New York CNN —At the heart of the Boeing strike that began Friday is a story about what happens when penny-pinching executives lose the plot and it falls to workers to get everyone back on track. If Boeing were any other business — and not a too-big-fail half of a global duopoly — it almost certainly would have declared bankruptcy. Years of pent-up resentment over Boeing’s mismanagement, combined with pandemic-era inflation and a resurgent labor movement, made this strike inevitable. Ahead of the strike, Ortberg urged workers not to strike while acknowledging their anger over nearly two decades of past contracts that downsized their retirement and health care benefits. Boeing workers are voting on a new labor contract on Thursday, setting up the potential for a crippling strike if staff members decide to reject the deal just as the plane maker is trying to ramp up its production. "I know the reaction to our tentative agreement with the IAM has been passionate," he wrote in his staff note. The union, which represents about 33,000 Boeing factory workers in the Seattle area and in Oregon had sought some 40% pay raises from Boeing. But the 25% increase would be in line with the United Auto Workers' deal last year that followed strikes at Ford , General Motors and Chrysler parent Stellantis. "The market share of your brands has been slashed nearly in half, Stellantis stock price is tumbling, plants are closing, layoffs are rampant, and key executives fleeing the company. We will continue to work with our dealers to avoid any public disputes that will delay our ability to deliver results." Stellantis reported a record profit in 2023, but so far this year, the automaker reported a first-half net profit of 5.6 billion euros ($6.07 billion), down 48% from the same period of 2023. It's part of his "Dare Forward 2030" plan to increase profits and double revenue to 300 billion euros ($325 billion) by 2030.

Trump called Musk “the cutter,” and praised Musk for his anti-union stances. “Both Trump and Musk want working class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. But it’s not clear that Trump was referencing any specific workers Musk fired for organizing against his company. What comes next could hinge on who gets to oversee labor relations after the election. The National Labor Relations Board — which polices unfair labor practices and mediates worker-management disputes — has become an aggressive union booster under Biden. While the agency’s policies typically shift depending on who’s in the White House, the change has been pronounced, labor experts and former NLRB staffers say. Before joining the law firm in 2022, White worked for a decade at a regional NLRB field office under the Obama, Trump and Biden administrations. Last year, the NLRB overturned a 50-year precedent, requiring employers to recognize a union if most workers sign authorization cards for one.

DETROIT — Automaker Stellantis plans to indefinitely lay off up to 2,450 U.S. factory workers later this year as it discontinues production of an older version of its Ram 1500 pickup truck in Michigan. It is produced alongside the Jeep Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer at the Warren Truck Assembly Plant, located near Detroit. The current Ram 1500, which was recently updated for the 2025 model year, is produced at a nearby plant. “With the introduction of the new Ram 1500, production of the Ram 1500 Classic at the Warren [Michigan] Truck Assembly Plant will come to an end later this year,” the company said in an emailed statement. The discontinuation of the Ram 1500 “Classic” vehicle is not unexpected, but the company has not announced a vehicle to replace the truck.

As production of the Ram 1500 Classic winds down later this year, the company is shifting focus to the Ram 1500 Tradesman truck, produced at its Sterling Heights Assembly facility. “We introduced the new 2025 Ram 1500 Tradesman with incredible value and content. A ‘harsh reality’ for EVsFord likes to brag about its growing EV sales, but its profit is still primarily coming from the sales of gasoline powered trucks and SUVs.
