Interest in so-called “golden visas” has skyrocketed among US citizens since the election, according to consultants that help the wealthy migrate. Golden visas allow people to effectively buy foreign citizenship or residence through sizable investments, including in real estate, government bonds or startups. Jc Milhet/Hans Lucas/AFP/Getty ImagesInquiries about golden visas from Americans have increased 33% so far this year compared with the same period last year, with programs in Europe the most sought after. Portugal’s Golden Residence Permit Program tops the popularity list because it is relatively affordable, requiring a minimum outlay of €250,000 ($265,000) in support of the arts or national cultural heritage. With golden visas out of reach for most Americans, social media platforms are ablaze with chatter about other avenues for moving abroad.

"However, I think that the market right now has priced in a full extension of the voluntary cuts. Since the Oct. 7 Hamas attacks in Israel and the outbreak of the war in Gaza, attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinians in the West Bank have doubled, the United Nations says. Photo: thomas coex/Agence France-Presse/Getty ImagesWASHINGTON—The Biden administration is set to restrict travel to the U.S. by extremist Israeli settlers and others it holds responsible for undermining security in the West Bank. The decision, announced Tuesday by Secretary of State Antony Blinken , comes in response to rising tension in the West Bank and a spike in clashes between Israeli settlers and Palestinian civilians in the aftermath of Hamas’s deadly attack on Oct. 7. The statement didn’t specify that Israeli settlers in particular would be targeted by the visa restrictions, instead describing “individuals believed to have been involved in undermining peace, security, or stability in the West Bank.” The statement also indicates the restrictions could apply to Palestinians who attack Israelis.

And there are now concerns that more fronts will open in the war, including one with Iran. Management consultancies helped design vaccination programs during the pandemic and are currently providing advice on how to rescue one of the world’s biggest banks. The $230 billion management consulting industry is a broad church: it includes companies offering everything from project management expertise to designing new organizational structures. Many big firms — think EY and KPMG — also conduct audits and advise on their clients’ tax issues, though these services are generally seen as distinct from their consulting work. In The Big Con, published in February, prize-winning economist Mariana Mazzucato and her co-author Rosie Collington argue that management consultancies “infantilize” governments by keeping them dependent on their services. Nearly 80% of firms surveyed globally have told the think-tank that consultants’ work is either of high or very high quality, she noted.

The world's fastest trains -- from China to France

Chogo/Xinhua/Getty ImagesAs well as boasting the longest network of high-speed lines in the world, China now has the fastest scheduled trains on the planet. A statement of intent by China’s booming railway technology industry, the Fuxing trains have been developed from previous generations of high-speed trains, which were based on technology imported from Europe and Japan. The design also forms the basis of the Siemens “Velaro” family of high-speed trains, which has been sold to Spain, Russia, Turkey, China and to Eurostar for its second generation international trains. Europe’s first dedicated high-speed network is still its best known and most successful, reaching out well beyond France’s borders. Frecciarossa services operate across Italy’s T-shaped high-speed network, linking Turin, Milan and Venice in the north with Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples.
