The United States is initiating new peace talks on Wednesday that are aimed at stopping Sudan’s catastrophic civil war, with this push for dialogue driven by growing alarm that the conflict is sending the country deeper into a famine that experts warn could become the world’s worst in decades. But Sudan’s military, one of the war’s two main belligerents, has said it will not attend the negotiations in Switzerland, stymying hopes of a quick cease-fire in a fight between the forces of rival generals that has now lasted 16 months. Famine was officially declared earlier this month in Sudan’s western Darfur region, and other areas are expected to follow. By one estimate as many as 2.5 million Sudanese could die from hunger by the end of September. Appalled at the scale of the war-induced catastrophe in Sudan, a sprawling country in northeastern Africa, American officials said it was urgent to begin the new peace drive, even if chances of a breakthrough seem slim.

CNN —Hey, parents, leave your kids alone. There is the obvious threat of school shootings, which is surely one reason why parents may want their children to have phones on them. Several parents told me that they also strive to stay connected to their kids in emergencies, while minimizing distractions at school. Social media platforms need to do their part in restricting access to their platforms for young kids. And school leadership need to stand up, even in the face of anxious or demanding parents.

Data from the Korean Association of Robot Industry shared with the Financial Times showed there were 5,000 server robots in Korean restaurants. However, tech executives in South Korea told the FT they're now concerned the market is being flooded by cheap Chinese robots, stymying the country's own robotics makers. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak hopes to hold onto power by selling himself as the repairman for a broken Britain. But with inflation still high, debt ballooning and growth sputtering to a halt, economic woes may prove to be Mr. Sunak’s undoing. European Union finance ministers failed to agree Tuesday on providing more than $18 billion of vital economic assistance for Ukraine next year, with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s government stymying for now efforts to secure the loan through common EU debt issuance. The promised assistance of 18 billion euros, equivalent to $18.9 billion, is envisioned as a critical part of the West’s contribution to help Kyiv pay for basic services next year. It comes after the EU came under U.S. and Ukrainian pressure to increase its economic assistance for Ukraine and ensure the consistency of its help.
