Less than two months into his tenure as CEO, Ortberg has largely understood the assignment. See here: We’re nearly two weeks into a strike by Boeing’s largest labor union. Initially, Ortberg seemed to have buy-in from labor leaders, who publicly acknowledged that the new boss was walking into a conflict that predated him by 16 years. All of that gave the new boss, who spent his first day at work touring a factory floor, a kind of pro-labor halo. “This tactic is a blatant show of disrespect” to union members and the bargaining process, the International Association of Machinists wrote Monday.

Family offices, the private investment arms of single families, are also shifting to profit shares as a way to better align the incentives of the staff with the family. "Family offices are competing for talent against each other, and against traditional private equity, hedge funds and venture capital." Family offices are increasingly offering lucrative shares of equity and deal profits to staff amid a growing battle for talent, according to a top family office attorney. They often pair co-investments with profit shares to create both upside and potential downside to staff. Because they serve a single family, family offices have more flexibility than many companies when it comes to designing pay plans.

New York CNN —The stage is now officially set for a high-stakes showdown between the NBA and TNT parent company Warner Bros. WBD, the parent company of CNN, paid for matching rights when it struck its current deal with the NBA. In doing so, the NBA argued that WBD’s offer was not a legally valid match since it would also be broadcasting the games on TNT. And it should be noted that the contractual paperwork giving WBD matching rights is pages long and not simple. Zaslav and his deputies believe that they have a robust legal argument and that they are indeed entitled to use their contractual rights to match Amazon’s bid.

A large oil industry deal advanced on Tuesday after shareholders of Hess approved a proposed sale of the company to Chevron for $53 billion. Control over one of the most prized oil assets, off the shores of Guyana, is at stake in the deal, which still faces significant hurdles. Exxon is contesting Chevron’s acquisition of Hess by arguing that Hess can’t sell itself without allowing Exxon to buy its stake in the Guyana project. Chevron and Hess have said Exxon’s interpretation of the terms of Exxon and Hess’s partnership is incorrect. But Hess prevailed at its shareholders’ meeting on Tuesday in convincing a majority that the deal was in their best interest.

New York CNN —Wendy’s is sweetening its breakfast lineup with a new treat that comes from an unusual place: Another fast food chain. Also, most Cinnabon locations haven’t yet opened for the day when Wendy’s sells breakfast, which ends at 10:30 am. Perhaps Wendy’s adding cinnamon pull-aparts might entice some dissatisfied customers of McDonald’s, which last year scrapped its McCafé bakery lineup that also included a cinnamon roll. The “Cinnabon Pull-Aparts” are made from sweetened dough that’s dunked in a glaze then baked with cinnamon, brown butter and sugar. The chain previously predicted that breakfast would make 10% of its sales, with figures reaching 8.5% in 2021 before Wendy’s stopped reporting individual sales for the morning menu.

The Orioles have been mediocre — or straight-up awful — throughout most of Angelos’ ownership. The new owner, Rubenstein, is a Baltimore native and co-founder of The Carlyle Group, a Washington, DC-based private equity giant. If the sale is approved, Rubenstein will become the controlling partner in the ownership group, the key decision-maker. After the 94-year-old Angelos dies, the Rubenstein group will own all 100% of the club. The Orioles’ $1.7 billion valuation is nearly triple what the team was worth in 2014, according to Forbes.

Walmart said it hasn't made any changes to store managers' pay structure in more than a decade. U.S. managers of the sprawling supercenters, which run about 180,000 square feet, will receive $20,000 in stock grants. Walmart said the stock grants will vest over a three-year period, with ownership for one-twelfth of the grant total coming every quarter. The new starting annual base salary for U.S. store managers will range from $90,000 to $170,000. That means that the average base pay for store leaders will go to $128,000 from $117,000, according to Cedric Clark, executive vice president of store operations at Walmart’s U.S. division.

