2025 via Form 1099-DA. In 2027, brokers must include cost basis, or purchase price, for certain digital asset sales for 2026. "These regulations are an important part of the larger effort on high-income individual tax compliance," IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said in a statement. The new IRS regulations come roughly four months after the agency hired two former crypto executives to improve digital currency service, reporting, compliance and enforcement programs.

"Real" earnings measure the net growth in workers' wages after inflation. The trend of growth in annual real earnings has persisted since May 2023, according to BLS data. That marks a reversal from April 2021 to April 2023, when inflation spiked and eclipsed growth in the average worker's paycheck. That month, the average worker saw their pay growth spike to about 6% annually. "This is good news for consumers," since it generally equates to an increase in their well-being over time, he added.

IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel testifies before the Senate Finance Committee on April 19, 2023. The tax gap, or the difference between taxes owed and paid, was an estimated $688 billion for tax year 2021, the IRS reported in October. Instead, profits flow through to the business owners' tax returns. Other 'red flags' for higher earnersIn addition to complex partnerships, the IRS is watching for other "red flags" from higher earners, according to Hylton. Another area of for increased audits could be estate and gift tax returns, particularly those using "aggressive valuation discounts" for assets, Hylton said.

Cboe declined to say whether those relations happened while Tilly was CEO or prior to his tenure at the helm. His resignation is the latest in a string of high-profile exits by CEOs whose personal conduct ran afoul of company policy. "When he became CEO, he grew that business from a little options exchange to a global, fintech and exchange leader. Cboe has exclusive rights to list flagship contracts linked to the Standard & Poor’s 500 stock index through 2032. Cboe Global Markets Chief Executive Officer Edward Tilly has resigned after failing to disclose personal relationships with colleagues, the exchange operator said on Tuesday. Board member Fredric Tomczyk has been named CEO, effective immediately, Cboe said. Tilly, who was Cboe's chief for more than 10 years, resigned following the conclusion of an investigation led by the board and outside independent counsel that was launched in late August, the company said. "The Board of Directors determined that Tilly did not disclose personal relationships with colleagues, which violated Cboe's policies and stands in stark contrast to the company's values," the statement said. Tomczyk, who joined Cboe's board in July 2019, has previously served as CEO of TD Ameritrade Holding Corp.

The difficulty of this achievement also shows the resilience of the country’s chip technological ability," TechInsights analyst Dan Hutcheson said. EUV refers to extreme ultraviolet lithography and is used to make 7 nm or more advanced chips. LIMITED ACHIEVEMENTThe most advanced chip SMIC had previously been known for making was 14nm, as it was barred by Washington in late 2020 from obtaining an EUV machine from Dutch firm ASML (ASML.AS). But TechInsights last year said it believed SMIC had managed to produce 7 nm chips by tweaking simpler DUV machines it could still purchase freely from ASML. Jefferies analysts reckon Huawei is preparing to ship ten million units of the Mate 60 Pro, though it may struggle to support that quantity with China-made 7 nm chips.

It's a sophisticated trading strategy that's becoming more accessible to retail investors. The strategy: Zero days-to-expiration options — which is essentially a one-day bet on the direction of the markets. Zero days-to-expiration options are contracts that expire the same day they're traded. Tilly believes these options are appealing to investors by allowing them to invest at the shortest duration of time left in a contract. "At the end of the trading day, the next result of that trade is settled in cash — not physically delivered like a stock or an ETF," he said.

As applications for a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund head to the SEC for review, cryptocurrency experts remain cautious as to whether proposed surveillance-sharing agreements will be the key to the approval process. "We'll keep giving more information to our regulators," Cboe CEO Ed Tilly told CNBC's Bob Pisani on "ETF Edge" on Monday. Cboe has several applications for bitcoin ETFs to list on its exchange, including funds from WisdomTree, VanEck and Ark. This week the Securities and Exchange Commission acknowledged submissions from several firms including VanEck and WisdomTree, with those proposals appearing Wednesday on the Federal Register. "I just think it's a bad ruling, but we'll ultimately see how that plays out," he said.

Main Street could find itself stuck in gridlock next year in terms of advancing pro-business tax objectives. For House Republicans, legislative priorities are likely to include extending business-friendly provisions of The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, passed by the Trump Administration in 2017. Even so, a divided Congress means that major pro-business legislative changes will be difficult to enact. Rather, tax and policy professionals expect House Republicans to focus on a number of positioning moves next year — ones that will establish their pro-business agenda ahead of the 2024 presidential election. "There are a host of provisions in the tax code that businesses would like to see changed or revised," said Rochelle Hodes, a principal in Crowe's Washington National Tax office.
It’s a seemingly simple calculation, but supply-chain experts caution that shipping from stores can be more challenging than filling orders at fulfillment centers that are set up for the job. It now packages orders at 116 of its approximately 1,350 stores, said Amiee Bayer-Thomas, the company’s chief supply chain officer. The chain said it has converted areas in 35 stores to serve as semi-automated miniature distribution centers. That is one reason department store Nordstrom is pulling back on shipping orders from stores for its discount brand Nordstrom Rack. The company will continue using Nordstrom stores to fulfill online orders for that brand.
