A Sierra Madre couple has few complaints about the reclusive tenant who moved in a few weeks ago. They’ve captured several photos on a motion-activated camera installed by California Fish and Wildlife agents that show what appears to be the face of an older large black bear. “We would wait for the bear to leave the crawlspace,” said Kevin Howells, of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. About half of the state’s bear population can be found in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and areas to the north and west. Only an estimated 10 percent of the black bear population inhabits central western and southwestern California.

Breaking Dawn was one of two places that opened in the San Francisco Bay Area last spring emphasizing brunch. Asian American restaurants in other cities have also found that sweet and savory spot between breakfast and lunch. Jessica Nguyen, 28, who was finishing brunch at Breaking Dawn, says she’ll almost always choose Asian brunch over regular eggs or waffles. Within the last few decades, Asian and Asian American cuisine has become more popular through media and savvy foodies. She doesn’t see other restaurants with Asian brunch as rivals.

Now part of the permanent collection at the Palm Springs Art Museum, the story of Albert Frey’s “Aluminaire House,” and its significance in the history of architecture is quite remarkable. If you had never seen a modern house — and most Americans had not — it probably looked like a set for a science fiction movie. Even today, it looks “like it’s from another planet,” said Palm Springs Art Museum CEO Adam Lerner. After years of negotiations and fine-tuning the logistics, the Foundation donated Aluminaire House to the Palm Springs Art Museum in 2020, which subsequently raised $2.6 million to cover the cost of its rebuilding and future care. When the pandemic began, Susannah Dalton and José Ignacio Vivero were living in a basement apartment in Sunnyside, Queens. “It wasn’t bad during Covid,” Ms. Dalton said, “because it had a strong bunker feel and that was the vibe back then. They began by completing an application for NYC Housing Connect, the online portal that matches renters with open housing lotteries. “We thought, well, let’s just start putting our hat in the ring,” recalled Ms. Dalton. “We’re lucky because, as artists, we get a lot of grant funding, and the Queens Art Fund has been so supportive,” Ms. Dalton said.

Charlie Chaplin and Helen Keller in 1918 on the set of ‘Sunnyside.’The Helen Keller that America loved was on display at New York’s Palace Theatre in 1920. Keller, whose sight and hearing were destroyed by an infection when she was an infant, had become a media sensation celebrated by presidents and tycoons. Now she was being advertised as “The Most Talked of Woman in the World! Blind, deaf, and formerly dumb, in ‘The Sweetest Love Story Ever Told.’ ”The vaudeville act began with Anne Sullivan, the teacher who met Keller when the latter was 7 years old, telling the audience how she had taught the unhappy, unmanageable child to understand words by spelling them out on her hand. Keller went on to learn Braille in both English and German, graduate from Harvard, write several books, and establish a friendship with Mark Twain.
Shortly after Covid-19 hit, Michelle de Vera and Serhan Ayhan settled into a one-bedroom in Woodside, Queens. Ms. de Vera, who then worked in the airline industry, had an easy trip via public transportation to the Queens airports. She would spend hours on video calls for work while Mr. Ayhan, 36, clanked in the kitchen and tried to stay out of camera range. Email: thehunt@nytimes.com]Their criteria included a kitchen — with a dishwasher — that was suitable for making dough,, and space for hosting pizza nights. In every apartment they visited, Mr. Ayhan checked to see whether the oven was big enough to accommodate his pizza peel.
An incoming GOP congressman from Long Island has several gaps in his resume, according to news reports. Santos has begun to address the falsehoods in interviews with the New York Post and City & State New York. But representatives from the school told the Times they had no record of his enrollment, despite searching multiple variations of his name. Santos has said that he never claimed to be Jewish, just "Jew-ish," despite describing himself as a "proud American Jew" during his campaign. The Republican Jewish Coalition now says he lied to them.
An incoming GOP congressman from Long Island has several gaps in his resume, according to a NYT report. He appears to have lied about his employment history, his college degree, and possibly his residence. He also claimed to have lost four employees in the 2016 Pulse Nightclub shooting. And according to a New York Times investigation, he may have a historically large amount of questions to answer about his resume. But representatives from the school told the Times they had no record of his enrollment, despite searching multiple variations of his name.
Some jazz trends that may come to define this decade are already taking shape, and a major one is happening at the keyboard. Pianists are moving with greater ease and intent between melodic passages and abstract ones, and doing so more routinely than before. But while some younger players (such as David Virelles , Marta Sánchez and Micah Thomas ) have adapted the technique, this isn’t a youth movement. Such veterans as Angelica Sanchez and Sylvie Courvoisier have made it a prominent part of their arsenals, as have midcareer players like John Escreet and Orrin Evans . Angelica Sanchez’s “Sparkle Beings” (Sunnyside, due out Sept. 23) and Mr. Escreet’s “Seismic Shift” (Whirlwind, Oct. 7) both feature stellar sidemen and showcase this style along with other increasingly influential aspects of their work.
