Digital health company Noom on Thursday announced it will offer a compounded GLP-1 drug as part of a new weight loss product that starts at $149. Noom has offered weight loss programs for years, and consumers can already try to access those branded medications through its platform. Compounded GLP-1 medications are typically much cheaper than their branded counterparts. Most insurance plans cover GLP-1s when they are used to treat diabetes, but coverage of the weight loss drugs is less widespread. Consumers can get started with the Noom GLP-1 RX program by filling out an intake form on the website.

Washington CNN —Mortgage rates fell this week to the lowest point since February 2023, in a welcome sign for Americans grappling with a tough housing market. The standard, 30-year fixed-rate mortgage averaged 6.20% in the week ended September 12, mortgage financing giant Freddie Mac said Thursday. Mortgage rates started to drop early last month on news affirming lower interest rates in the future, specifically after a weaker-than-expected jobs report for July, and have gradually edged lower since. “Mortgage rates have fallen more than half a percent over the last six weeks and are at their lowest level since February 2023,” Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist, said in a release. The Fed doesn’t directly set mortgage rates, but its action do influence them through movements in bond yields.

Donald J. Trump’s political endurance this year has been attributed in part to voters’ faded memories about why they denied him a second term four years ago. The former president is doing his best to remind them. Despite a carefully scripted week of campaign events aimed at counterprogramming the Democratic National Convention, Mr. Trump undercut much of his messaging with a series of off-the-cuff remarks, rants and blunders that threatened to stoke the kind of Republican anxiety he has spent much of the past month trying to tamp down. On Monday in Pennsylvania, he struggled to clarify a previous comment that he believed the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which honors civilians, was “much better” than the Medal of Honor given to military members. On Tuesday in Michigan, he claimed that Vice President Kamala Harris had won the Democratic nomination after a “vicious, violent overthrow of a president" and called Chicago, which hosted the Democratic convention, “a war zone that’s worse than Afghanistan.”

Harris called for ending taxes on tips while rolling out a series of populist economic proposals last week, echoing a policy Trump already supported. The vice president pointed to Trump’s opposition to a bipartisan border security and immigration bill, which turned Republicans against the measure. Vice President Kamala Harris gestures as she steps from Air Force Two upon arriving at Joint Base Andrews, Maryland, on August 23, 2024. Many experts say short-term rentals, including Airbnbs, are part of the problem, restricting local housing supply and driving up prices. We took a look at three European hubs — Lisbon, Florence, and Amsterdam — that have imposed relatively strict regulations on short-term rentals. Cities have been worried about the impact of short-term rentals on housing costs for years. Instead of a blanket ban, Amsterdam caps the number of nights hosts can rent out their homes at 30 a year. In an increasingly tight housing market, the dominance of short-term rentals acts as an "amplifier," he said.

Top NewsA rocket attack targeting U.S. personnel housed at a base in Iraq’s western desert injured several American troops late on Monday, according to U.S. defense officials. Initial reports were that at least five people were injured in Monday’s attack and that the wounded included both U.S. troops and contractors. Those Iraqi militants have typically attacked U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria and targeted Israel using longer-range rockets. The chief goal of Iran-backed groups in Iraq is to force the U.S. troops to leave the country entirely. There are about 2,500 American troops in Iraq, as well as 900 in Syria, where the Islamic State has once again become active.

Work hours are more flexibleMany workplaces are flexible and allow employees to choose a schedule that fits their lifestyle. Some people, depending on the industry and their tenure at their job, can have up to 38 paid vacation days a year. For example, both parents are offered paid leave and they can decide when to use them in different amounts. If your kid is sick and you need to leave work to care for them, that is not just accepted but encouraged. In many cases, this can be considered a sick day for the parent as well and can be paid leave.

If you ask Zaslav, though, the reason Roberts and other potential buyers of media assets aren't interested is because the government has scared them away. Or, perhaps, legacy media companies are simply undesirable assets to own. He extended the life of his previous company, Discovery Communications — and probably his own tenure running a media company — by merging it with AT&T's WarnerMedia in 2022. Without a deal, Discovery would have wallowed as a subscale content provider and owner of declining cable networks. It’s a high-risk, high-reward gamble for Democrats, resetting a campaign Biden was losing with a new nominee just 107 days before the election. Dunn and her husband, Bob Bauer, were among Biden’s debate prep team and had faced the ire of the president’s family in the aftermath of the debate. Several news outlets, including CNN, reported that Pelosi and former President Barack Obama had privately expressed concerns about the future of Biden’s campaign. European Central Bank policymakers held interest rates steady on Thursday, as they reiterated their cautious approach to cutting rates as inflation bumps around above the bank’s target. Last month, policymakers cut the interest rate a quarter point, the first reduction in nearly five years and a tentative step toward easing. Inflation in the eurozone has fallen a long way from its double-digit highs in late 2022, and policymakers are trying to ensure it returns to their 2 percent target sustainably. Average inflation across the 20 countries that use the euro was 2.5 percent in June, slightly lower than it was in May but higher than in April. “Inflation is expected to fluctuate around current levels for the rest of the year,” Christine Lagarde, the president of the European Central Bank, said at a news conference in Frankfurt.

The attempted assassination of Donald Trump has reverberated around the world. America’s economy and innovation may be the envy of the world, but our politics and polarized culture are not. Business leaders and donors are not doing enough to tamp it down; most won’t speak out, afraid of potential blowback, giving outsize influence to a handful of voices on social media.