A 27-year-old who briefly served as Kris Jenner's personal assistant has gone viral sharing her experiences. Madeline Steitz has since turned her focus to launching her own natural sweetener brand. AdvertisementA 27-year-old vegan baker and entrepreneur went viral last year on TikTok discussing her brief stint as Kris Jenner's personal assistant, saying the job helped her launch her own eponymous sweetener brand. "Kris doesn't do anything that's not strategic when it comes to operating business, and she's an absolute genius." Uber said it needed several hundred drivers to sign up in order to launch the service. But many London cabdrivers had a scathing response. “We don’t need a partnership with Uber,” said the Licensed Taxi Drivers Association, a union that represents a majority of the city’s nearly 18,000 cabdrivers, in the headline of a release on Wednesday. There was “no demand” for such a partnership from taxi drivers, the union’s general secretary, Steve McNamara, said in a statement, adding that their members were unlikely to even consider joining the platform. “If they were offering double the meter and no commission, I still wouldn’t sign up with them.”

As the median payment on a new mortgage creeps toward $2,200, most buyers are desperate to save cash wherever they can. They’re offering lower mortgage ratesIf slashed prices aren’t enough to get a mortgage payment in your budget, builders have another offer: A lower mortgage rate. (Essentially, the builder prepays the lender the interest for the years the mortgage rate is reduced). NAHB’s data shows that 29% of builders offered mortgage rate buydowns in October. “Many builders are using sales incentives—including mortgage rate buydowns—as a method of addressing housing affordability headwinds,” says Robert Dietz, chief economist at NAHB.

REUTERS/Roman Churikov/ File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsTBILISI, Nov 17 (Reuters) - Georgia's grape harvest may be over, but vineyard owner and hotelier George Piradashvili's work for the year is far from finished. At his winery in the eastern region of Khakheti, Piradashvili is boiling leftover grape juice from this year's harvest - on strings, together with flour and walnuts, to produce a signature delicacy: churchkhela. Throughout Georgia, the sticks of hard-boiled grape juice studded with walnuts hang from market stalls and shops. Chewy churchkhela sticks go some way to sweetening an otherwise heavy and often spicy diet. The grape juice must be stirred to prevent it setting too soon as it boils and thickens in great vats for hours on end - a highly physical task.

That’s because many big banks have been playing a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ game with customers. Many large bricks-and-mortar banks pay even less—Wells Fargo, for example, pays 0.15% on its standard savings account while JP Morgan Chase pays 0.01%. Evergreen Bank—a locally-owned bank serving the Chicago suburbs—is currently offering a 5.25% APY on savings accounts, one of the best savings account rates for October. Compare that to what big banks offer and you can see the appeal of looking for alternatives to the big banks. But it has been investing heavily in its domestic arms industry with the goal of equipping its own forces and increasing its arms sales around the world. Recent arms sales and exercises illustrate how India seeks to turn that domestic arms production into foreign sales and perhaps even take some of that market away from its biggest supplier. The leaders discussed "defense platforms" and "equipment-related linkages" and deepening cooperation between their militaries and defense industries. (Egypt and India collaborated on development of the Helwan HA-300 light supersonic interceptor in the 1960s, but that project was ultimately canceled.) After all, Indian defense exports in recent years were negligible compared to heavyweights like the US and France, and New Delhi remains heavily reliant on imports.

Banks now must sacrifice profit to keep customers who are struggling to make repayments on time. Cash profit for the year ended June 30 rose 6% to A$10.16 billion, slightly ahead of analyst forecasts, but CBA put aside $A1.47 billion more in provisions due to "ongoing cost of living pressures and rising interest rates". CBA stopped offering cash payments for mortgage refinancings to lure new borrowers in June, which CEO Matt Comyn said had "weighed on our market share". CBA's mortgage book grew in line with the total market in 2023. The number of borrowers struggling to repay loans, while rising, remained below pre-pandemic levels "but these figures will rise", Comyn said.

The high yield on this 1-year CD just got even hotter

Bread raised the annual percentage yield on its 1-year certificate of deposit to 5.35%, an increase of 10 basis points. That bump higher makes it the 1-year CD with the highest yield among banks under Stephens' coverage, according to a Monday report from the firm. Consider that a 2-year CD at Bread has an APY of 5%, while a 5-year CD yields 4.25%. "The past two weeks have been relatively quiet for online bank rate moves, and we wonder if this is holiday-related or if the online bank demand for deposits has slowed," said Vincent Caintic, an analyst at Stephens. He added that another driver behind the deceleration in deposit rate increases could be a slowdown of loan growth among online banks.
