Paris CNN —Belgium has withdrawn from the mixed relay triathlon race on Monday and Switzerland has had to mix up its roster after athletes from both countries fell ill following the initial triathlon races last week. The statement did not specify Michel’s illness, which was reported days after she swam in the River Seine during the women’s triathlon on Wednesday. “Claire Michel, a member of the relay, is unfortunately ill and must withdraw from the competition.”Michel finished 38th in the women’s triathlon competition on Wednesday. Swiss Olympic Chief Medical Officer Hanspeter Betschart noted that it is unclear if Briffod’s infection is related to the Seine’s water quality. The athletes had largely put their trust in organizers to ensure that the water quality was safe for them.

Belgium’s triathlon mixed relay team has withdrawn from Monday’s event after one of its athletes who swam in the Seine River on Wednesday became ill, the team said Sunday. The athlete, Claire Michel, competed in the women’s triathlon on Wednesday, finishing in 38th place. The team did not say whether Michel was sickened by pollution in the Seine, site of the triathlon’s 1,500-meter swim. “The BOIC and Belgian Triathlon hope that lessons will be learned for future triathlon competitions,” the statement said. “We are thinking of training days that can be guaranteed, competition days and formats that are clear in advance and circumstances that do not cause uncertainty among athletes, entourage and fans.”

In the 1960s, many public pools were filled with concrete or destroyed to avoid allowing Black Americans to swim in them. In fact, park managers opted to shut down the Historic Audubon Park Natatorium in New Orleans, the largest public pool in the South, rather than see it integrated. Black children ages 10-14 years drown in swimming pools at a rate that is almost 8 times higher than White children. Third places are incredibly important for public health and wellbeing however because they give people a place to socialize and build community. We also need better national data about our public pool system that goes beyond project- or funding-specific tracking.

As tourists savored icy granitas under hibiscus trees and swam in the cool Mediterranean Sea, in the farmlands of Southern Sicily, among hillsides so scorched they resembled desert dunes, a farmer watched recently as his cows headed to the slaughterhouse. There have been ongoing concerns that E. coli in the Seine could pose a risk to athlete health.
