Matt Gaetz’s withdrawal Thursday as a candidate for attorney general illustrates the roadblocks President-elect Donald Trump could face as he attempts to convert his campaign of “retribution” into a governing coalition capable of working within the realities of Washington. In Gaetz, Trump would finally get the loyal attorney general he felt like he never had in his first term. But it was a tough sell from the moment Trump announced Gaetz as his choice eight days ago — in a pick that shocked much of Washington. In the end, it was the “combination of the ethics report and opposition among Senate Republicans,” that doomed Gaetz’s candidacy, a senior Senate aide told NBC News. Before Gaetz’s withdrawal Thursday, Trump allies were pushing hard on GOP senators and other ambitious Republicans to publicly support his embattled Cabinet picks.

“We’ve been dealing with severe challenges due to gang violence, which has essentially cut off ground transportation,” Thelemaque said. “Although the FAA says the ban will lift on Dec. 12, most airlines are rescheduling flights for February,” she said. “Families are consumed by the news of worsening violence and are mourning senseless killings.”The flight ban is also disrupting long-standing holiday traditions in this mostly Catholic and Christian country. “Now, that opportunity has been taken away.”Williams noted that the ban extends beyond Port-au-Prince to airports throughout the country, further isolating Haitians. “Some passengers have had to return to Europe or elsewhere.”Police officers coduct searches in a suburb of Port-au-Prince, Haiti on Tuesday.

The pay limit has been in place since the end of a labor dispute that caused the cancellation of the entire 2004-05 NHL season. Sports business experts said the strict salary cap has helped the league's financial health since the full season stoppage. The hard salary cap is a stark difference from Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association, which have no salary cap and a soft salary cap, respectively. But the hard cap means NHL teams have to be especially diligent. The NHL is planning to start negotiations with the NHLPA in early 2025, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said at this year's NHL Board of Governors meeting.

But rather than one of the more obvious outdoor wellness and adventure hubs, it’s actually Taiwan. “Several factors have contributed to the rapid growth of outdoor sports in Taiwan,” says Kate Chen of the Taiwan Tourism Administration. “There was a huge spike in young adults wanting to go hiking or cycling.”But it’s not just locals discovering the island’s outdoor opportunities. Floating in the South China Sea between Taiwan, Hong Kong and the Philippines, Dongsha Marine National Park offers an entirely different take on outdoor adventure. They also provide a venue for more than 100 nature trails that are part of a national trails network created in 2002.

AdvertisementSummer is over, and this Sunday it's time to turn back the clocks, ending daylight-saving time for the year. "That's how fragile and susceptible your body is to even just one hour of lost sleep," sleep expert Matthew Walker, author of "How We Sleep," previously told Business Insider. Some lawmakers want permanent DST — others want standard time year-roundThe political debate over DST is fierce, unscientific, and deeply divided. In the 2018 midterms, voters opted to get rid of the annual clock change, to be in permanent daylight-saving time. Switching to permanent DST requires a green light from Congress, but states do not need federal approval to switch to permanent standard time.

HONOLULU — Snow fell on Hawaii’s tallest peak this week, briefly turning the mountaintop into a winter wonderland. The summit area of Mauna Kea on the Big Island got about 2 inches of white powder. But it’s not unusual for snow to fall at the higher elevations on Mauna Kea during the wetter, winter months. “Combination of cold temperatures and moisture equals snow when it’s below freezing,” Ballard said. Centuries-old stories say Mauna Kea is the first-born son of the sky father and earth mother.

CNN —November is just a few days away, but Japan’s iconic Mount Fuji remains snowless, marking the latest date without a snowcap since records began 130 years ago. The lack of snow as of October 29, beats the previous record of October 26, set in 1955 and 2016, he said. This aerial view shows climbers lining up to take a photo on the Kengamine summit of Mount Fuji on August 10, 2024. The unusual October heat Japan experienced was made three times more likely because of the climate crisis, Climate Central found. Soren Lassen, head of offshore wind research at Wood Mackenzie, said the U.S. offshore wind industry is going through a needed readjustment, and that while the long-term outlook remains intact, progress has been pushed out. South Fork Wind offers tangible evidence that wind projects can work. The company developed the five-turbine Block Island Wind Farm, which is northwest of South Fork Wind, in 2016. The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management first awarded the leases for South Fork Wind in 2013, which where acquired by Deepwater Wind. In September, Skyborn Renewables, a Global Infrastructure Partners portfolio company, acquired Eversource's 50% stake in both South Fork Wind and Revolution Wind.

He’s lived through many storms in his 30 years on Longboat Key, but Bob Parrish said he’s never before seen the level of destruction that Hurricane Helene blew into town a little more than two weeks ago. It also brought a double whammy of destruction from two major hurricanes to a string of islands and their residents who were still rebuilding from Hurricane Ian in 2022. Honestly, I only cried a little bit after Milton because I cried so much after Helene. Even before Helene and Milton brought the one-two punch, Rodocker was still reeling from Hurricane Debby’s path of destruction in August. “It was like a right, a left and an undercut.”Marco Island, seen here on Sept. 26, was badly flooded by Hurricane Helene.
