In fact, the period just before and just after a stock reports is a perfect time to review the relevant patterns and levels. We're going to do just that today for Netflix (NFLX) , Meta (META) and Alphabet (GOOGL) , the biggest components of the S & P 500's communication services sector. Alphabet bullish pattern Alphabet reports earnings next week on Tuesday. Meta's key area Lastly, but certainly not least, Meta reports next Wednesday. That bullish consensus makes this former CBOT pit trader take pause, and I believe now is the time to hedge some semiconductor exposure. I want to use put options in the VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) to mitigate downside risk. That came in the wake of better-than-expected results from contract chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor , which counts NVDA as one of its biggest customers. Lastly, I want to consider the technicals setup, as when emotion gets injected into the marketplace, technical typically take over. BEFORE MAKING ANY FINANCIAL DECISIONS, YOU SHOULD STRONGLY CONSIDER SEEKING ADVICE FROM YOUR OWN FINANCIAL OR INVESTMENT ADVISOR.

With the Federal Reserve rate-cutting cycle expected to begin and the November election just around the corner, now could be a good time to invest in municipal bonds. Interest earned on municipal bonds are free from federal tax. Close said he is already seeing financial advisors start to position their muni portfolios in anticipation of changes. Unlike the Treasury market, the muni market yield curve is upward sloping, Close said. In addition, there's room for lower-rated municipalities to outperform, such as A, BBB and high yield, Norton said.

Like Thursday's look at buy levels for our four 1-rated megacaps — Amazon , Meta Platforms , Microsoft , and Nvidia — we like the business prospects of those industrial names and think their stocks will move higher over time. Here's a look at key technicals in their stock charts that signal attractive buy levels. By now, members likely know that the two levels we are always going to watch are the 50-day moving average and the 200-day. That puts a first buy level at just over $80 apiece , right at the 50-day moving average and around current levels. That said, a move below $170 would represent a breakdown below the 200-day moving average.

To start let's examine the 200-day moving average on the daily chart below shown as a dashed blue line. Looking back to the most recent correction in April, that was the support level of the price-to-moving average spread: 34%. We could be approaching a support level based on this analysis. This could occur by price continuing to move lower along with the moving average trending higher as the recent higher price readings factor into the average. The 50-day moving average of the daily volume totals is clearly in a decline since April.

UBS sees the recent tech stock sell-off as a buy-the-dip opportunity for long-term investors. UBS cites attractive valuations, solid fundamentals, and fading technical factors as reason to stick with large-cap tech. But according to UBS, the recent decline in tech stocks is only temporary, and that should be apparent when mega-cap tech stocks report their second-quarter earnings results later this week. A healthy sell-off in tech stocks has led to more attractive valuations for the fast-growing sector, especially when compared to previous bubbles. "While the tech sector appears to be expensive after the rally this year, price-to-earnings multiples remain much lower than in the dot-com era, when many tech stocks had much lower-quality earnings," UBS said.

XOM is within 7% of its 52-week high of $123.75 from April 12, which also is its all-time high. However, that same volatile trading range since April has become part of a much larger potential bullish pattern — which is best seen on this weekly chart. The area shaded in yellow is the same bullish pattern highlighted above. In other words, a breakout to new highs now finally would help extend the 14-year bullish pattern breakout (2008-2022). The best-case scenario, then, would be seeing XOM breakout on both an absolute and relative basis.

Shares of small- and midsize companies, or "SMID caps" for short, have lagged behind their large-cap peers in recent years, including 2024. Large caps may lead for a while longer, Oppenheimer researchers wrote in a July 9 note. AdvertisementOppenheimerHowever, SMID caps have quietly but consistently built momentum throughout this year, even though they haven't broken out yet. "Each of these unconfirmed averages are maintaining above prior breakout levels and their 200-day average," Oppenheimer researchers wrote. Within SMID caps, Oppenheimer is especially bullish on midsize growth stocks.

Bank of America said this week that a slate of stocks is poised for upside as the summer heats up. CNBC Pro combed through Bank of America's research to find buy-rated stocks that are too attractive to ignore. Carnival Carnival is coming off better-than-expected earnings in late June. Investors deliberating whether the stock rally can continue in the second half of 2024 should keep an eye on the 200-day moving average, according to Stephen Suttmeier, technical research strategist at Bank of America Securities. The indicator, which is used by chart analysts to determine long-term trends, has been positive during the first six months of the year — as the S & P 500 surged 15% to record levels. The broad market index did not have a single daily close below its 200-day moving average in the first half. However, if the S & P 500 falls below its 200-day moving average in the second half of 2024, that will mean weaker returns, the technician said. "[This] scenario shows average and median returns of 0.60% (SPX 5490) and 2.43% (SPX 5590), respectively," the technician said.

Although Micron (MU) has not had Nvidia's meteoric performance, it has been a stellar stock, doubling in the last year and up over 50% in 2024. The AI boom has buoyed memory chips higher as these chips have become a more important component for artificial intelligence accelerators. However, the possibly unrealistic bar now being set for AI earnings reports saw Micron drop more than 7% on high volume. I want to express a short-term bearish view in Micron as I believe further profit-taking will occur in the third quarter. Micron is one of the largest semiconductor companies in the world, specializing in high-bandwidth memory and storage chips.

Here's an update on the chart in a breakout shoemaker that is giving Nike a run for its money. In May, I wrote about On Holding AG (ONON) ahead of its earnings with a buy recommendation. You'll notice that the stock popped on the week of May 14th following the earnings report above the 2023 highs of $36.90. Looking at the valuation, NKE is trading about 26 times 2024 expected earnings and 25 times 2025 expected earnings. DECK is ranging from 10% to 20% revenue growth from the same period last year and ONON is running from 20% to 33% revenue growth.

Meta (META) is about 5% from all-time highs and technically set up for a move to break to a new record. Since then during its 'year of efficiency' free cash flow has been built back to about $11-$13 billion per quarter for a yearly cash flow of about $50 billion. Meta is already making significant progress as its AI-generated content recommendation systems on Instagram Reels has made sharing among users increasingly popular.
