Israeli air strikes overnight and into Sunday have killed scores in Gaza, according to local health officials, as police in Israel arrested three suspects after flares were fired at Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's home in the city of Caesarea. Basal said 60 people were killed after the IDF bombed houses in the city Sunday morning, and that "dozens are under the rubble." Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the incident crossed “all red lines” in a post on X early on Sunday. According to Lebanon’s health ministry, Israeli attacks have killed at least 3,400 people in the country. Hezbollah attacks have killed about 100 civilians and soldiers in northern Israel, the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and southern Lebanon over the last year, according to Israel.

UNRWA provides far more than humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip. Many Palestinians see darker motives, viewing the UNRWA ban as Israel's latest attempt to make their lives unlivable, first imprisoning and bombing them, now taking away their main aid lifeline. Palestinians wait to receive medicines at the UNRWA health center in Khan Younis last month. Despite its endorsements, the United States is yet to resume funding to UNRWA after Israel's Oct. 7 allegations. The Israeli Foreign Ministry has said it will use other agencies, such as the World Food Programme and the World Health Organization, to distribute aid.

"The Black Swan" author Nassim Taleb says he's focused on hedging against a market collapse. He said the market is flashing parallels to prior crashes, noting that it is the most fragile in 20 years. He pointed to risks like high debt levels and "crazy" stock prices in an interview with Bloomberg. Nassim Taleb, author of "The Black Swan," the famed treatise on the risks related to improbable events, aired concerns over the state of the market in a recent interview with Bloomberg. Universa Investments is technically "market blind," Taleb said, as the firm employs an investment strategy that disregards short-term market forecasts.

He criticizes the US for high debt and low growth, leading a fragile financial system. He highlighted the four categories of debt-based countries: those with low growth and high or low debt, and those with high growth and high or low debt. The US is in the category of low growth and high debt. However, if a country accumulates high debt, then continued growth is required to absorb it, he noted. At present, Taleb doesn't believe that the ballooning debt could be solved politically or by increased demand for US bonds.

Image Smoke billowing after an Israeli airstrike on Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip on Sunday. In a statement on Sunday, the group said it objected to “more rounds of negotiations” and the introduction of any new proposals or conditions. Officials in Gaza said over the weekend that dozens of people had been killed in Israel’s strike on the school compound. The authorities in Gaza do not distinguish between combatants and civilians in reporting death tolls. Israel’s political and military leaders have argued that it is essential to keep up the military pressure on Hamas, to force it to come to terms on a cease-fire deal.

Hamas and Iranian state media said Wednesday that the 62-year-old had been killed in the Iranian capital Tehran. Hamas claimed Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli “strike” on his residence, while the Israeli military declined to comment when contacted by CNN. Haniyeh’s death strikes a significant blow to Hamas at a time when tensions are flaring across the Middle East over the devastating war in Gaza, and raises fraught questions about the future of negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Haniyeh was born in a refugee camp near Gaza City, and joined Hamas in the late 1980s during the First Intifada, or uprising. Black swans and grey Swans refer to events that profoundly impact markets and economies due to their unpredictability and importantly potential for substantial disruption. Generally, black swans are rare and lie outside regular expectations, but they have a significant impact when they occur. Their rarity is what makes them unique and their impact, when they do occur, is significant. The 2008 "Great Financial Crisis", sometimes abbreviated as "The GFC", the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and the COVID-19 pandemic have been described by some as "black swans". Still, there are ways to maintain some upside exposure without taking all the downside risk other than hedging.

Bashar Taleb/Agence France-Presse — Getty ImagesIn an interview, Mr. Spagat cited other reasons to be cautious when discussing excess deaths in Gaza. Around 9,000 deaths have been directly attributed to the war since then by Gaza’s health ministry. The subject of excess deaths is sensitive because it touches on the collateral cost of Israel’s war against Hamas.

CNN —Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Monday the country’s military is nearing the “end of the stage of eliminating” Hamas’ army in Gaza. We are advancing to the end of the stage of eliminating the Hamas terrorist army; we will continue striking its remnants,” Netanyahu said, speaking to a group of mainly Israeli and international military officials studying at the National Security College. Netanyahu said last month that the “intense phase of the war with Hamas (in Gaza) is about to end,” and that the military’s focus could then shift to Israel’s northern border with Lebanon. “It doesn’t mean that the war is going to end, but the war in its current stage is going to end in Rafah. The leader of Hezbollah has vowed a fight with "no rules and with no red lines" if full-out war erupts between the Lebanese militant group and Israel, warning Cyprus against getting mired in the conflict. Lebanon and Israel have regularly traded cross-border fire since the start of the Jewish state's war against Palestinian militant group Hamas — which, like Hezbollah, is backed by Iran — in the Gaza Strip. The Hezbollah leader also threatened war against the Mediterranean island of Cyprus, if the European Union member permits Israel to launch military operations from its territory. Nasrallah accused Israel of "conducting maneuvers in preparation for the Lebanon war" in Cyprus, without disclosing his sources. In response to Nasrallah, Cyprus' President Nikos Christodoulides on Wednesday stressed that his country is not involved in the conflict and is, in fact, part of the solution, according to the Cyprus News Agency.

The Israeli military did not immediately comment on the strike. On Tuesday, the Israeli military said that Hezbollah had fired about 50 rockets into Israel from southern Lebanon. People should pay attention to the events in the Middle East from a humanitarian perspective but disregard them as investors, according to author Nassim Taleb. "I would say to investors to basically ignore what's going on in the Middle East and as an individual to worry," the "Black Swan" author told CNBC's Kelly Evans during an interview Monday on "The Exchange." "The connection between the markets and these events is completely unpredictable, even more unpredictable than the events themselves." In addition to his market work, Taleb is a Lebanese American essayist whose seminal work, "The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable," warns against trying to predict the unpredictable. He largely has advocated an approach to investing that hedges against unusual events such as the financial crisis of 2008-09.

Investors should be wary of coming Fed rate cuts, Black Swan investor Mark Spitznagel warned. That's because the Fed is only cutting rates in response to a weakening economy, Spitznagel told Reuters last week. The US could see a recession and major stock crash before rates head lower, he predicted. That's because the Fed is only likely to ease monetary policy when the economy is slammed with a recession and the market is flailing, according to famous "Black Swan" investor Mark Spitznagel.
